How to Book LAN Airlines LANPASS Awards

icon-comments Comments

LAN Airlines is the flag carrier of Chile. Its main hub is Santiago National Airport. In 2012, LAN Airlines merged with the Brazilian TAM Airlines, creating the largest airline holding company in South America. The two carriers are slated to be fully integrated in 2018.

LAN Airlines operates a frequent flyer program called LANPASS. It uses a region-based award chart for LAN Airlines flights, and a distance-based chart for oneworld and other partners. LANPASS is a solid program offering its best redemptions on short flights.

LAN has both a U.S.-based transfer partner and credit card, so you can collect LAN kilometers with the LANPASS Visa Signature card and the Starwood Preferred Guest American Express card.

When Should You Use LANPASS Awards?

LAN offers excellent service in all cabins, including economy. You will have better food and more legroom on LAN than with most U.S. carriers flying to Latin America, plus an individual entertainment system. If you have a choice, it’s probably worth going with LAN.

In general, the cost of award flights are competitive with other programs. One-way redemptions for short flights of 500 kilometers or less on partner airlines cost only 6,000 LAN kilometers (3,728 miles) for economy. That’s about what you spend using British Airways’ Avios, which offers excellent rates on short hops.

Short flights between the U.S. and northern parts of South America are another good redemption. An award ticket between Miami and Lima costs 48,000 kilometers (29,825 miles), which is comparable to what AAdvantage would charge for the same flight.
