Big things are underway with the new partnership between Alaska Airlines and Icelandair. This deal is good news: It gives members of Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan a way to earn miles when flying to Iceland. And to celebrate, you can earn double Mileage Plan miles on any Icelandair flight until December 15.
The agreement, which includes code-sharing, allows travelers to book flights with both carriers on the same itinerary. That will streamline connections for trips between North America and Europe. You’ll also be able to earn miles for either airline’s frequent flyer program when flying on Alaska or Icelandair. And if you have elite status with either program, you can visit both airlines’ airport lounges. The new deal goes into effect on November 1.
The Miles Nitty-Gritty
Alaska Airlines may be expanding its partnerships because of increased competition from Delta, which recently added routes out of Alaska’s Seattle hub. Over the summer, Alaska also added Hainan Airlines, a Chinese carrier, to its roster of partners. Both of these new partnerships give the airline’s already beefy rewards program even more traction.
With this deal, Icelandair brings a lot to the rewards party. Icelandair passengers can now credit their miles to Alaska’s Mileage Plan, and earn elite qualifying miles to boot. Members of Icelandair’s Saga Club will also be able to earn Saga Points when booking flights on Alaska Airlines.
It’s All About the Lounges
Whether traveling to Reykjavik to see the Northern Lights or catching a connecting flight at the Icelandair hub, Alaska MVP Gold and Gold 75K members will be able to relax at Icelandair’s Saga Lounge. The lounge offers visitors a taste of Iceland, with a fireplace crafted out of columnar basalt and a decorative cairn made of local rocks.
When flying with Alaska Airlines, Icelandair Gold and Silver elites will be able to take a minute to relax in Alaska’s Board Room Lounges in Seattle, Portland, Anchorage and Los Angeles. These lounges offer free Starbucks coffee and espresso, but you can also kick back with complimentary soda, juice, wine, beer, cocktails and snacks.
