Spark® Miles Business Credit Card
Capital One is known for having several great travel credit cards for consumers, but don’t forget they have great small business cards, too. The Spark Miles for Business, like other Capital One cards, earns miles on every purchase, and the rewards you earn can be used with any airline, hotel or car rental agency.
These no-hassle credit cards are popular due to their easy-to-use rewards and competitive earnings rates. With the Spark Miles business card, you‘ll earn two miles per dollar on every purchase, every day. Combine that with a great 50,000 miles sign-up bonus and no annual fee the first year, and you’ve got a winning card.
Too good to be true? Not exactly, but the value of your miles only goes so far. All the miles you earn are worth a fixed amount when redeemed for travel, so you can’t stretch their value like you can with other rewards and loyalty programs. We’ll dive more into that as well as the rest of the benefits of the Spark Miles card in this review.
Bonuses and Benefits
Knowing what benefits come with a credit card can help you decide if it’s a good fit for you. Here we cover the bonuses and perks that the Spark® Miles Business Credit Card offers and the value of the Capital One Venture® Rewards miles you earn.
Once your new card arrives in the mail, you can earn 50,000 bonus miles after spending $4,500 within the first 90 days. This bonus is worth $500 in travel and is a great way to starting building your rewards balance fast!
Keep in mind that this card does not offer an annual spend bonus or anniversary bonus, so after you get your sign-up offer, you have to continue to use the card for all your business expenses if you want to increase your rewards for your next business trip or vacation.
What You Get
- Earn 50,000 miles after spending $4,500 within the first 3 months
- Double miles for all purchases
Unlike some loyalty programs, you don’t have to worry about your Spark miles expiring. As long as your account stays open and in good standing, your miles won’t expire. However, if you cancel your card, you’ll forfeit any unredeemed miles. But with so many redemption options (like toward tolls on a road trip or train tickets through Europe), you shouldn’t have any trouble finding ways to use your miles.
What is the value of the Venture® Rewards Miles?
With traditional airline loyalty programs, the value of miles can vary amongst airlines, routes, cabin classes and other factors. It can be confusing to keep up with all the rules and variations, especially since they change so often.
With Spark miles, your rewards have the same value across the board. It doesn’t matter if you use miles for the family’s annual trip to Florida or your second honeymoon to South America. The 50,000 miles sign-up bonus is worth the same no matter what you do with it. You’ll get $500 off a two-week car rental, $500 off a swanky hotel in Las Vegas or $500 off business class airfare to Hong Kong.
What is CPM and How Is It Calculated?
Cents Per Mile (CPM) is a way to measure the value of miles or points. It tells you how many cents you get for each mile or point you redeem by dividing the cash price of the airline ticket by the number of miles or points the award flight costs. That amount is multiplied by the number of miles or points earned per dollar spent on everyday purchases to account for cards that earn more than one mile per dollar spent.
How we calculate CPM:
The Best Ways to Redeem Venture® Rewards Miles
Miles are easy to earn and redeem with the Spark business card. As a cashback-style rewards program, you earn double miles on every purchase, and each mile is worth $0.01. As an example, 10,000 Venture miles are worth $100, and your rewards are worth the same regardless of how you use them. Since those 10,000 miles are good for $100 worth of flights, hotels, cruises, times shares, car rentals and more, the best way to redeem miles is to use them based on your own travel preferences.

Other ways you can redeem miles
Whether you prefer big hotel chains or small town B&Bs, you can use your Capital One rewards toward any accommodation you like.
Do you typically rent from the same car rental agency or just go with whoever is the least expensive? Whatever your preference, you can redeem miles for any type of car with any car rental company.
Through Capital One’s website, you have the ability to redeem rewards for gift cards, but you’ll be doing so at a lesser rate than if you redeem your miles toward travel.
While you can redeem for cash back, you’ll get a higher value for your miles by redeeming for travel instead. If a statement credit is what you’re looking for, make your next travel purchase on the Spark card and redeem your rewards as a statement credit toward that purchase.
The best part about the Spark Miles credit card is the great return you get when using the card. Each and every purchase you make earns double miles, so you don’t have to juggle multiple cards to make sure you’re earning enough rewards. Have travel expenses for your business? You’ll earn double miles. Need office supplies? You’ll earn double miles there, too. Taking a client out to dinner? Double miles on these purchases as well.

- All Other Purchases
Since you earn double miles on every transaction, you don’t have to worry if your purchase will earn enough miles. Simply use your Spark card for every purchase, and you’ll always earn double miles. No category bonuses to remember, and no hassles to worry about.
No Foreign Transaction Fee
Using your card outside the United States won’t incur any extra fees.
Auto Rental Collision Damage Waiver
Travel with peace of mind knowing your car rental is protected against damage or theft.
Travel and Emergency Assistance
If you’re traveling on business, this card will assist with emergency services, like medical and legal referrals, any time day or not. Third party charges do apply.
Earn Elite Status Fast
Although your Capital One mileage balance will add up fast, any spend you put on this card won’t help you earn elite status since your rewards aren’t tied to any one specific airline or hotel chain.
Fees: the cost of Having the Card
Another great benefit to this credit card is that the annual fee is waived the first year. After that, there’s a fee of just $95 each year, which is low compared to similar double-mile cards. In order to cover the annual fee, you’ll need to spend about $3,000 annually to earn rewards to offset the cost. That works out to only $250 per month. Alternatively, if you spend about $1,500 each month, you’ll have paid off the card in just two months.
Another way to consider the annual fee is in the context of the sign-up bonus’s value. The 50,000 bonus points are worth $500 right off the bat. That’s worth about 9.5 years of annual fees (since the first year is waived), which is an incredible value.

