From travel and lodging to food and entertainment, RewardExpert breaks down just how much the average American citizen of each state spends when they take domestic and international trips.
New York, N.Y. – RewardExpert – a free service that helps users take full advantage of their credit card and travel rewards – today released a report analyzing the average cost of vacations in all 50 U.S. states. The report dives into the state of American vacationing by analyzing spending figures on various aspects of travel; from transportation and lodging to food and entertainment.
“Using a combination of government and public data sources, we were able to draw insights and comparisons about vacation spending on a national, regional, and state level,” says RewardExpert CEO and co-founder Roman Shteyn. “This report will reveal whether your home state is a big travel spender, and how it stacks up in comparison to neighboring states in the region.”
National-level key findings from RewardExpert’s report include the following:
- On average, four day domestic trips cost Americans $630.00. International trips, as expected, are more expensive, but exactly how much more is pretty staggering. The average international vacation is 561.6% costlier than its domestic counterpart, at $3,538.00.
- Not only do international trips change how much we spend, they also change what we choose to spend our money on. Transportation for domestic trips costs $246.30 on average and, for international trips, that figure skyrockets up to $1,922.30. With such a high fixed travel cost for foreign trips, travelers tend to spend proportionally less on discretionary categories when they are on international trips. Transportation costs, for example, make up 54.3% of international trip expenditures, and only 39.1% on domestic trips.
- Dining is a big part of vacationing. Americans spend an average $168.50 on food and drink while on domestic trips. While abroad they spend about $572.70 to eat out. That figure may be higher for international travel, but it is proportionally far less. When travelers know they have to make such huge investments in transportation and lodging costs, they scale back on dining.
“Americans are notorious workaholics who are prone to not cashing in all their vacation days,” says Shteyn. “With less days away from the office, we see that Americans are more judicious about how they allocate their vacation funds.”
