Guam, a Pacific island located between Hawaii and the Philippines, is a great place to relax and recharge. Its peaceful white-sand beaches are always just a step away from wherever you are, whether that’s one of the island’s elegant hotels, comfy bars or fantastic restaurants.
If you get tired of secluded beaches and beautiful views, Guam has some of the best diving sites in the world. Snorkeling, scuba diving, submarine tours and other water activities will keep you busy for as long as your heart desires.
Guam is a paradise filled with tropical fruits, indigenous plants, rare birds and fascinating animals like the monitor lizard, wild buffalo and fruit bat. The island’s unique natural sites will take your breath away, too. It has 32 waterfalls, 5 marine parks, colorful coral reefs and great jungle hikes.
As exotic and remote as it is, Guam is a U.S. territory. There are no fees, no visas and a U.S. passport is all you need to fly to there.
Guam International Airport is located three miles away from Hagåtña, the island’s capital. You can get there with miles from any of the major airline alliances: Star, oneworld or SkyTeam.
AAdvantage Miles and the Oneworld Alliance
Japan Airlines is the only oneworld alliance member that flies to Guam. Its flights are routed through Tokyo.
Before March 22, 2016, when the new rules for the AAdvantage program kick in, round-trip tickets from the U.S. cost:
- 70,000 miles in economy
- 110,000 in business
- 135,000 in first
If you fly after American’s March devaluation, round-trip tickets will cost:
- 65,000 to 75,000 miles in economy
- 140,000 in business
- 220,000 in first
MileagePlus Miles and the Star Alliance
The following Star Alliance members fly to Guam:
- United and United Express via Hong Kong, Honolulu, Manila, Nagoya-Centrair, Osaka, Sapporo, Shanghai, Tokyo and Saipan
- Eva Air via Taipei
Despite having a hub on Guam, United doesn’t fly there from the Continental United States.
Round-trip tickets from the U.S. purchased with MileagePlus miles cost:
- 70,000 miles in economy
- 130,000 to 150,000 in business
- 160,000 to 220,000 in first
SkyMiles and the SkyTeam
The following SkyTeam members fly to Guam:
- Delta Airlines via Nagoya, Osaka and Tokyo
- China Airlines via Taipei
- Korean Air via Busan, Osaka and Seoul
Round-trip tickets from the U.S. purchased with SkyMiles cost:
- 70,000 miles in economy
- 140,000 in business
First class tickets can’t be booked with SkyMiles.
After American’s devaluation in March, award tickets in all classes will cost about the same with all of the alliances. Before the change, though, both business and first class tickets are at least 20,000 miles cheaper when purchased with AAdvantage miles.
