2017Best Miles Credit Card of the Year

The Capital One Venture Rewards credit card is a solid choice for its healthy everyday earning potential, valuable sign-up bonus and hassle-free redemptions.

There’s no need to keep track of quarterly promotions or special bonus categories. Every dollar you spend on the card earns 2 miles, not just one mile or even 1.5 miles, which you earn for everyday spending with most other cards. You’ll also receive a generous 50,000 miles sign-up bonus after spending $3,000 within the first 3 months. At one cent per mile in redemption value, that’s $400 in travel.

Redeeming your miles is easy as well. You can use miles to get statement credits for past travel purchases, or you can redeem miles for future travel via the Capital One Rewards Center. While the card comes with a $95 annual fee, it’s waived for the first year.

Bonuses and Benefits

Knowing what benefits come with a credit card can help you decide if it’s a good fit for you. Here we cover the bonuses and perks that the Venture® Rewards Credit Card offers and the value of the Capital One Venture® Rewards miles you earn.

Bonuses

Get a jump start accumulating miles for your next travel purchase with a 50,000 miles sign-up bonus after you spend $3,000 on the card within the first 3 months. That’s $500 worth of travel you can use right away. You’ll receive two miles for every dollar spent, so your $3,000 in purchases will earn an additional 6,000 miles, for a total value of $460 when redeemed for travel.

What You Get

  • Earn 50,000 miles after you spend $3,000 on purchases in the first 3 months
  • Every purchase earns  2  miles per dollar

Since your Venture miles do not expire as long as your account is open, you’ll have plenty of time to build a bank of miles to use for that annual family trip or your own personal adventure.

What is the value of the Venture® Rewards Miles?

Whether you redeem your Venture miles directly through the Capital One Rewards Center or choose a statement credit to erase previous travel purchases, each mile is redeemable at a rate of one cent each. A $500 airline ticket will cost you 50,000 miles. Keep in mind that you’re also earning 2 miles for every dollar spent on your card, so you essentially get two cents in travel for every dollar you spend.

What is CPM and How Is It Calculated?

Cents Per Mile (CPM) is a way to measure the value of miles or points. It tells you how many cents you get for each mile or point you redeem by dividing the cash price of the airline ticket by the number of miles or points the award flight costs. That amount is multiplied by the number of miles or points earned per dollar spent on everyday purchases to account for cards that earn more than one mile per dollar spent.

The Best Ways to Redeem Capital One Miles

The best redemption for Capital One Venture miles is cheap airfare, hotels, travel experiences or other transportation. Simply find the best travel deal from either the Capital One Rewards Center or any other source. Use your miles to make purchases from the Rewards Center, or use your Venture Rewards card to make purchases from any other retailer and redeem miles for a statement credit using the Capital One Purchase Eraser.

Qualified travel purchases include airfare, hotels, rail tickets, rental cars, limo services, buses, cruises, taxis, travel agents and time shares. If you’re looking for first class or other premium flights that cost thousands of dollars, redeeming Venture miles may not be the best value. For instance, a $4,000 flight would cost 400,000 miles. You may be able to redeem frequent flier miles for the same ticket for much less.

Fees: the cost of Having the Card

The Venture Rewards card has an annual fee of $95 , which is waived the first year. If you make $2,950 in purchases a year, you’ll cover the cost of the card. That’s because you’ll earn 5,900 miles for those purchases and the miles can be redeemed for a penny per point.

You’ll also receive 50,000 miles as a sign-up bonus after spending $3,000 in the first three months after card approval. The sign-up bonus plus the miles earned from your $3,000 in purchases totals $460 in travel.

Top 5 Benefits of the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card

A hefty sign-up bonus of 50,000 miles and earnings that add up quickly are reasons enough to have the Venture Rewards card. Add the ease of redemption, a first year fee waiver and Visa Signature travel benefits and you’ve got a nice package for an everyday spending card.

  1. A Generous Sign-up Bonus: The 50,000 miles sign up bonus can be redeemed for $500 worth of travel.
  2. Earnings Add up Quickly: Every dollar you spend earns 2 miles, not 1.5 or 1 like other cards. There are no categories or promotions to keep track of.
  3. It’s Easy to Redeem Miles: Find the best travel deal, pay with your Venture Rewards card and redeem your miles for a statement credit to erase your purchase. Or just redeem your miles online from the Capital One Rewards Center.
  4. Annual Fee Waiver: You won’t pay the $95 fee the first year.
  5. Visa Signature Travel Benefits: Receive valuable benefits, such as coverage for rental cars, trip interruption insurance, 24/7 emergency assistance and concierge services.

Should You Get the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card?

With a sign-up bonus of 50,000 miles and the ongoing earning power of two miles for every dollar spent, there’s a good case for owning the Venture card. The $95 annual fee is waived the first year and you’ll have $460 to spend on travel once you’ve made the required $3,000 in purchases within the first three months. That makes this card a solid contender for your everyday spending. However, if you’re not going to be able to spend a minimum of $3,000 a year on the card, you would be better off selecting a card that has no annual fee.

FAQs

Need more info? Check out our frequently asked questions. If you have other questions, please click on “Ask Now” below.

