Best Visa Credit Cards of 2017

Jennifer Blocker
Updated on: 11/08/2017

Visa cardholders are eligible for many benefits just for carrying a Visa-branded card. Keep in mind that Visa itself does not issue any credit cards. Most are issued by banks, and Visa is the payment network. In addition to the benefits mentioned here, each bank will offer its own benefits and rewards that are specific to each card. Many travel benefits come standard with Visa, Visa Signature and Visa Infinite credit cards. However, these are just the icing on the cake. Additional benefits will vary by issuer and can include things like lounge access, elite status at your favorite hotel or airline perks.

7 Top Rated Visa Credit Cards

There are three levels of Visa cards and each of them comes with their own benefits and perks. There are standard Visa cards, Visa Signature cards and, at the top, Visa Infinite cards. The Infinite cards are not easy to come by, but they offer unprecedented benefits for travelers seeking elite perks. Visa Infinite cards are only for those with excellent credit. They also usually carry high annual fees. Many basic Visa cards, on the other hand, have no annual fee. Sign-up bonuses and rewards will vary by issuer, but with a Visa you can expect to have access to some of the best rewards and benefits on the market.

Why should you get this card?

  • A Generous Sign-up Bonus: The 50,000-mile sign up bonus can be redeemed for $500 worth of travel.
  • Earnings Add up Quickly: Every dollar you spend earns 2 miles, not 1.5 or 1 like other cards. There are no categories or promotions to keep track of.
  • It’s Easy to Redeem Miles: Find the best travel deal, pay with your Venture Rewards card and redeem your miles for a statement credit to erase your purchase. Or just redeem your miles online from the Capital One Rewards Center.

Our Expert's Conclusion

With a sign-up bonus of 50,000 miles and the ongoing earning power of two miles for every dollar spent, there’s a good case for owning the Venture card. The $95 annual fee is waived the first year and you’ll have $460 to spend on travel once you’ve made the required $3,000 in purchases within the first three months. That makes this card a solid contender for your everyday spending. However, if you’re not going to be able to spend a minimum of $3,000 a year on the card, you would be better off selecting a card that has no annual fee.

  • Earn 50,000 bonus miles once you spend $3,000 on purchases within the first 3 months from account opening.
  • Earn unlimited 2X miles—that's 2 miles for every dollar you spend on purchases. 100 miles is equal to $1 in travel rewards.
  • Use your Venture® card to make travel purchases on any website or app—any airline, any hotel, rental cars and more.
  • Once you make a travel purchase with Venture, redeem your miles as a statement credit toward the cost. Your rewards don't expire.
  • No foreign transaction fees.
  • You're covered by $0 Fraud Liability if your card is ever lost or stolen.

  • Super Flexible Points: Transfer your points to a number of airline and hotel transfer partners, or redeem them directly through Chase at a rate of 1.5 cents each.

Our Expert's Conclusion

If you travel, even semi-frequently, the Chase Sapphire Reserve is probably a safe bet. While it seems scary to sign up for a card that has a $450 annual fee, you’ll get $300 back right away as soon as you start making travel purchases because of the card’s annual travel credit. This effectively reduces the annual fee to only $150, assuming that you spent at least $300 on travel each year.

Your travels will be more enjoyable and less worrisome too, with lounge access, a Global Entry fee credit and built in travel insurance that includes primary rental car coverage.

  • 50,000 bonus points after you spend $4,000 on purchases in the first 3 months from account opening. That's $750 toward airfare, hotels, car rentals and cruises when you redeem through Chase Ultimate Rewards®.

  • 25% Extra Points: Redeem points for travel through Chase’s online portal at a fixed rate of 1.25 cents per point, versus the standard rate of 1 cent per point offered by other Ultimate Rewards cards.

Our Expert's Conclusion

The Ink Business Preferred card is great for any small business owner or independent contractor who wants to quickly earn a large number of points in the Ultimate Rewards program. The 80,000 points sign-up bonus is the highest currently available for any card in Chase’s lineup.

