Chase United MileagePlus® Club Credit Card
If your airline loyalty lies with United and you enjoy traveling in style, the United MileagePlus Club card might be the perfect fit for you. Luxury travel benefits, such as airport lounge access and plush hotel rooms, can be pricey, but for less than the cost of a United Club lounge membership, you’ll be treated like royalty with elite privileges from United, Hyatt, Hertz and the Luxury Hotel & Resort Collection.
United Club lounge membership is included with the card, creating a luxurious package for the avid United Airlines traveler. The benefits don’t stop there. You’ll also receive free checked bags, priority boarding and services, fee waivers, a dedicated customer service phone line, travel companion benefits, concierge access and the ability to earn and redeem miles for free travel.
Yes, the card does come with a hefty $450 annual fee, but if you value luxury travel benefits you may have met your new card. Plus, you’ll get a quick 50,000 miles sign-up bonus that’s potentially worth over $810 in airfare.
Bonuses and Benefits
Knowing what benefits come with a credit card can help you decide if it’s a good fit for you. Here we cover the bonuses and perks that the Chase United MileagePlus® Club Card offers and the value of the Chase MileagePlus® miles you earn.
In addition to the 50,000 miles sign-up bonus that you’ll get if you spend $3,000 within three months of account opening, the United MileagePlus Club card also comes with some excellent perks. One of the most valuable is United Club lounge membership that’s worth $550 a year. These two bonuses alone more than cover the annual fee in the first year. You’ll earn valuable miles on every purchase at 1.5 miles for every dollar spent and 2 miles per dollar on United Airline purchases. Elite membership in World of Hyatt and Hertz Gold Plus Rewards loyalty programs and special offers and upgrades through the Luxury Hotel & Resort Collection add to the package.
What You Get
- Earn 50,000 miles after you spend $3,000 on purchases in the first 3 months
- Free MileagePlus Club lounge access
- Discoverist elite status with Hyatt
- President’s Circle elite status with Hertz
- Free upgrades and privileges with the Luxury Hotel & Resort Collection
- 2 X miles per dollar spent on all United purchases
- 1.5 X miles per dollar for all other puchases
As long your United MileagePlus Club card is open, your miles won’t expire. Should the card be cancelled, any miles that have not yet transferred to your frequent flier account will be lost. Miles held in your MileagePlus frequent flier account do not expire as long as you have qualifying activity on your account.
What is the value of the MileagePlus® Miles?
Saver level economy award tickets for domestic flights can offer good value for your miles, but they may be difficult to find. Redeeming for economy tickets between the U.S. and Europe at 60,000 miles roundtrip also offers great value. And economy award tickets to Mexico and the Caribbean start at just 35,000 miles roundtrip. Another great redemption option is for first class saver awards on partner airlines. A first class one-way award on Thai Airways between Sydney, Australia, and Hong Kong, including an overnight in Bangkok, can be booked for as little as 40,000 miles.
What is CPM and How Is It Calculated?
Cents Per Mile (CPM) is a way to measure the value of miles. It tells you how many cents you get for each mile you redeem by dividing the cash price of the airline ticket (minus taxes and fees charged for an award ticket) by the number of miles the award flight costs. This is a somewhat subjective calculation because the price of the flight in both cash and miles fluctuates by season and availability.
How we calculate CPM:
The Best Ways to Redeem MileagePlus Miles
You’ll get the best redemption value for the miles earned with your United MileagePlus Club card for award tickets on United Airlines and its airline partners. Saver fares are the best, especially for economy round-trip tickets to Europe, the Caribbean and South America, and for first class partner flights in Asia. While there are several other options for redeeming miles, the value you receive can often be far less.

There’s no need to keep track of bonus categories or quarterly promotions. You’ll earn a total of two miles for every dollar you spend on tickets with United.

Pay your $100 electric bill with your card, for example, and receive 150 miles.

The United MileagePlus Club card does not offer a way to earn elite status or elite-qualifying miles in the United MileagePlus frequent flier program. If you spend $25,000 on the card in a calendar year, however, one of the requirements for earning elite status will be waived. The PQD (Premier Qualifying Dollars) requirement, which refers to spending a specified amount of money with the airline, will be waived as a requirement for attaining status up to and including Premier Platinum.
While you don’t get status with United, the Club card does come with instant status with Hertz and Hyatt. You’ll get Discoverist status with World of Hyatt and President’s Circle status with Hertz Gold Plus Rewards.
- Premier Qualifying Dollars (PQD) requirement is waived after spending $25,000
- Instant Discoverist elite status with Hyatt
- Complimentary President’s Circle status with Hertz
Fees: the cost of Having Chase United MileagePlus® Club Card
The Club card’s annual fee is $450 . If you received no other benefits of value, you would have to spend $ 18,519 in the first year to cover the cost of the card. This spending level would generate 27,778 miles. When valued at about 1.62 cents each, it would offset the annual fee. Since you’ll receive a United Club membership worth $550 and a 50,000 miles bonus potentially worth over $810 when you get the card, the benefits alone can more than cover the cost of the annual fee.
- Late Payment Fee
Up to $15 if the balance is less than $100; up to $27 if the balance is $100 to less than $250; up to $37 if the balance is $250 or more
- Balance Transfer Fee
Either $5 or 5% of the amount of each transfer, whichever is greater
- Annual Fee
- Foreign Transaction Fee
See What It Takes to Cover an Annual Fee:
We strongly recommend to spend not less than $6,173 per months to cover the annual fee in three months.

