"Great for people looking for a luxury hotel experience"

The Ritz-Carlton credit card from Chase is an excellent card for those looking for luxury travel experiences. It has a diverse set of travel benefits and opens up elite status in three different hotel loyalty programs and with one airline. The card comes with the unique ability to earn top tier elite status via credit card spending without the requirement for any stays.

As a cardholder, you’ll get a well-rounded array of travel benefits, including an annual $300 travel credit, airport lounge access, expedited security program fee reimbursement, hotel room upgrades and more. Even the physical card itself, which is made of sturdy metal, has a very high-end feel compared to other credit cards.

The main negative of the card is its high annual fee of $450. With such a big fee it is important to ensure you are getting enough value out of the card to justify holding on to it in the long-term.

Bonuses and Benefits

Knowing what benefits come with a credit card can help you decide if it’s a good fit for you. Here we cover the bonuses and perks that the The Ritz-Carlton Rewards® Credit Card offers and the value of the Chase The Ritz-Carlton Rewards® points you earn.

Bonuses

The sign-up bonus is two complimentary nights in any Tier 1-4 Ritz-Carlton hotel after spending $4,000 in the first three months. In addition, you can earn 10,000 bonus points after you add an authorized user and make a purchase in the first 3 months.

The card also comes with a wide range of ongoing benefits. You can get up to $300 per year in statement credits toward qualifying travel purchases, such as baggage fees, seat upgrades, access to your preferred airport lounge and more. The credit is not automatic so you will need to call or send a secure message to request it after purchases post.

You will also receive a 10 percent Annual Points Premium on all new rewards points earned with your Ritz-Carlton card during a year. This effectively makes the earning rate 5 points per dollar for hotels; 2 points per dollar for airlines, restaurants and rental cars; and 1 points per dollar for all non-bonused spending.

The Ritz-Carlton card is issued as a Visa Infinite card. Unlike some other Infinite cards on the market, it comes with one of the best benefits, the airline ticket discount. You can save $100 an unlimted number of times when booking two to five qualifying round-trip, domestic coach airline tickets purchased on the same itinerary.

Cardholders can upgrade to the Ritz-Carlton Club level three times annually on paid stays of up to seven nights. This benefit can be hugely valuable if you often have paid stays at Ritz properties, especially for longer stays. In addition, you can receive a $100 hotel credit for things like dining, spa services or other hotel recreational activities on paid stays of two nights or longer.

What You Get

  • Earn 2 free nights after spending $4,000 within the first 3 months
  • Get an additional 10,000 points after adding an authorized user in the first 3  months
  • Annual $300 statement credit for travel expenses
  • The Annual Points Premium perk gives you a 10%  bonus for all points earned in a year
  • $100  discount for booking 2 to 5 round-trip economy tickets on the same itinerary
  • 3 upgrades to Ritz-Carlton Club level for stays of up to 7 days
  • $100 hotel credit for recreational activities and dining for stays of 2 nights or more
  • 5 points per dollar spent with Ritz-Carlton and SPG
  • 2 points per dollar for airfare, dining and car rentals

Ritz-Carlton points expire 24 months from the date of last activity. It is easy to keep your points alive in perpetuity with any sort of activity, such as spending on the credit card, transferring points from Chase Ultimate Rewards or redeeming or buying points.

What is the value of the The Ritz-Carlton Rewards® Points?

The great thing about Ritz-Carlton Rewards is that it’s really three reward programs in one. Ritz has a long standing relationship with Marriott, essentially operating one award program with points usable for bookings with either family of hotels. In addition, Marriott recently acquired Starwood and points can be freely transferred between the two programs at a ratio of one SPG point to three Marriott points. There are a ton of options available for award bookings.

What is CPP and How is it Calculated?

Cents Per Point (CPP) is a way to measure the value of points. It tells you how many cents you get for each point you redeem by dividing the cash price of the hotel room by the number of points of an equivalent award stay costs. This can be a somewhat subjective calculation because the price of the stay in both cash and points fluctuates by season and availability.

How we calculate CPP:

÷×100=
The final result:

The Best Ways to Redeem Sauthwest Points

Ritz-Carlton’s award chart has five tiers, with nightly rates running from 30,000 to 70,000 points. Points can also be used to stay at Marriott properties using a separate award chart which has nine tiers and ranges from 7,500 to 45,000 points per night. In order to determine the value you get from your points, simply divide the cash price of the room by the number of points required. One way to get extra value is to utilize Marriott’s redeem four nights and get a fifth night free feature, which could increase the value of your points by 25 percent for a five night stay.

Everyday Earnings

The Ritz-Carlton card doesn’t have much in the way of earning power for everyday spending. Most of the bonus categories are geared toward travel, earning five points per dollar at Ritz-Carlton and SPG properties and two points per dollar for airline tickets and car rentals. The one bonus for everyday spending is two points at restaurants. All other spending earns one point per dollar.

The ability to earn elite status via credit card spending is one of best benefits of the Ritz-Carlton card. With Ritz-Carltons’ and Marriott’s joint programs, along with the reciprocal status offered due to the acquisition of SPG, you can actually earn top tier status in not just one, but all three programs using this card. SPG Platinum status includes benefits such as free breakfast, 50 percent bonus points and upgrades to the best available room at check-in. Platinum status with Marriott offers similar benefits, plus a crossover benefit that gives you Silver status with United Airlines.

  • Complimentary Gold Elite status with Ritz-Carlton for the first year
  • Maintain Gold status every year you spend at least $10,000
  • Earn Platinum Elite status if you spend $75,000 more

Fees: the cost of Having the Card

The amount of spending required to cover the annual fee for this card depends on how well you will be able to utilize the benefits. For example, if you can use the entire $300 annual travel credit, then the annual fee is effectively reduced from $450 to $150.

The sign-up bonus of two free nights can easily cover the annual fee for the first year. Ritz-Carlton has some very luxurious and expensive properties that run over $500 per night, which means the sign-up bonus can be worth over $1,000. Rates vary significantly from property to property, so it’s worth searching around for hotels that offer the best value.

The Sapphire Preferred and Sapphire Reserve cards both have a 50,000-point sign-up bonus. These points can be transferred to a variety of airline and hotel partners. This flexibility increases their value for many travelers.

However, if you are specifically looking to redeem points at Ritz-Carlton properties, the sign-up bonus offered by the Ritz-Carlton card is clearly superior. For example, 50,000 points is only enough for one night at a Tier 3 Ritz-Carlton hotel. On the other hand, if you want redeem points for airfare, 50,000 points is enough for two round-trip economy class tickets, which could add up to a significant amount of value on many routes.

Compare Ritz-Carlton Rewards® Credit Card to Other Cards

Since you can use points from Ritz-Carlton, Marriott and SPG to book award nights at any of their properties, there are many cards available to accrue points via sign-up bonuses. Another hotel chain which has a credit card issued by Chase is Hyatt.

The sign-up bonuses for the Hyatt and Ritz-Carlton cards have similar structures, with each offering two free nights instead of points. The SPG card offers a 25,000 point sign-up bonus, which could be converted to 75,000 Ritz/Marriott points. The Marriott card offers 80,000 points which may be more useful for those looking to redeem points at lower end properties for more than two nights. The Ritz-Carlton card has by far the highest annual fee but also the best set of benefits.