The card will be most useful for those who can take advantage of the bonus categories. For small business owners who do a significant amount of spending in these categories, there is potential to earn a huge number of points.

  • 80,000 bonus points after you spend $5,000 on purchases in the first 3 months after account opening.* That's $1,000 toward travel rewards when you redeem through Chase Ultimate Rewards.

Our Expert's Conclusion

The U.S. Bank Altitude Reserve card is a little different than most premium travel rewards cards, but that’s a good thing. It offers a generous sign-up bonus, good rewards for everyday spending, lounge access, an annual travel credit, a TSA PreCheck/Global Entry fee credit and more.

It basically has all of the benefits of other premium credit cards except for the ability to transfer points to airline and hotel programs. While this does take away some of the options for using points compared with those other cards, it also means that the Altitude Reserve offers simpler redemptions which will save you time and hassle when it comes time to plan your trip.

Top Travel Benefits That Come With Visa Credit Cards

When traveling, keep your Visa card handy as it may have some hidden benefits you never knew about. As the cards go from basic to Infinite, each level has the previous level’s benefits plus additional ones. You might know about some of these benefits, but others may be surprising. Some of these benefits save money, some may save time and some may save you from a major headache.

  • Roadside Dispatch:

As a Visa cardholder, you will have access to Roadside Dispatch, which is an emergency roadside assistance program. Roadside Dispatch can be accessed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week by calling their toll-free number, 1-800-VISATOW.

The service comes standard as a Visa cardholder. There is no need for you to enroll in their Roadside Dispatch program and no membership is required to receive these services. Roadside Dispatch services currently have a flat rate of $59.95, but starting October 1, 2017, it will cost $69.95.

Visa’s Roadside Dispatch services include towing for up to five miles, with option to pay more if you would like to have the vehicle towed farther. Tire changing services are available if you have an already inflated spare tire that is in good shape. Roadside Dispatch also offers jump starting and winching services, as well as fuel delivery for up to five gallons.

  • Auto Rental Collision Damage Waiver

By using your Visa card to book a rental vehicle, you will be able to receive auto coverage for any damage that may occur as a result of a collision or theft. In order to activate Visa’s coverage, you must decline the rental company’s collision damage waiver (often abbreviated CDW) if you are offered one. This can save an average of $15 to $25 per day.

Visa Signature Card Benefits

Aside from the benefits you receive as a standard Visa cardholder, there are additional benefits that come with Visa Signature cards. Visa Signature cardholders will have access to all the benefits that come with a standard Visa card, with the addition of a some extra privileges.

  • Visa Signature Hotels

If you book a hotel stay with your Visa Signature card, the Visa Signature Hotels program will entitle you to receive additional benefits during your stay. Some of these perks include a best available rate guarantee, free room upgrades when available, complimentary in-room Wi-Fi when available, complimentary continental breakfast, food and beverage credits, VIP guest status and late check-out upon request.

  • Travel and Emergency Assistance Services

Many eligible Visa credit cards will include travel and emergency services. These services can be accessed by contacting a multilingual call center. It is available worldwide and 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. This service is not only available to the cardholder, but also to their spouse and any dependent children under the age of 22 who are traveling with them.

The service includes pre-trip assistance, which will provide you with any necessary information regarding currency exchange rates, health precautions, immunizations, Visas and weather. Medical referral assistance is available as well.

Emergency message services are available if you need them. Eligible cardholders receive prescription assistance in the event of unexpected prescription needs, along with valuable document recovery if you lose your passport, travel visa or any other valuable documents.

With Visa’s Travel and Emergency Assistance services, you will also have access to legal referrals. This means you will be able to arrange contact with attorneys as well as U.S. embassies and consulates. You can also receive bail bond assistance, cash advances and follow-up assistance.

Additional benefits include emergency ticket replacement, lost luggage service and emergency translation service.

One thing to keep in mind about Visa’s Travel and Emergency Assistance services is that it only offers assistance. You will still be the required to pay for any additional services if they are used.