  • When you compare sign-up bonuses, the Capital One Venture Rewards card offers 50,000 miles, while the Capital One VentureOne card offers just 20,000 miles. Looking at earning potential, the Venture card earns 2 points per dollar, while the VentureOne card earns 1.25 miles per dollar. Miles will add up quicker with the Venture card.

In regards to using your miles, both cards offer easy redemptions for travel purchases at the rate of one cent each. While the Venture card has a higher sign-up bonus and greater earning potential, it comes with a $95 annual fee that is waived for the first year. The VentureOne card does not have an annual fee. If you’re not going to spend at least $2,950 per year on the Venture card, go with the no-fee VentureOne.

  • All Venture cardholders receive a comprehensive package of Visa Signature perks and benefits. When you are approved for the card, a guide will be sent to you that explains all of the benefits Visa Signature offers. These will include perks like preferred seating and priority access to sporting and entertainment events. You’ll also receive VIP treatment, including upgrades and breakfast at over 900 Visa Signature Luxury Hotel Collection properties.

Other benefits include purchase and travel benefits, such as extended warranty protection, purchase damage/theft coverage, 24-hour concierge service, lost luggage reimbursement, travel accident insurance, auto rental collision damage waivers and more.

  • Not only can you redeem miles with any airline, hotel or rental car company, but the redemption process to do so is simple. You can redeem your miles for the value of one cent each in one of two ways.

The first way is to make a qualifying travel purchase with your Venture Rewards card and then redeem your miles for a statement credit that wipes out the charge for that purchase. It’s called Purchase Eraser. Qualifying travel purchases include purchases made from airlines, hotels, rail lines, rental car agencies, limo services, bus lines, cruise lines, travel agents and time shares.

The second way to redeem your miles, also at one cent each, is to book travel directly via the Capital One Rewards Center. The great news is that you can just search for the best deal anywhere and redeem your Venture Rewards miles accordingly. It’s your choice.

  • Your Capital One Venture Rewards miles are each worth one cent, so the less travel costs, the further your miles will go. Venture miles work well for inexpensive airfare. For instance, a $400 fare will cost you 40,000 miles. If the airfare costs thousands of dollars, you may get a better value utilizing your airline frequent flier miles or transferring points from other credit card programs.

For example, a round-trip ticket to Europe may cost only 60,000 frequent flier miles, but $1,500 in cash. This would equate to 150,000 Venture miles. In this situation it is not the best use of your miles. Other good options for using your Venture miles may include train, ferry and bus tickets or for tours and hotel stays. You can’t purchase those types of travel with frequent flyer miles.

Other Venture® Rewards cards

Should you choose the Venture card over the VentureOne card? Both have good earning potential, the same easy redemption process and the added value of Visa Signature level travel benefits. But there are some important differences.

The Venture Rewards card has a sign-up bonus of 50,000 miles, but the VentureOne offers only 20,000 miles. However, the Venture card has an annual fee of $95 after the first year, which would require at least $2,950 in annual spending to offset that fee. If you’re not going to spend at least that much annually, you would fare better in the long run with the no-fee VentureOne card. You’ll still earn 1 miles for every dollar spent.

That said, a 50,000 miles sign-up bonus worth $500 is generous and miles can add up quickly at two miles per dollar spent. You also might want that quick $500 in travel for an upcoming trip.

Compare Capital One Venture® Rewards Credit Card to Other Cards

All of the cards below allow you to redeem miles and points for travel purchases, but when it comes to redemption value, flexibility and a no-hassle process, the differences surface. The Starwood Preferred Guest card has vast redemption options through its travel partners, while the Citi and Chase cards gain an advantage at redemption only when paired with premium cards by the same issuer. The Capital One Venture Rewards card boasts simplicity in its earning and redemption processes, but it has its limitations.

50,000miles offer
Venture® Rewards Credit Card

Check if Venture® Rewards Credit Card is the best option for you

The Venture card has the highest sign-up bonus of the group at 50,000 miles, but it also comes with a $95 annual fee. The card is also the only one that earns two miles per dollar for all purchases, so your miles can add up quickly.

The Starwood Preferred Guest card earns 1 point per dollar spent on all purchases, plus bonuses for purchases at affiliated hotel properties. The Chase Freedom offers quarterly bonus categories where you can earn 5X points on up to $1,500 in purchases, but otherwise you’ll get just 1 point per dollar. And the Citi ThankYou Preferred offers 2X points for just dining and entertainment. Everything else gets just 1 point per dollar.

When it comes to redemption, there are striking differences. The SPG Amex card has strong redemption value and flexibility with 30 airline transfer partners and a 5,000 miles bonus when you transfer 20,000 points to an airline. You can also redeem points at over 1,500 hotels in the Marriott family of properties. If you’re looking for a hotel credit card with flexible redemption options, it’s an excellent choice, even with the annual fee.

The Chase Freedom card and Citi ThankYou Preferred card redeem points at the value of one cent each. However, if you hold a premium Chase or Citi card in their respective rewards programs, you can transfer points to airlines and potentially redeem them at a much higher value. With no companion premium card, you’ll have the limited option of only redeeming your points through a travel portal at one cent each.

For everyday spending, easy redemption for travel purchases and a nice sign-up bonus, the Venture Rewards card holds its own. That’s especially true if redeeming miles for expensive premium flights is not your priority.
