Best Credit Cards with No Foreign Fee of 2018

Jennifer Blocker
Updated on: 05/18/2018

Nobody likes fees. Thankfully there are many choices when it comes to avoiding them. A credit card with no foreign transaction fees can be a very valuable tool for an avid traveler. Even if you do not travel, this is a great perk. Did you know it is possible to be charged this fee without ever leaving the country if you make online purchases from a merchant based outside the U.S.?

Not only can you avoid paying the fee by using the right credit card, but if you make most of your purchases with that card you will not have to exchange as much cash either. This can save money because you can skip the horrible rates offered at those exchange bureaus located in airports. Not to mention that you would have to pay again to change it back if you have some cash leftover at the end of your trip.

Some banks have affiliations with overseas financial institutions, but for the most part if you withdraw cash from an ATM without global partners you can end up paying a foreign transaction fee, whatever exchange rate they’re offering and ATM fees. The best way to avoid these fees (which can rack up fast) and get the best exchange rate is by using a no foreign transaction fee credit card when traveling overseas.

8 Top Rated Credit Cards with No Foreign Transaction Fee

Ever come back from a vacation abroad and review your statement only to find out that among all your expected charges there was a significant amount of money that was wasted on fees? Every time you withdraw money from the ATM or make a purchase with a card that charges a foreign transaction fee you’re essentially throwing away money. How you ask? Because you don’t have to pay these fees.

What is a foreign transaction fee? It is a charge by the card issuing bank which is basically unnecessary. They are not paying anything extra on these transactions, so why should you? These fees are especially unnecessary due to the number of credit cards available that do not charge them. If you travel often and are looking for a credit card that can help you add to your bottom line, it is a must to have a credit card with no foreign transaction fees.

    Our Expert's Conclusion

Capital One’s Quicksilver card is a great card for earning cash back. If you want to simplify your wallet and you value cash more than miles and points, this is the card for you. Since you can earn 1.5 percent back on every single purchase you make and never pay an annual fee, you can earn some serious cash on everyday purchases, big ticket items, all types of travel or whatever else you choose.

Again, since this card has no annual fee, there’s little downside to the Quicksilver credit card. Yet, it still comes with the elevated MasterCard World Elite protections. As far as travel cards go, this is not a premium card that helps earn status, free checked bags or lounge access, but if you’re an occasional traveler or prefer to fly economy, this card is still a good bet. The cashback you earn can be used toward travel or any other purchase you make. Flexibility makes this a great card.

    • One-time $150 cash bonus after you spend $500 on purchases within 3 months from account opening.
    • Earn unlimited 1.5% cash back on every purchase, every day.
    • No rotating categories or sign-ups needed to earn cash rewards; plus, cash back won't expire for the life of the account and there's no limit to how much you can earn.

    Our Expert's Conclusion

The short answer is absolutely. Depending on your travel and spending habits, this card may or not make sense for you after the first year when you start paying the annual fee, but earning 60,000 miles after meeting the minimum spend and earning 2X miles on all purchases are tremendous benefits. Not only that, but if this becomes your go-to card, miles will rack up fast, and with the 5 percent redemption bonus, that’s like earning 2.1 percent back on every purchase, every day. This card is just as good as any other cashback card currently on the market.

    Our Expert's Conclusion

The JetBlue Plus card is great for frequent JetBlue travelers. The annual anniversary bonus makes this card relatively cheap to have. For anyone that flies at least 2 to 3 times a year on JetBlue, the free checked bag benefit alone can pay for the card.

More than that, this card has significantly better earning power than most co-branded airline cards. With 2x points at both restaurants and grocery stores, plus an impressive 6x points for JetBlue purchases, there are a ton of opportunities to rack up the points and earn your next free flight quickly.

    Our Expert's Conclusion

You can get excellent value out of ThankYou points, particularly if you transfer them to airlines and redeem for expensive premium cabin tickets. If you are a traveler that often books the cheapest economy class ticket, then there can also be strong value in redeeming points through the ThankYou program’s travel portal thanks to the 25 percent discount offered by this card.

