Best MasterCard Credit Cards of 2017

Jennifer Blocker
Updated on: 11/09/2017

MasterCard is a global payment network that brands a variety of credit cards. These cards come with global acceptance and are issued by various banks. Depending on the bank that issues your credit card, there are many types of rewards, sign-bonuses and travel benefits to be had.

In addition to partnering with banks, there is also an assortment co-branded airline, hotel and even cruise line MasterCard credit cards. Or you can choose a MasterCard with cashback rewards. Some cards come with a 0% introductory interest rate and others are no-fee cards, to name a few options.

But no matter what type of card you get, be sure to know all of the perks, benefits and rewards you are entitled to as a cardholder. Whether you use your MasterCard to shop or travel, there are a host of benefits you will receive at no additional cost that can save you both money and time.

6 Top Rated MasterCard Credit Cards

There are three levels of MasterCard credit cards: the standard MasterCard, World MasterCard and World Elite MasterCard. Many of them earn rewards and have various benefits offered by the bank or issuer. In addition, MasterCard itself presents cardholders with separate benefits and services.

Cards branded with the World MasterCard logo have more travel benefits than the standard MasterCard, and the World Elite MasterCard lineup allows you to travel like a VIP with an extensive list of luxury travel benefits. These cards not only offer a broad range of perks, but they also give cardholders access to upgrades, savings and discounts in a number of travel-related programs, including airlines, hotels, rental cars and cruises. Though World Elite MasterCard credit cards are at the top, don’t underestimate the benefits of holding any MasterCard.

Our Expert's Conclusion

The short answer is absolutely. Depending on your travel and spending habits, this card may or not make sense for you after the first year when you start paying the annual fee, but earning 40,000 miles after meeting the minimum spend and earning 2X miles on all purchases are tremendous benefits. Not only that, but if this becomes your go-to card, miles will rack up fast, and with the 5 percent redemption bonus, that’s like earning 2.1 percent back on every purchase, every day. This card is just as good as any other cashback card currently on the market.

  • 40,000 bonus miles after spending $3,000 on purchase in the first 90 days.

  • Get 5% miles back to use toward your next redemption, every time you redeem.

  • No Annual Fee: No matter how you use your card, you won’t pay an annual fee. You don’t have to worry about paying a hefty annual fee and all the rewards are all yours.

Our Expert's Conclusion

Capital One’s Quicksilver card is a great card for earning cash back. If you want to simplify your wallet and you value cash more than miles and points, this is the card for you. Since you can earn 1.5 percent back on every single purchase you make and never pay an annual fee, you can earn some serious cash on everyday purchases, big ticket items, all types of travel or whatever else you choose.

Again, since this card has no annual fee, there’s little downside to the Quicksilver credit card. Yet, it still comes with the elevated MasterCard World Elite protections. As far as travel cards go, this is not a premium card that helps earn status, free checked bags or lounge access, but if you’re an occasional traveler or prefer to fly economy, this card is still a good bet. The cashback you earn can be used toward travel or any other purchase you make. Flexibility makes this a great card.

  • Earn a one-time bonus of $100 once you spend $500 on purchases within the first 3 months.
  • Earn unlimited 1.5% cash back on every purchase.
  • Rewards don't expire, and you can redeem your cash back for any amount, anytime.
  • No foreign transaction fees.
  • Fraud coverage.
  • Security Alerts.
  • Extended warranty.
  • Complimentary concierge service.
  • Identity Theft resolution services.

  • In-flight Discounts: Receive a 50% discount on in-flight purchases of food and beverages on JetBlue flights.

Our Expert's Conclusion

The JetBlue card is a great card for casual JetBlue travelers. The lack of an annual fee makes the card free to hold. For anyone that spends a lot of money at grocery stores or at restaurants, the bonus categories on this card allow you to rack up a significant amount of points quickly. If you only fly JetBlue a few times a year and perhaps would not get enough value out of a card with better benefits that also carries and annual fee, this card may be for you.

