RewardExpert Releases Ranking of 2018’s Top U.S. Wine Destinations

Analyzes over two million wine reviews to determine the best locations in the United States for wine, both in terms of quantity and quality – and some of them may be surprising!

New York, N.Y. – Wine quality is notoriously difficult to gauge. Opinions vary greatly, even among professionals. And who’s to say a wine that isn’t lauded with awards and recognition can’t be enjoyable? In an effort to determine where U.S. travelers can find great wines based on both quality and quantity, RewardExpert – a free service that helps users take full advantage of credit card and travel rewards – today released its ranking of 2018’s Top U.S. Wine Destinations. Based on consumer reviews and wine production data, the ranking analyzes which wines consumers enjoy the most, and where they can enjoy them directly from the source.

“Our data found that delicious, popular wines can be find in all corners of our country,” says RewardExpert CEO and co-founder Roman Shteyn. “Many of our top destinations are found off the beaten wine trail that most folks are familiar with. So, it suffices to say; it pays not to judge a wine by its label, particularly when it comes to the origin.”

The top three destinations in RewardExpert’s ranking of 2018’s Top U.S. Wine Destinations are:

  1. Coschocton, Ohio – The area surrounding Coshocton, in east-central Ohio, is home to nine wineries and vineyards and 64,206 residents, or 1.40 wineries per 10,000 residents. Coal-country Ohio might not strike one as a top wine destination, but Coshocton is home to the most highly rated winery in the U.S. in the data set, and the highest average rated wines.
  2. Easton, Maryland – Second-place Easton, on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, likewise does not grace many top wine destination lists. However, the area’s 23 wineries and vineyards to 174,919 residents’ rates in the 95th percentile for wineries per capita. Wines produced in the region received an average rating of 94 (out of 100), making the region one with an abundance of high-quality wines.
  3. Kingston, New York – While the Finger Lakes region of Upstate New York is better known—it is home to a greater number of wineries both absolutely and per capita—the Hudson Valley region, centered on Kingston, New York, produces wine that has received better ratings. With about 150,000 residents and 11 wineries and vineyards, the region is no slouch when it comes to production, ranking in the 89th percentile for wineries per capita nationally.

“Wine travel is continuing to grow in popularity throughout the U.S.,” says Shteyn. “Ranging from wine aficionados to weekend escapists, travelers of all stripes are looking to experience regional wines straight from the source.”

The report utilizes a data set containing over two million consumer wine reviews, from which RewardExpert matched reviewed bottles of wine to specific wineries registered with and permitted by the U.S. Treasury Department Alcohol and Tobacco Trade Bureau (TTB). With this data, RewardExpert determined a ranking of the best wine producing areas of the U.S. down to the three-digit zip code level.
