Best Low Interest Credit Cards of 2017

Jennifer Blocker
Updated on: 11/09/2017

When attempting to get the most value out of your credit card rewards, the first rule is to never carry a balance so you’ll avoid paying interest. Unfortunately, life sometimes makes this impossible and carrying a balance may be necessary. However, just because you need to carry a balance, it does not mean you must pay interest. Low interest credit cards are great for both new purchases and balance transfers. If there is a 0% APR introductory period on purchases, this rate may also apply to balance transfers.

5 Top Low Interest Credit Cards

The best low interest credit cards will allow you to have your cake and eat it, too. You can earn rewards while carrying a balance and avoiding interest. When you need to carry a balance, you obviously want to pay as little interest as possible and no interest is ideal.

Paying interest can easily reduce the value of the rewards you earn. Therefore, it is important to be realistic about debt repayment. Figure out how much you can afford monthly and stick to the plan. Also, don’t overspend or buy unnecessary items just because you have a card that has an interest-free period. Use these cards wisely and they will reward you substantially.

No Foreign Transaction Fees

The Discover miles card does not charge foreign transaction fees so you can rest easy when you are abroad.

Why should you get this card?

  • Great Earning Potential: You always earn 1.5 miles per dollar spent, which equates to 1.5 percent cash back. Don’t settle for 1 percent! The Discover it Miles card is better.
  • Miles Can be Redeemed for Anything: You don’t have to wait until you have travel coming up to use your miles. Even though the Discover it Miles card earns Miles, it is a cash back card.
  • Miles Doubled for the First Year: At the end of your first year as a card member, Discover will match all of the miles you’ve earned!
  • $30 in Annual Wi-Fi Credits: Next time you have a long flight you can purchase Wi-Fi and have Discover cover the cost up to $30 per year.

Our Expert's Conclusion

The Discover it Miles card is wonderful for two types of people. The first, and most obvious, is for someone looking for a single credit card that’s easy to use and that can do it all. The Discover it Miles card is a great option because it earns 1.5 miles per dollar spent on all purchases and redemptions areone cent per mile toward any purchase. Plus thereare a couple of other nice benefits, like $30 in annual Wi-Fi credits and no foreign transaction fees. As a no-fee card, all of that is essentially free.

The second type of person that the Discover it Miles card is a great option for is someone who is looking to truly maximize rewards. The Discover it is basically a no-brainer for the first year because all miles are doubled , meaning that it effectively earns 3 miles per dollar spent (1.5 when you purchase and 1.5 at the end of the year). After the first year it deserves a spot in the wallet of someone who wants to maximize rewards for purchases not included in the bonus earning categories of their other rewards credit cards.

  • Get unlimited 1.5x Miles on every dollar you spend on purchases.
  • No annual fee.
  • We'll match all the Miles you've earned at the end of your first year (new cardmembers only). For example, 30,000 Miles turns to 60,000 Miles.

Conciarge Service:

Get personal assistance via telephone, including recommendations and reservations for dining, hotels, travel, entertainment and more

Foreign Transaction Fee:

You’ll pay a 3 percent for each transaction made abroad.

Why should you get this card?

  • No Annual Fee: You’ll never have to pay anything for this card. That means all the rewards you earn are essentially free.
  • Simple Redemptions: As long as you redeem your points for travel through the Diamond Resorts International Travel Portal, you’ll receive a full one cent per point in value. It’s not necessary to worry about how to maximize your points.
  • Sign-Up Bonus: While it’s not a large sign-up bonus, you can earn 2,500 points, worth $19 , after making just one purchase on your card.

Our Expert's Conclusion

Overall, the Diamond Resorts International credit card isn’t a great choice for almost anybody. While it does offer some benefits, there are other cards out there that offer more. No matter what you spend your money on, how much you spend or how you like to use your points, there’s probably a better option out there.

If you are a Diamond Resorts customer about to make a big down payment on a timeshare, you might find value in this card’s 0% APR offer. However, that offer is only for six months, and there are other cards available that offer 0% APR on new purchases for a year or more.

That said, since this card has no annual fee, there’s not much harm in getting it. You will earn the $19 sign-up bonus after the first purchase and you don’t need to spend anything in order to make it worth keeping the card long term.

  • Earn 2,500 bonus Diamond Plus Points™ after your first purchase.
  • Earn 2X Diamond Plus Points™ on Diamond Resorts purchases (excluding down payments).
  • Earn 1X Diamond Plus Points™ for every $1 you spend on purchases elsewhere.

  • Redeem points for statement credits.

Why should you get this card?