  • Simple Redemptions: As long as you redeem your points for travel through the Diamond Resorts International Travel Portal, you’ll receive a full one cent per point in value. It’s not necessary to worry about how to maximize your points.
  • Sign-Up Bonus: While it’s not a large sign-up bonus, you can earn 2,500 points, worth $19 , after making just one purchase on your card.

Our Expert's Conclusion

Overall, the Diamond Resorts International credit card isn’t a great choice for almost anybody. While it does offer some benefits, there are other cards out there that offer more. No matter what you spend your money on, how much you spend or how you like to use your points, there’s probably a better option out there.

If you are a Diamond Resorts customer about to make a big down payment on a timeshare, you might find value in this card’s 0% APR offer. However, that offer is only for six months, and there are other cards available that offer 0% APR on new purchases for a year or more.

That said, since this card has no annual fee, there’s not much harm in getting it. You will earn the $19 sign-up bonus after the first purchase and you don’t need to spend anything in order to make it worth keeping the card long term.

  • Earn 2,500 bonus Diamond Plus Points™ after your first purchase.
  • Earn 2X Diamond Plus Points™ on Diamond Resorts purchases (excluding down payments).
  • Earn 1X Diamond Plus Points™ for every $1 you spend on purchases elsewhere.
  • Earn 500 Diamond Plus Points™ for every $2,000 in spend (excluding down payments).
  • Redeem points for statement credits.
  • Concierge service.
  • $0 Fraud Liability protection.
  • Chip technology.

No Foreign Transaction Fee:

No additional fees will be added to purchases made while you’re traveilng outside the U.S., potentially saving you some serious dough.

Why should you get this card?

  • Big Sign-Up Bonus: This card comes with a huge sign-up bonus of 60,000 points. That’s worth approximately $468 in IHG award stays based on our estimates.
  • Annual Free Night Certificate: Starting in your second year of card membership and every year after, you’ll earn a free night that can be used at any IHG hotel worldwide. That’s incredible!
  • Great Earning Potential: In addition to earning one point per dollar on every purchase, you’ll earn double points at the grocery store, gas station and when going out to eat. Plus, you’ll earn a total of five points per dollar when you pay for your IHG hotel room with this card.
  • Low Annual Fee: Compared to other major travel cards, the IHG card’s annual fee of $49 is very reasonable. And best of all, it’s waived the first year!

Our Expert's Conclusion

This hotel credit card is a good all-around option for almost anybody. While IHG points aren’t the most valuable travel currency out there, the annual free night makes this card worth getting for just about anyone. Even if you don’t stay often in IHG hotels, having a full year to use their annual free night will certainly come in handy as they have hotels and resorts all over the place.

In addition, the Platinum Elite status can come in handy and being able to keep your IHG points active with a single purchase on your IHG credit card each year can go a long way. And when you do decide to redeem some points, you’ll get 10 percent of them back. Getting all of that for just $49 a year is pretty hard to beat, so this should be a card you consider keeping for a long time.

  • 60,000 bonus points after you spend $1,000 on purchases in the first 3 months of account opening.
  • Earn 5 points per $1 spent when you stay at IHG® hotels.

Exclusive Redemptions

Only card members get access to the cheapest award seats.

Preferred Boarding

Get priority boarding just for being a cardholder.

Why should you get this card?

  • Solid Sign-Up Bonus: 15,000 miles might not sound like much, but you can get a lot of value out of that bonus if you know how to use it right. Get up to three free round-trip, short-haul flights.
  • Exclusive Redemptions: Only cardholders can book award flights at the cheapest rates. If you’re a frequent flyer with Spirit, it’s worth getting the card for this perk alone.
  • Miles Never Expire: As long as you make at least one purchase on your card every month, your miles will never expire. This might not sound like much of a perk, but considering that your miles would otherwise expire in just three months, you kind of need this benefit to really take advantage of the Free Spirit program.
  • Great Earning Potential: You’ll get bonus points for every purchase. Every dollar you spend earns 2 miles, which is generous for an airline card.