If you are interested in domestic award travel or simple award redemptions, this card may prove to be too complex. Instead, consider cards with more domestic transfer partners. You may not get quite the same value for your points, but there will be more availability and easier redemptions.

    • Not Subject to Chase’s 5/24 Rule: If you’ve already opened five or more cards in the last 24 months, Chase’s notorious 5/24 rule won’t hurt your chances of getting approved.

    Our Expert's Conclusion

Although British Airways Avios aren’t hard to come by, this credit card is a great way to earn even more with the extremely generous sign-up bonus. And because British Airways Executive Club offers some great redemption opportunities on its own metal and with oneworld carriers, you don’t need to be a frequent British Airways customer to get a lot of value out of the card.

With only a 95 annual fee, the sign-up bonus more than outweighs the cost of the card. Plus, if you spend $30,000 or more each year, the Travel Together Ticket carries some serious value that completely offsets the annual fee.

    • Earn 50,000 bonus Avios after you spend $3,000 on purchases within the first 3 months of account opening. Plus earn an additional 25,000 bonus Avios after you spend $10,000 on purchases within your first year of account opening, plus a further 25,000 Bonus Avios after you spend $20,000 total on purchases within your first year from account opening.

What to Know When Comparing Cards with No Foreign Transaction Fees

If you are looking for a card with no foreign transaction fees you are probably planning some international travel. In that case, I recommend getting a card with a chip because it’s necessary to complete some types of transactions overseas. I also suggest having several credit cards on you when traveling in case one is declined. It is good to have cards from several issuers, too (like Visa, MasterCard and Amex). However, it is not recommended to apply for more than one card at a time.

When comparing cards, there are factors to consider that are subjective and will be based on your spending habits and things that are unique to you. But here are some general things to consider:

    Fees:
Assess all possible fees that may be associated with a card, such as interest rates and annual fees. Although some of the best travel cards may not have the lowest interest rates and may even charge high annual fees, there are a variety of cards that offer a promotional interest rate and no annual fee.
It all depends what you want to get out of your card. If you are an avid traveler, an annual fee card is not out of the question because of the additional benefits they provide. Those benefits can sometimes allow you to avoid additional costs, such as baggage fees and the like. They can also easily outweigh the cost of the fee.
As far as interest rates go, they can easily be avoided by not carrying a balance. If you need to carry a balance, you should use a card with a promotional interest rate or a low ongoing interest rate, depending on how much time it might take to clear your debt.
    Bonuses:
Look for a welcome bonus. Most major banks offer them. They are now in their heyday, but may not last forever. The time to capitalize on these is now. They are currently very competitive and have reached unprecedented heights. If you have good to excellent credit, your options are almost limitless.
Sign-up bonuses have become so popular that they are sought after by travel hackers, who love to travel for nearly free using travel awards. Bonuses have reached as high as 75,000 points, which is more than enough to pay for a vacation.
    Rewards:
Look for good reward rates. Most percentage-based reward rates can be understood in terms of pennies to the dollar. If a card earns 1 percent, then you’ll earn back one penny per dollar spent in rewards. I never like to get less than 2 percent on anything, and 5 percent really makes me happy. That’s a nickel return for every dollar spent, which is a great, though rare, for credit card rewards.
To get the most out of your rewards, think about things like how you spend your money and what the reward rate will be. Some cards have rotating categories that change the amount of money you earn in a certain category for a particular timeframe. Most travel cards will give high reward rates for not only travel, but also for other activities like dining out. So how and where you use your card will be key to what you can get out of it.

Tips to Avoid Fees on Your Credit Card

Not only is it possible to avoid credit card fees altogether, but it is possible to earn money from them. That’s right, cold hard cash in your hands. And you can make those rewards even more valuable if you redeem them for travel. But don’t negate the awards you’ve earned by paying unnecessary fees.

    • Have a card with no foreign transaction fee

Three percent may not sound like a lot, but it can add up quick. This fee is easily avoidable because so many cards don’t charge it. There is just no reason to pay to make purchases abroad. A penny saved is a penny earned.