  • Great Earning Potential: You’ll get bonus points on all purchases in the dining and entertainment categories. Before you know it, you’ll have a stash of points after a few nights out on the town.
  • No Annual Fees: Earning rewards is fast, easy and costs nothing. They say that nothing in this world is free, except cheese in a mouse trap… and, apparently, ThankYou points.
  • Sign-Up Bonus: For a card with zero annual fees, a sign-up bonus worth $0 is rather generous, and it only requires spending $1,000 in the first three months to earn the points.
  • 0% APR on Balance Transfers and Purchases for 12 months: Although I do not recommend opening a new credit card while carrying debt, it’s nice to have the option to consolidate balances and pay them off within a year with no interest.

Our Expert's Conclusion

If you’re looking for a credit card that has a decent welcome bonus and earns bonus points in multiple categories, then the Citi ThankYou Preferred card is a good option. It’s also a great card for someone who wants to start earning rewards but is intimidated by annual fees.

Applying for this card costs nothing and you won’t pay a dime to keep it year after year. The 0- point sign-up bonus is worth $0, so there’s absolutely no risk for the cardholder. And earning additional points means more rewards at no cost.

  • 2x ThankYou® Points per dollar spent on purchases for dining at restaurants and entertainment.
  • 1x ThankYou® Point per $1 spent on other purchases.
  • Points do not expire and earn unlimited ThankYou® Points.
  • Redeem ThankYou Points for almost anything, from a large selection of gift cards including dining, entertainment and retail — to an amazing selection of valuable rewards such as electronics, travel rewards, home goods, books and media, charitable donations or even cash.
  • No annual fee.

Auto Rental Collision Damage Waiver:

Why should you get this card?

  • Simple and Unlimited Earning: Every dollar you spend earns 1 Ultimate Rewards points. No need for you to keep track of bonus categories or special promotions. There is also no limit on how much you can earn.
  • Valuable Sign-Up Bonus: This card comes with a sign-up bonus of 15,000 points. That translates into $150 when redeemed for cash.
  • No Annual Fee: A really nice feature of this card is that it has no annual fee, which means you won’t have to spend a certain amount on the card to offset the cost.
  • Easy to Redeem: Get a statement credit with your points or purchase travel through the Ultimate Rewards travel portal. You can also redeem for gift cards.

Our Expert's Conclusion

Since there is no annual fee, Freedom Unlimited is a good card for your everyday spending. There are, however, other cards that earn more points per dollar for specific bonus categories, such as travel, office supplies, dining, gas and groceries. If you spend a lot in these categories, you’re not going to receive the same level of rewards with the Freedom Unlimited card. The real value of having the card in your portfolio is to pair it with the Chase Sapphire Preferred or other premium Chase credit card. Doing so maximizes the redemption power of the points you’ll earn with the Freedom card and allows you to earn more for purchases not covered by the premium card’s bonus categories.

Another factor to consider in applying for the Chase Freedom Unlimited card is the Chase 5/24 rule. If you’ve opened more than five credit cards in the past 24 months from any issuer, you may not be approved for certain Chase cards. So choose your cards wisely.

  • Earn a $150 Bonus after you spend $500 on purchases in your first 3 months from account opening.
  • Get $100 cash back for each friend who gets the Freedom Unlimited® card.
  • Earn a $25 Bonus when you add your first authorized user and make your first purchase within this same 3-month period.
  • Earn unlimited 1.5% Cash Back on every purchase.
  • Redeem for Cash Back - any amount, anytime and your Cash Back rewards do not expire as long as your account is open.

Tips for Avoiding Interest on Credit Cards

Not paying interest on credit cards is a lot easier than you may think. If you have at least good credit, there is almost no reason you should be paying interest. There are a number of cards that can help you pay your debt off faster while earning rewards and saving on interest. Consider these tips to get out of the red and into the black.

  • Tip #1: Look for Introductory Rates

These are promotional rates for new card members that will expire. It is usually easy to find a plethora of low interest offers. The 0% period can be expected to last anywhere from 12 to 21 months. These are great for financing a substantial purchase while avoiding interest. With many of these cards you can save on interest while earning rewards.

Another great part of using a credit card to purchase an expensive item is that you may be eligible for purchase protection and extended warranty services. All cards offered by American Express and Discover, as well as some from Visa and MasterCard, come with purchase protection.

  • Tip #2: Take Advantage of Balance Transfers

It is important to know if a card’s low introductory interest rate on new purchases also applies to balance transfers. Balance transfers are great for not only saving on interest, but also consolidating your debt.

You can transfer all types of debt, not just from credit cards. Moving high interest balances to your new card can save you a whole lot of money. For example, if you are carrying $5,000 balance on a card that charges 15 percent interest, you can easily save $750 in interest alone over the course of a year if you transfer that debt to a new card with an introductory 0% APR.

  • Tip #3: Avoid Special Financing

I advise avoiding special financing on store credit cards at all costs. These credit cards usually advertise interest-free financing, but you may actually end up paying a lump sum of interest. Many store credit cards practice deferred interest. This means that if you have not paid your bill in full within the agreed upon time period you can be charged interest back to the original date of purchase. Interest rates on store credit cards are notoriously high, too.