Our Expert's Conclusion

Do you regularly fly on Spirit Airlines? If the answer is yes, then you should probably get the Spirit Airlines World MasterCard. Not only does it offer a solid sign-up bonus and a generous earning scheme, but it also comes with a couple of benefits that Spirit frequent flyers really can’t do without.

Being a cardholder is the easiest way to keep your Free Spirit miles alive. Without the card, your miles will expire in just 90 days. While that betrays Spirit’s stingy, budget-obsessed business model, I suspect it’s really designed to be an incentive for Free Spirit members to get the credit card. With the card, you just have to make one purchase a month to save your miles.

The second perk that Free Spirit members shouldn’t do without is access to the cheapest redemption levels. Only cardholders can get the best deals on award flights. In essence, you can’t be a full member of Spirit’s frequent flyer program without the credit card.

  • 15,000 bonus miles after your first purchase–enough for up to 3 roundtrip off-peak award tickets with taxes and fees from $11.20 per award.
  • Earn Double Miles on your everyday purchases – that's 2 miles for every $1.
  • Earn up to 5 miles per qualifying $1 spent at select restaurants.
  • 5,000 anniversary bonus Free Spirit™ miles when you spend at least $10,000 in purchases annually.
  • Preferred Boarding.
  • No blackout dates on award tickets.

Benefits of Being a MasterCard Cardholder

Everyone who uses a MasterCard to make purchases will be entitled to some of the many standard benefits of being a cardholder. The perks offered by MasterCard range from shopping benefits to travel protections. There is an abundance of MasterCard credit cards that you can be apply for, and depending on the card, the benefits may vary. However, the following are some benefits offered by MasterCard, World MasterCard and World Elite MasterCard, regardless of which bank issued your credit card.

Shopping Protection Benefits

Some of the more common benefits offered by MasterCard enhance your shopping experience by providing you with additional confidence and comfort while shopping. Some of these benefits include:

  • Extended Warranty:

MasterCard offers extended warranty protection. When you make a purchase with your MasterCard, the warranty offered by the manufacturer or the store will be doubled for up to one year of additional coverage. Your item may be repaired, replaced or even reimbursed in the event that the first two options are unavailable or costlier. This will cover an item for up to $10,000. • Visa and MasterCard are global payment networks, which means that they process the exchange of the money. They do not issue credit cards themselves. The cards are issued by banks. When shopping for a new card, more should be taken into consideration than just MasterCard versus Visa. The major rewards and benefits will be offered by the banks and will vary between cards. You should explore the cards as a whole and not just consider the payment network they are associated with.
Both MasterCard and Visa are accepted worldwide. However, there are some instances within their basic benefits where MasterCard outshines Visa. MasterCard is the only payment network that offers identity theft protection at no extra cost. They can provide alerts, resolution services and emergency wallet replacement.
MasterCard may also be a better choice if you travel often overseas or make a lot of foreign transactions. You can get both MasterCard and Visa cards that have no foreign exchange fees, which can run 3 percent of your purchase price. However, you still have to pay the exchange rate.
Both Visa and MasterCard offer options for you to explore the exchange rates of different countries. Visa offers an exchange rate calculator and MasterCard offers a currency conversion tool. If you explore these, you will usually find that MasterCard has slightly lower exchange rates. These usually vary by only a tenth of a percent or so, but you can probably save a couple of bucks by choosing MasterCard for foreign transactions. These rates can vary on a daily basis, so check in with their tools and explore the exchange rates to make sure you are getting the best deal possible before you start swiping.
  • The rewards you receive are not related to MasterCard, which is the payment network. Rewards will be determined by your card issuer, which would be a bank. There are MasterCard credit cards that offer all types of rewards. The rewards that are best for you are going to depend on where and how you plan on using your card.
When comparing credit cards, you should consider benefits and perks as well as fees. There are many no-fee MasterCard credit cards, however, if you are an avid traveler, or you’re playing the points and miles game, cards with an annual fee can offer increased benefits, rewards and better sign-up bonuses.
Keep in mind that paying interest on a credit card reduces or eliminates the value of the rewards you earn. Therefore, depending on your financial situation, you may want to focus on interest rates instead of rewards. For example, if you are in debt or contemplating a large purchase, you may want to focus on a cashback rewards MasterCard that comes with a 0% APR introductory period.
The Barclaycard CashForward™ World Mastercard®, for example, offers 0% interest for 15 months. This card also earns unlimited 1.5 percent rewards on everything and has a $200 sign-up bonus after spending $1,000 in the first 90 days. These rewards can easily be redeemed for a statement credit at any time. This is a World MasterCard, so it comes with additional benefits from the payment network itself, as well as the benefits and rewards from the issuer.
If you do not need to carry a balance, this gives you the ability to focus more on rewards. You have a variety of rewards to choose from. Do you prefer points or miles? Points can be more straightforward, but miles can be more valuable.
For example, the Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Elite™ MasterCard® has a sign-up bonus of 30,000 miles. If you redeem these miles for MilesSAAver awards on American Airlines, you can get a one-way flight for as little as 7,500 miles. This card also comes with several other money- and time-saving benefits, such as free checked bags and preferred boarding.
When it comes to miles, you can’t always equate them with a specific monetary value. You should also consider the fact that American Airlines works with other airlines within their oneworld global network. This allows you to book flights on 13 other airlines with AAdvantage miles. In addition, it’s a World Elite MasterCard which comes with a host of elite travel benefits.
If you do not travel on American Airlines often, MasterCard has many other credit cards that are branded by airlines, including Allegiant, Frontier, Hawaiian, JetBlue, Spirit and Virgin Atlantic. They also have various other travel partners, like Amtrak, Expedia and IHG, plus several cards branded by cruise lines, including Norwegian and Carnival.
However, if you are non-committal and prefer to have options, a card that allows you to transfer points to a host of partners, including airlines, hotels and car rental companies, may be a better choice. Citi ThankYou, Amex Membership Rewards and Chase Ultimate Rewards are all very flexible rewards programs. Sometimes you can increase the value of your points through this redemption method as they often run promotions with partners where the exchange gives you more points or access to a discount.
Citi offers the Citi ThankYou® Preferred Card and the Citi ThankYou® Premier Card, among others. The Preferred card gives 15,000 points after spending $1,000 in purchases, while the Premier card gives 30,000 points after making $3,000 in purchases. The sign-up bonus isn’t the only difference. The Preferred card gives two points per dollar on dining and entertainment and one point for all other purchases. The Premier card mirrors those rewards but also earns three points per dollar on travel, including gas. The Premier card has a $95 annual fee which is waived for the first year.
There are so many credit cards branded by MasterCard to choose from. Most of the cards mentioned here are for those with good or excellent credit. Therefore, if you need to improve your credit score before applying for one of these cards, try a prepaid or secured MasterCard.
  • The easiest way to apply for a MasterCard is online. However, you can also apply by phone or by mail. You will need to provide your name, address and social security number, as well as some household and income information. The best way to get an instant approval is through an online application.
Be sure to know your credit score and the criteria for the card. Do not apply for a credit card if you do not meet its criteria. However, even those with excellent credit may be turned down for a credit card due to bank specific restrictions, such as the Chase 5/24 rule that states that if you have opened more than five credit cards in a 24-month period, they may turn you down.
In a case that you are denied a certain credit card, always call the reconsideration line. You could still get the card. If you do not end up getting the card, at least find out why you were denied.
  • You can call 1-800-MC-ASSIST to request a claim, or you can submit a claim online. You will need a signed and completed claim form. Proof of loss, such as a police report in the event that he item was stolen, may be required. If the item is damaged, provide a photo which clearly shows the damage.

You’ll also need an itemized receipt and a MasterCard statement showing the original purchase of the item. If you have any additional information pertaining to the incident, it’s a good idea to furnish that as well to expedite and validate your claim.

The claim must be reported within 30 days of the loss and the documentation must be submitted within 60 days of the claim. Items are covered for 90 days from the original date of purchase.