Most of the major issuers, including Chase, Citibank and American Expresss, offer credit cards that have no foreign transaction fees. None of the cards offered by Capital One and Discover have foreign transaction fees, either. However, if you are traveling outside of the Caribbean or Mexico, a Discover card may not be useful as they are not as widely accepted abroad. Therefore, it is highly recommended that everyone have at least one card that uses a well-known network, like Visa or MasterCard, that does not charge a foreign transaction fee.

    • Pay in the local currency when possible

If purchasing goods or services internationally, always use a credit card and pay in the local currency when possible. In some cases you may be given an option to pay in U.S. dollars. If you choose to pay in U.S. dollars, you may be charged a high exchange rate. This is different from a foreign transaction fee and is charged when the money is converted. The payment network, such as Visa or MasterCard, sets the exchange rates for card transactions in foreign currencies, and they can change on a daily basis.

    • Consider skipping the annual fee

Most banks also offer cards that do not charge an annual fee. It’s not hard to find a fee-free rewards card that has a promotional interest rate and a welcome bonus. However, I am not against paying an annual fee if the benefits, or even the sign-up bonus alone, make it worth the extra cost. Keep in mind that in many cases banks will waive the annual fee for the first year.

    • Avoid paying interest

Pay your bills on time and do not carry a balance. That is the best way to avoid paying interest. Most credit cards offer a grace period, which usually expires within 21 days of the issuance of the billing statement. So, if you pay your bill in its entirety within that timeframe, you will not be charged any interest. However, if you are already carrying a balance, try a balance transfer to a card with a 0% promotional interest rate.

    FAQs

Need more info? Check out our frequently asked questions. If you have other questions, don't hesitate to leave a comment below.

    • Why do some cards charge a foreign transaction fee?

Every time you make a purchase overseas or make a purchase that uses a foreign bank to process the transaction, you may be charged a fee of about 3 percent. The payment network which processes the purchase, like Visa or MasterCard, will get part of the fee, while the rest goes to the bank.

This charge is ultimately just a way to make money since it has nothing to do with converting from a foreign currency to U.S. dollars. Those are known as exchange rates. If you are shopping at a retailer overseas and you use a credit card to pay in the local currency, you will get the best exchange rate. If possible, do not pay in U.S. dollars when overseas so you will get a better exchange rate.

With the competitive credit card market, many cards have eliminated foreign transaction fees to draw in more customers, as they ultimately had nothing to do with the cost of doing business. The choices are now broader than ever when it comes to obtaining a card with no fees.

    • How was I charged a foreign transaction fee if I haven’t traveled anywhere?

You may have made a purchase from a foreign website. Did you have something shipped to you from overseas? Anytime payment is made to a foreign bank you can be charged this fee. This is different from the exchange rate. Banks usually set the foreign transaction fees, and payment networks, like Visa and MasterCard, usually set the exchange rates.

Credit cards that do not charge foreign transaction fees are best, and you will be sure to avoid this unnecessary cost. These fee-free cards aren’t only for those who travel since there are many cards that are great for daily use and have other benefits as well.

    • How much money can I save by using a card with no foreign transaction fee?

If you use the typical rate of 3 percent for the foreign transaction fee, we can calculate a sum for any given budget. For example, let’s say you spend $1,000 on a hotel stay, $500 on entertainment and $500 on meals, for a total of $2,000. You would be charged $60 in foreign transaction fees.

This is money that you don’t have to spend. Having a card with no foreign transaction fees would offer a significant savings on that one trip. And if you travel often or even just shop often at a foreign retailer, you’ll save even more. Keep in mind that cards with no foreign transaction fees are not only popular travel cards. Many everyday cards do not charge that fee either.

    • How do American chip cards work abroad?

American and European chip technology is not exactly the same. Although American chip cards are more recognizable abroad, they generally don’t have the chip and PIN technology that overseas cards do. You may have a chip in your card, but the PIN you use to withdraw money from the ATM in the U.S. is not the same as a PINyou would use to complete a credit card transaction abroad. That’s because U.S. cards use chip and signature technology instead of chip and pin. We have the chip but still need a signature to complete transactions.