If you have 18 months of interest-free financing, but you’re still carrying a balance in month 19, they will charge you interest for the whole previous 18 months. I would much rather get a lump sum of points with a rewards credit card instead of a lump sum of interest with a store credit card.

  • Tip #4: Make Your Monthly Payments

I use several credit cards in order to maximize my rewards. I put them all on auto-pay for the minimum amount so I am sure to never miss a payment. I also pay off in full all the cards that do not have a 0% promotional interest rate. If I am carrying a balance on a low interest card that I am not paying in full, I always pay more than the minimum and set a payment plan to make sure I clear it out by the time the introductory period ends.

  • Tip #5: Know the Rules

The Credit CARD Act of 2009, also known as the Credit Accountability Responsibility and Disclosure Act, is a federal statute that brought major reform to credit card legislation to help consumers pay off debt faster and avoid unnecessary interest payments. Prior to 2009, only the best credit cards offered a substantial grace period. However, times have changed.

Now all consumer credit cards must offer a grace period. This means cardholders have at least 21 days from the statement billing date to pay their balance in full without being charged any interest. Also thanks to the CARD Act, credit card companies must apply payments to high interest balances first. This makes debt easier to pay down and ultimately saves you money on interest.

  • Tip #6: Comparing Low Interest Credit Cards

When choosing a low interest credit card, there a variety of things to consider. Depending on your spending habits, you might want a card that offers more rewards for the things you buy the most. The types of rewards you earn from a card may play a big part your decision as well. How you can redeem your points and miles is important.

Ultimately, though, the amount of time it will take you to pay off your debt is probably the most important factor of all when you’re looking for a suitable promotional offer. You may think the longer the promotional period, the better. However, you may sacrifice the ability to earn more rewards for a longer interest-free period or lower balance transfer fee that you don’t need. So, the length of time does matter.

  • Tip #7: Longest Low Interest Periods

If you have a significant amount of debt or are using a card to finance a large purchase that will take a long time to pay off, a lengthy low interest or interest-free period is important. Two of the top cards for long periods of low interest are from Citi. Both the Citi Simplicity® Card and the Citi® Diamond Preferred® Card offer 0% APR on purchases and transfers for 21 months. Both cards also have a 3 percent balance transfer fee. However, neither card earns rewards or has a sign-up bonus.

  • Tip #8: Lowest Balance Transfer Fees

Although balance transfers on low interest rate credit cards with 0% promotional periods can save on interest, you may be charged a balance transfer fee to move that debt. These fees usually range between 2 and 5 percent.

However, the Chase Slate® Credit Card is one of the rare cards that does not charge a balance transfer fee as long as you make your transfer within 60 days of opening the account. When the 60 days is up, a 5 percent fee applies. With this card you will also receive a 0% intro APR for the first 15 months. However, this card does not earn any rewards.

  • Tip #9: Best Rewards

When you are comparing low interest credit cards, rewards can play a big part in your choice. Don’t just think about how you earn points or miles, but also consider how you can redeem them.

If you owe a large amount of debt, it may be best to focus on cashback rewards to help pay down your outstanding balance faster. You can easily redeem these rewards for a statement credit to help your bottom line. However, if you are going to use your new card to finance a purchase that will be paid off in a certain period of time, you may want to consider travel rewards which can add more value to the rewards you will accrue.

You could focus on maximizing your rewards through specified spending, such as quarterly bonuses. When it comes to rotating categories and quarterly bonuses, the Discover it card and its Double Cashback Bonus takes the cake. For new cardholders, Discover will match your cash back for the first year. This means your 5 percent quarterly bonus categories will actually earn 10 percent cash back. Those rotating bonus categories can include purchases made at department stores, gas stations, restaurants and more. All the cash back you earn will be doubled at the end of the year.

If you are looking for a low interest rate credit card that offers travel rewards, considerVentureOne® Rewards Credit Card. This card earns 0 miles on every purchase. This card will allow you to redeem your miles for any flight on any airline with no blackout dates.

TheDiscover it® Miles Card is also hot right now because the year-end double bonus applies to miles, too. This card lets you earn 1 miles on every purchase, every day. With the end of year bonus, that is like 3 miles per dollar spent.

Having a specific airline card can often get you more bang for your buck, and it may come with additional perks, too. Citi® / AAdvantage® Gold World Elite™ Mastercard® has a sign-up bonus of 25,000 American Airlines miles after making $750 in purchases in three months. That’s enough for a domestic round-trip ticket. This card has a $50 annual fee, but it is waved for the first year.