Should You Get the United MileagePlus® Club Card?
If United is your airline of choice, and you value luxury travel benefits, there’s a lot to love about the Club card. After paying the $450 annual fee, you can savor the United Club lounge access in the U.S. and Star Alliance lounges worldwide. The lounge access alone would cost $550 per year.
You’ll also enjoy priority boarding, plus the savings from fee waivers for last minute award tickets and checked bags. Hyatt and Hertz elite benefits, luxury hotel upgrades and perks, and concierge services are icing on the cake. It’s a sweet little luxury package for the United Airlines traveler.
You’ll also be earning at a rate of 2 miles per dollar for United Airlines purchases and 1.5 miles for all other purchases. For less travel perks you might opt for the United MileagePlus Explorer card with its lower $95 fee and matching 60,000 miles sign-up bonus, but you won’t get the fantastic travel benefits of the Club card.

How does the United MileagePlus Club card work for lounge access? Do I have to be traveling on United?
To access the United Club lounge, you do not have to be traveling on a United Airlines reservation; you can be traveling on any airline. However, for Star Alliance affiliated lounges, you will need to hold a same day ticket issued by a Star Alliance member airline. Another great benefit of holding the United MileagPlus Club card is that you can also bring up to two travel companions with you into the United lounge. For Star Alliance affiliated lounges, you and one additional guest are allowed. When your card is approved, it takes about five days to link your United MileagePlus frequent flier account to your United MileagePlus Club card. You’ll receive the actual membership card a couple weeks after approval. Prior to your card’s arrival, access the lounge by providing your linked MileagePlus frequent flier membership number.
You can redeem your miles on United Airlines plus Star Alliance partner airlines. You’ll start by earning United redeemable miles on the purchases you make with your United MileagePlus Club card. These miles will be transferred into your MileagePlus frequent flier account each month when your credit card statement closes. Once the miles are in your frequent flyer account, you can redeem them for flights on United and all of its partner airlines. The good news is that there are 26 partner airlines with which you can redeem your miles and 1,000 destinations. Some of these airlines include Lufthansa, Thai Airways, Singapore Airlines, Air Canada and Copa Airlines. Most of the partner award tickets can be booked on United.com. Last minute award ticket bookings, those within 21 days of departure, normally incur a $75 service charge for general members, but as a United MileagePlus Club cardholder, that fee is waived.
Your experiences with Hyatt, Hertz and Luxury Hotel & Resort Collection are about to change for the better with the elite status that comes with the Club card. As a World of Hyatt Discoverist elite, you’ll enjoy room upgrades, free internet, bonus points, late checkout and complimentary bottled water. Your lengthy list of hotel benefits continues with special privileges from the Luxury Hotel & Resort Collection, including complimentary breakfasts, check-in/checkout flexibility and room upgrades. For Hertz car rentals, you’ll receive upgrades, bonus points, expedited service and special promotions. Use your United MileagPlus Club card for booking your reservations to receive these benefits. Register for elite status with World of Hyatt and Hertz Gold Plus Rewards once your United MileagePlus Club card is approved. It can take up to four weeks to activate your membership. To receive benefits from the Luxury Hotel & Resort Collection, use your card when making reservations.
The United MileagePlus Club card and MileagePlus Business Club card are big on luxury travel benefits, while the United MileagePlus Explorer cards have sign-up bonuses that, once earned, are immediately redeemable for free travel. Grab those luxury travel benefits or choose to forego most of those perks for a more appealing 50,000 miles sign-up bonus; there’s a card for every United Airlines traveler in this lineup.

If United is your airline of choice, luxury travel benefits are important to you, and lounge access is a high priority, the United MileagePlus Club card or United MileagePlus Business Club card is a solid choice. The value of lounge access alone offsets the $450 annual fee and the MileagePlus Explorer cards don’t offer this benefit.
However, if luxury benefits are not a priority, you may prefer the more affordable $95 annual fee and bigger 60,000 miles sign-up bonus offered by either Explorer card. Both Explorer cards also come with two United Club lounge passes annually.
While the personal version of the Explorer card earns only one mile per dollar for most purchases, the business version offers some excellent bonus categories. You’ll get two miles per dollar at gas stations, restaurants and office supply stores. On the other hand, both versions of the Club card earn a solid 1.5 miles per dollar spent on all purchases. All United cards earn two miles per dollar spent with United.
Compare The United MileagePlus Explorer Card to Other Cards
The MileagePlus Explorer Card can be a great choice if you want to redeem miles for award flights on United. Except for the Capitol One Venture Rewards card, which is basically a cashback card, the cards below allow you to book award tickets. The Chase Sapphire Preferred also allows you to transfer points to multiple airlines to fit your award booking needs.
The biggest difference between the cards is the annual fee. That might discourage you from considering the United MileagePlus Club card. However, the other three cards come with far fewer travel benefits.
Big spenders may go for the British Airways Visa Signature that offers additional mileage earning on top of the sign-up bonus. You can earn a total bonus of 75,000 Avios if you spend $13,000 in the first year of having the card.
The Hawaiian Airlines MasterCard and the Alaska Airlines Visa Signature both offer companion ticket benefits that can easily offset their annual fees. You have to spend $30,000 on the British Airways Visa Signature to receive a companion ticket.
Bottom line: If luxury travel benefits are paramount and United Airlines is your airline of choice, the United MileagePlus Club card is a clear winner for you. If you travel globally and are a big spender, the British Airways Visa Signature will allow you to accumulate 120,000 Avios your first year (100,000 bonus plus 20,000 in spending). If you’re not that big of a spender, but want that discounted companion pass and a jumpstart on mileage accumulation, either the Hawaiian Airlines World Elite MasterCard or Alaska Airlines Visa Signature could serve you well.