Unlike some banks, Capital One limits the number of cards you can have with them at one time. That limit is five. It doesn’t matter if the cards are personal or business cards or which rewards program they belong to, Capital One will only approve up to five cards for one person at any time. If you’re interested in the Spark Miles card but already have five others with Capital One, you’ll need to close one of your card accounts before being approved for the Spark.
- Can I combine the Spark Miles I earn with the business card with Venture Miles from my personal credit card?Definitely. Spark Miles from your business can be combined with Venture Miles from your personal credit card giving you even more flexibility. If you have other Capital One cards, however, they may not be eligible to combine rewards. As always, certain terms and conditions apply.
- You bet, and that’s one advantage of using Spark Miles over traditional airline miles or hotel points. Because you’re buying a revenue airline ticket or hotel room, you’ll still earn miles with your respective airline or hotel chain. And any elite status you have will continue to be recognized.Keep in mind that while you can redeem miles for purchases made through online travel agencies (OTAs), purchasing through those websites usually means your hotel status will not be recognized (because you’re getting a specially discounted rate). If you book directly with your hotel, you shouldn’t run into that problem.
Spark Miles can be redeemed in any quantity at any time. After you make your travel purchase and the transaction posts to your account, you can either call or log into your Capital One account and navigate to the Purchase Eraser. With this tool, you can redeem as many reward points as you wish toward your travel purchase. You can wipe out your entire hotel stay or choose to redeem part of your reward balance and save your remaining points toward a future redemption.
Compare the Spark Miles Cards to Other Cards
Capital One offers two Spark Miles credit cards for small businesses. Both earn unlimited rewards that can be redeemed toward travel. Here’s a table comparing the two cards.
|Spark® Miles Select Business Credit Card|
|20,000 miles||50,000 miles|
|$0||$0 first year, then $95|
APR On Purchases
|13.99% to 21.99% Variable±||17.99% Variable±|
Second Year Value
There are differences between these two offerings. For starters, the sign-up bonus on the Spark Miles Select is 20,000 miles compared to the standard Spark Miles’ 50,000 miles. Next, the Spark Select only earns miles at a rate of 1.5X, while the Spark earns 2X. That can really add up over time.
One benefit the Select card has that’s not found on the regular Spark card is the nine-month introductory 0% APR. That means you won’t incur any interest charges for the first nine billing cycles, even if you don’t pay off your card in full.
Lastly, the Spark Select doesn’t have an annual fee. While that could be advantage for some businesses (perhaps ones that are just starting out), the regular Spark Miles card earns miles at a higher rate. Long term, the Spark Miles could earn you more rewards if you spend enough on the card to compensate for the annual fee.
Compare Venture® Rewards Credit Card to Other Cards
Even if you’re pretty sure that the Spark Select is a good choice for you, you should take a quick look at these other business credit cards and consider whether they might be a better choice.
These cards have more differences than similarities. For starters, the Spark card’s rewards can be used for almost any type of travel, while the other cards offer a different type of redemption flexibility. The Amex Business Rewards Gold card and Chase Ink Plus give you the ability to redeem points toward travel or transfer to certain hotel and airline partners through the Membership Rewards and Ultimate Rewards programs, respectively.
The Amex Starwood Preferred Guest (SPG) card is also different. The points you earn here can be used for free nights at any SPG property, but SPG points can also be transferred to a long list of airlines. Plus, if you transfer 20,000 SPG points to any airline, you’ll get a 5,000 points bonus courtesy of SPG (which is a tremendous benefit).
While the SPG card has the lowest sign-up bonus, its rewards points are among the most valuable out there in part because of how flexible they are. Don’t forget that SPG and Marriott are merging, so you have the added benefit of converting SPG points to Marriott Rewards (or vice versa) to redeem SPG points toward Marriott hotels.
Another difference is that the Spark card has the edge after the first year with the lowest annual fee of this group. Meanwhile, the SPG and Ink Plus cards cost $95 per year. Lastly, the Amex Business Gold card has the highest annual fee of $175.
If you desire to stay in high-end hotels or fly in premium cabins, you can really stretch the value of your points with Membership Rewards, Ultimate Rewards and SPG points. Conversely, Spark Miles are worth the same fixed rate of one cent each no matter how you redeem them. Depending on your travel goals, this may or not matter to you.
Whenever you apply for a credit card make sure you read the terms and conditions of the card and the rewards program to find out about minimum spend requirements and any restrictions to ensure you can successfully obtain the card and earn the rewards it offers.