The instances where this may be a problem is at unmanned kiosks outside the U.S., such as at foreign train stations. However, at many tourist destinations, such as the Paris Metro and the London Underground, American chip cards can be processed without an attendee. If you encounter a problem, some of these systems allow payment or ticket purchases via the internet.

    • Will a card with 0% foreign transaction fees be of benefit to me if I do not travel?

Yes, it could save you money even if you don’t travel. It wouldn’t be as valuable to you as it would to an avid traveler, but it may come in handy.

Did you know you do not have to travel abroad to be charged this fee? With the popularity of online shopping it is easier than you might think to purchase merchandise from a foreign retailer without even knowing it. Why take that chance? Not only are there plenty of travel credit cards that don’t charge foreign transaction fees, but also a lot of cards that are great for everyday use.

There are cards with no foreign transaction fees that also have no annual fee, great rewards and even low promotional interest rates. There are also business credit cards with no foreign transaction fees, so whether you travel a lot or not, this benefit traverses such a broad range of cards it should be a no-brainer to have at least one in your wallet.

    • What is an international credit card?

An international credit card is simply a credit card that can be used in other countries around the world. If you have a credit card that brandishes a well-recognized logo, such as Visa or MasterCard, it is an international credit card. American Express Credit cards, despite the name, are accepted abroad as well. But just because you have an international credit card, it does not mean that you won’t be charged foreign transaction fees. Be sure if you are traveling that you have a card that does not charge this fee. There is no point to these fees and they are unnecessary.
    • Why should I notify the bank if I am planning to travel abroad?

You should notify the bank associated with any cards you plan use that you’ll be traveling overseas to avoid being declined due to potentially fraudulent activity. This is not likely to happen, but it is a small step to help promote security.

This is especially important if you plan on visiting several different countries on one itinerary. I would always advise having several forms of plastic to choose from in case you’re declined, as well as having a small amount of foreign currency on you at all times.

    • What is chip and PIN technology?

Chip and PIN technology, also known as EMV, is widely used throughout Europe and several other places, such as Canada. Although America has embraced chip cards, the technology is not exactly the same. With chip and PIN cards you use a PIN number to make a payment, whereas American chip cards still using signatures to complete transactions. However, there are some U.S. credit cards that offer chip and PIN technology, like the JetBlue Plus card and the Barclaycard Arrival Plus World Elite MasterCard. Both of these cards have no foreign transaction fees.
    • Are there debit cards that have no foreign transaction fees?

There are some banks that do not charge foreign transaction fees on their debit cards. For instance, Capital One 360 account holders will not have to pay foreign transaction fees. However, this is not the norm. Most debit cards will charge a foreign transaction fee of about 3 percent.

If you are withdrawing from a foreign ATM, you will probably get hit with fees from both your bank and the bank who owns the ATM. These ATM fees would be in addition to any foreign transaction fees. ATM fees can range from $1 to $5 on each side, plus you’ll pay a 3 percent fee on top of that. You could end up paying a pretty penny just for using a foreign ATM. I do recommend having a small amount of foreign currency on you at all times when traveling. However, it is better to make any possible purchases with a credit card that has no foreign transaction fees.

    • Is a credit card with no international fee the same as no foreign fees?

In general, I would say that an international fee referenced in the context of a credit card would pertain to foreign transaction fees. However, it is good to know that even if you have a credit card with no foreign transaction fee, you may still have to pay the exchange rate if you choose to pay in U.S. dollars instead of the local currency. I am not sure why this option is even offered except to make the merchant a little extra money. I can see how people may get tricked into it if they do not know any better. They may want to know what the purchase is costing them in U.S. dollars. If this is the case, just Google it or ask the vendor. If you choose to pay in U.S. dollars, you can get hit with a poor exchange rate and potentially other fees. To avoid paying these fees, use a credit card with no foreign transaction fees and always pay in the local currency.