Some American Express, Chase and Citi cards allow you to transfer points to airline partners. Look for cards that are a part of the Membership Rewards, Ultimate Rewards or Citi ThankYou programs. Transferring usually adds more value to your points.

  • Tip #10: Top Sign-Up Bonuses

When looking for a card that has a low introductory interest rate, you’ll usually find that the sign-up bonuses aren’t as big as cards that charge interest right out of the gate. Bonuses will usually range between $100 and $200 with these cards.

However, the American Express Blue Cash line of cards is among the best when it comes to offering both a welcome bonus and a low APR. With these cards you can earn up to a total of $350 as a bonus. The Blue Cash Everyday offers a $100 bonus, and the Blue Cash Preferred offers a $150 bonus. To earn both, you have to spend just $1,000 within three months of opening your account. You’ll also get a one-time offer to earn additional cash back. These cards give 10 percent back at restaurants for the first six months for up to $200. This applies to fast food restaurants as well. This is a limited time offer.

Need more info? Check out our frequently asked questions. If you have other questions, don't hesitate to leave a comment below.

  • Compare your low interest options first. Don’t just sign up for a card because you got an offer in the mail and it says you are pre-approved. That is not a guarantee you will get the card. Shop around for a card. Take into account the low interest or interest-free promotional periods, rewards, sign-up bonuses and fees. Think about your spending habits too, and how long it will take you to pay off an existing balance.
Be sure to know your credit score, and apply for cards that are appropriate for your credit. If you have poor or fair credit, don’t apply for a card that requires good or excellent credit.
Once you settle on a low APR card, the easiest way to apply is online. You may also apply by phone or by mail. You will need to provide your name, address, social security number and income information. It is a simple process.
  • Many low interest credit cards come with a 0% introductory APR on purchases. In most cases, this 0% APR will last for several months and will apply to both purchases and balance transfers. If you are currently in debt, transferring your balance to a credit card with 0% APR is a great decision because it will allow you to continue to pay off your debt without accruing more interest.
The first step to transferring your balance to a low interest credit card is to gather all of the information you’ll need. This includes the account number and exact balance of the credit card carrying the debt. Once you have this information, the balance transfer can be easily completed over the phone or online.
To complete a balance transfer over the phone, contact customer service. This number can be found on the back of the low interest credit card that you wish to transfer your current balance to. The customer service representative will simply ask you a few security questions to verify your identity. Once your identity has been confirmed, you will be asked to provide the account number of the card carrying the balance and the amount of debt that you would like transferred. After the call is completed, it may take a couple of weeks for your balance transfer to be complete.
Requesting a balance transfer online is just as simple. Almost every bank offers online banking and most will allow you to request a balance transfer online. You will probably want to register for online banking when you receive your new card anyways.
After you’re registered for online banking, you can log into your account and find the new card you wish to have the balance transferred to. From there, you will either have to select an option that says Transfer Balances or View Balance Transfer Offers. After selecting this, you will be able to choose the low APR balance offer that you would like to use.
Once you have selected the balance transfer offer, you will be asked to provide the account number of the card carrying the balance and the total amount of debt that you wish to transfer. After submitting this information, you will be brought to a confirmation page. Once your request has been submitted, you must allow up to three weeks for the balance to successfully transfer. In the meantime, be sure to make the minimum payment until you confirm your transaction is complete.
  • Wait until approval for the card is complete so you can find out what your credit limit is in relation to the balance you need to transfer. If the limit does not meet your needs, don’t settle. Give it some time and apply for another card.
The higher your credit utilization is above 30 percent for a particular card, the more of a negative impact you will see on your credit score. So don’t transfer a balance that is more than 30 percent of your limit. If you have an excellent credit score, it might be worth going slightly above the 30 percent mark to consolidate your debt.
  • You can usually provide your account information directly to your new creditor in the case of a loan. However, if you need to pay someone who accepts only cash or checks, you may be able to use a balance transfer check.
These checks may come in the mail with your new card, or you may be able to request them. If you need cash, many banks allow you to write these checks out to yourself and deposit them right into your own bank account. These are not cash advances and will be eligible for the promotional low interest rate that you have on your new card. However, you will be charged a balance transfer fee of between 3 and 5 percent of the amount you transferred.
  • All American Express and Discover credit cards have purchase protection. However, the Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Elite™ MasterCard®, which offers purchase protection against theft or damage and also extended warranty service. The purchase protection on this card will reimburse you up to $1,000 per item and up to $50,000 per year.
The extended warranty service basically doubles the manufacturer’s warranty. This means that if your item came with a one year warranty, it will turn into a two year warranty.
If there is a problem with an item after its original warranty runs out, and you’re a World or World Elite MasterCard cardholder, you can have the item repaired, replaced or reimbursed for up to $500. Therefore, when you are making an expensive purchase, it is great to have the best of both worlds and avoid interest while having purchase protection and extended warranty services.