  • Travel Accident Insurance

Hopefully you won’t need this coverage, but in the event of an accident, cardholders will get a minimum of $250,000 of accidental death or dismemberment insurance when they book a qualifying fare, such as an airline, bus or train ticket, and charge it to their Visa Signature credit card. This also covers the cardholder’s spouse and children under 23.

  • Lost Luggage Reimbursement

We all dread the thought of reaching our destination and seeing that baggage carousel circle and circle only to find out that our luggage is not there. If this happens after a flight that was paid for with your Visa Signature credit card, it will be covered. Visa will reimburse you for the value of the contents of your bag minus any payment you may have received from the carrier. Covers up to $3,000 per trip.

  • Concierge Service

This is like having an assistant at your disposal. These services are complimentary and available 24 hours a day. They can do things like make travel arrangements, book reservations, recommend restaurants and entertainment or direct you to business services. You can call 1-800-953-7392 within the U.S. or 630-350-4551 if you are traveling internationally.

Visa Infinite Card Benefits

Whether you are an avid traveler or new to collecting points and miles, there are some benefits that come with Visa Infinite cards that you should be familiar with. There are only a handful of Visa Infinite credit cards available in the U.S., including the The Ritz-Carlton Rewards® Credit Card and the Chase Sapphire Reserve℠. Both of these cards are issued by Chase and have a $450 annual fee. However, if you take advantage of the benefits and rewards these cards offer, they will easily outweigh the cost.

  • Global Entry Application Fee Credit

Global Entry gives preapproved low-risk travelers expedited clearance at customs upon arrival in the U.S. When the application fee is paid with a Visa Infinite credit card you will be reimbursed $100, which is the amount of the fee. Upon approval, you also receive TSA PreCheck privileges at no extra cost.

  • Trip Cancellation, Interruption and Delay Insurance

Stuck in the airport waiting for a delayed flight? Visa Infinite cardholders receive coverage for up to $500 a day in the event that a purchased trip is delayed more than six hours or requires an overnight stay.

In addition, you can plan your upcoming vacation with confidence knowing that when you use a Visa Infinite card to book, you are guaranteed up to $2,000 per itinerary for non-refundable expenses if the trip is interrupted or canceled for an eligible reason.

Not all reasons for canceling a trip will be covered by this policy. Cancelations due to serious illness or injury are covered. When requesting reimbursement, you will be required to show proof of your reason for cancelling.

  • $100 Off Companion Airfare

To get this benefit, you must purchase between two and five qualifying round-trip domestic coach tickets. This discount is per itinerary and not per ticket. So, you will get $100 off the entire booking, which means that five tickets will not save $500. You will save $100 total.

Note that this benefit is not available on all Visa Infinite cards. The Ritz-Carlton Rewards® Credit Card has it while the Chase Sapphire Reserve℠ does not. There is no limit to the amount of times you can use this benefit. To get the discount, you must book through visadicountair.com.

FAQs

Need more info? Check out our FAQ. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to leave a comment below.

  • When comparing Visa credit cards, benefits shouldn’t weigh heavily in your decision making. You should compare Visa card offers based on the rewards, fees, benefits, bonuses and promotions offered by the bank. These features will be specific to each card. Also, you should consider your spending habits to figure out which Visa will be the best for you.
The most important thing to keep in mind is that in order for you to get the most value out of your rewards you need to avoid paying interest. If you need to carry a balance, try a Visa with a low or no interest introductory period like the Bank of America® Cash Rewards™ Credit Card.
This card has 0% APR for the first 12 months. You also get a $100 cash back bonus after making $500 in purchases within the first 90 days. This card earns 3 percent back on gas and 2 percent on groceries for the first $2,500.
If you are looking for a substantial sign-up bonus, the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card is giving 50,000 points after spending $4,000 within three months. This card is part of the Ultimate Rewards program, which allows you to transfer points to travel partners. The sign-up bonus is worth about $625. This card has a $95 annual fee, but it is waived the first year.
Visa also has a variety of other banking partners and credit cards. Visa cards branded by hotels include some big names like Marriot, Hyatt and Hilton. There are many Visas that are branded by airlines too, including Jet Blue, Alaska Airlines, AeroMexico, United, Southwest and British Airways. There are even Visa credit cards that can help you get that cruise you have been dreaming of. Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, Holland America and Princess cruise lines all have Visa cards.
There is a Visa that will fit almost any set of circumstances. Most of these Visa credit cards require good or excellent credit. If you have bad credit, try applying for a secured Visa credit card or a Visa prepaid card.
  • Visa cardholders can enjoy peace of mind thanks to the fact that assistance for lost or stolen cards is just a phone call away. You can contact the Visa Global Customer Care Service Center and a Visa representative will cancel your card and send a replacement 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Don’t worry, Visa has a $0 liability policy. Zero Liability protects you from the potential threat of unauthorized use of your credit card or account information. The Zero Liability policy ensures that your liability for any unauthorized transactions is $0.
In addition to lost and stolen card reporting, Visa cardholders also have access to emergency card replacement and emergency cash disbursement. If your card is lost, stolen or damaged, you can contact Visa and have them immediately block your card from use.
Following bank approval, you can receive an emergency replacement card in 1 to 3 business days. Visa can also arrange to have emergency cash made available for pickup from a location near you within just a few hours of your bank’s approval. However, this may be looked at as a cash advance, so if possible, wait for the card.
  • Many Visa Signature cards carry purchase protection, which can protect you against theft or damage for up to 90 days after your purchase. You can be reimbursed up to $500 per item, with a maximum of $50,000 per year.
Visa Signature cards also provide an extension on your product’s warranty. This coverage applies to warranties of three years or less. The extension your warranty will receive is based on its overall length. Warranties that are under a year will have their overall length doubled. Warranties between 1 and 3 years will have an additional year added.
To receive the extended warranty on your Visa Signature card purchase, you must register your product after buying it. Product registration is a simple process that can be done online. Registering your product provides the claim center with necessary information that will be needed if a claim is filed. If you are reporting an item as stolen, you will need to furnish a police report.
Aside from the purchase protection available with Visa Signature cards, Visa Infinite cardholders also receive return protection. Return protection provides cardholders with coverage of up to $300 per item, and up to $1,000 per year on purchases that you would like to return, but will no longer be accepted by the retailer. In order for your purchase to be eligible for return protection, it must be purchased with a Visa Infinite card and a claim must be filed within 90 days of the date it was purchased.
In addition, a year end summary of your spending comes with Visa Signature cards, which is great for general budgeting and keeping track of expenses. Visa Signature cardholders will receive a detailed yearly report of their card spending. All spending will be organized into different categories. These categories include restaurants, merchandise, travel and entertainment.
  • Unless your business is incorporated and already has its own established business line credit, you will need good or excellent personal credit to be eligible for the best Visa business credit cards. A business credit card can be one of the most important steps in establishing your business credit. Although most business credit cards will still require a personal guarantee of repayment, it is best for the success of your business to have both good business and personal credit histories.

While it is best to have good credit, there may still be options to get a Visa business card if you have fair credit. However, keep in mind that the better your credit the more options you will have available to you. To get the top sign-up bonuses and the most lucrative rewards, you will need at least good credit.

  • The quickest and easiest way to both compare and apply for Visa credit cards is online. You can also apply by phone or by mail. You will need to be able to furnish your name, address, social security number and income information.

Even if you wish to do your application the old-fashioned way, the internet is still the best place to gather a plethora of information that can help direct you to the best possible Visa for you. You can compare sign-up bonuses, rewards and fees of various Visa credit cards all in one place.

To maximize your rewards, consider your spending habits. If you are considering a card with an annual fee, be sure that you are aware of all the benefits it comes with to be able to take advantage of them. Many cards that come with high annual fees also come with a massive amount of benefits that, if used correctly, far outweigh the cost.
