"Good for people who are regular on cruises"

The Royal Caribbean Visa Signature is a solid no-fee rewards card for anyone who regularly vacations with Royal Caribbean or its sister brands, Celebrity Cruises and Azamara Club Cruises. With the card, you can earn a 10,000-point sign-up bonus after making your first purchase. You’ll also have the chance to earn a $50 discount if you spend $3,500 within 90 days of becoming a card member.

As far as everyday rewards go, don’t expect much. You’ll earn one point per dollar spent on most purchases, but you will get a bonus point, for a total of two points per dollar, with Royal Caribbean, Celebrity and Azamara.

Points are relatively straightforward to redeem, and you should get between one and two cents per point, which is a decent value. Unfortunately, points expire after five years no matter what activity you have on your account. If you don’t cruise at least once every five years, this card may not be the best option for you. Really, this card only makes sense for those who cruise regularly with Royal Caribbean, and specifically if you’re looking to cash in on the sign-up bonus.

Bonuses and Benefits

Knowing what benefits come with a credit card can help you decide if it’s a good fit for you. Here we cover the bonuses and perks that the Royal Caribbean Visa Signature® Credit Card offers and the value of the Bank of America MyCruise® Rewards points you earn.

Bonuses

The Royal Caribbean Visa Signature card has a 10,000-point sign-up bonus after making your first purchase within 65 days of becoming a card member. This 10,000-point bonus is redeemable for $100 in onboard credit with Royal Caribbean. Additionally, if you make at least $3,500 in purchases within your first 90 days as a card member, you’ll receive a $50 discount for Royal Caribbean’s Air2Sea program.

What You Get

  • Earn 10,000 points after your first purchase within 65 days of account opening
  • $50 discount for the Air2Sea program after spending $3,500 in 90 days
  • 2 points per dollar with Royal Caribbean, Celebrity Cruises and Azamara Club Cruises

Royal Caribbean points expire 60 months after being earned if they are not used. This gives you five years from the time you earn points to use them.

Everyday Earnings

The Royal Caribbean Visa Signature card isn’t a great option for everyday earning. That’s because the only bonus earning category it offers is for purchases with Royal Caribbean and its sister brands, Celebrity Cruises and Azamara Club Cruises. For these purchases, you’ll earn two points per dollar spent. All other purchases will earn one point per dollar spent.

Top 5 Benefits of the Royal Caribbean Visa Signature® Credit Card

The Royal Caribbean Visa is a pretty niche credit card offering. If you’re not a semi-regular cruiser, you’re probably not going to get the most out of this card. Here are the top five benefits:

  1. No Annual Fee: You’ll never have to pay anything for this card. That means all the rewards you earn are essentially free.
  2. Sign-Up Bonus: You’ll earn 10,000 Royal Caribbean MyCruise Rewards points after making your first purchase within 65 days of becoming a card member. You can also earn a $50 discount with Royal Caribbean’s Air2Sea program after making at least $3,500 in card purchases within your first 90 days.
  3. No Foreign Transaction Fees: Rest easy when you use this card abroad because you won’t have to pay an extra 3 percent in the form of foreign transaction fees.
  4. Straight Forward Redemptions: Royal Caribbean has a very clear chart indicating how much different redemptions cost. Additionally, you can redeem on Royal Caribbean’s sister brands, Celebrity Cruises and Azamara Club Cruises.
  5. Visa Signature Benefits: When you use this card, you’ll get Visa Signature benefits, including lost luggage protection, common carrier travel accident insurance and more.

Conclusion

The Royal Caribbean Visa Signature isn’t a card that makes sense for just anybody. The only way you will get ongoing value out of this card is if you are a regular cruiser. You need to take at least one cruise with Royal Caribbean or its sister brands at least once every five years for it to make sense to keep this card. If you don’t fall into this category, you will lose points because they will expire.

If you’re not a regular cruiser, the main reason to get this card is for its sign-up bonus. If you have a cruise coming up and want a little bit extra in onboard credit, it could make sense to get this card for that reason. Since the Royal Caribbean credit card doesn’t have an annual fee, you can hold onto it and ramp up your use when you know you have a cruise coming up.

If either of the above applies to you, you should still keep in mind that there could be better credit card options that would give you more returns for your spending. If you find a regular cashback card that earns more rewards, you can always use the cash back you earn toward a cruise. Make sure you consider your spending patterns and whether or not the Royal Caribbean credit card is the best option available for you.

FAQs

Need more info? Check out our frequently asked questions. If you have other questions, please click on “Ask Now” below.

  • In order to redeem your points, go to Royal Caribbean website and enroll in online banking so you can access the rewards redemption portal. From there, you’ll be able to review your balance and redeem for rewards. Keep in mind, you need to redeem points at least seven days before your sailing date.
  • It depends on your sailing date, not your redemption date. Onboard credit and onboard merchandise redemptions will be applied around two weeks before your sail date. Onboard credit will be posted to your onboard account within 48 hours of your verified ship sailing. Discounts are applied around three months before the sailing date, before final payments are made. Make sure to indicate your booking information in your redemption so the process is not delayed.
  • There’s no limit to the number of points you can earn. You’ll always earn two points per dollar spent on eligible Royal Caribbean purchases and one point per dollar spent on all other purchases.
  • You’ll need good to excellent credit to get the Royal Caribbean Visa Signature card. Most applicants who are approved report having a score of 640 or higher. Keep in mind that your application will not be decided based on your credit score alone. Bank of America will complete a full evaluation before deciding whether or not to approve you for the card and what your credit limit will be.

  • MyCruise Rewards is Royal Caribbean’s rewards program. You’ll earn points from your credit card spending that can be redeemed toward cruise vacations, upgrades, onboard credit and merchandise. You can also redeem your points with Royal Caribbean’s sister brands, Celebrity Cruises and Azamara Club Cruises.

The Celebrity Cruises credit card is a slightly more premium cruise credit card option. In addition to the ability to earn and redeem points, it includes multiple discounts. Some discounts are available once, and others are available on an ongoing basis. With these increased benefits comes a higher annual fee of $69.

The Norwegian Cruise Line credit card is effectively the same as the Royal Caribbean card. However, points are earned in Norwegian’s reward program and can be redeemed for Norwegian cruises. Both cards also offer a 10,000-point sign-up bonus, which is redeemable for a $100 onboard credit with the respective cruise lines.

Compare Royal Caribbean Visa Signature Credit Card to Other Cards

It’s also worth comparing the Royal Caribbean credit card to other cruise line and travel rewards credit cards, including the Priceline Rewards Visa, Carnival World MasterCard and Holland America Line Rewards Visa.

The Carnival World Mastercard offers the same 10,000-point sign-up bonus as the Royal Caribbean card, and the Holland America and Priceline cards have smaller 5,000-point sign-up bonuses. The Carnival and Holland America cards are very similar to the Royal Caribbean card in that they don’t charge an annual fee and they offer two points per dollar spent on cruise purchases. All other purchases earn one point per dollar.

The Priceline Rewards Visa card is a little bit more flexible. It allows you to earn five points per dollar spent on eligible Priceline purchases, including cruises, airfare, hotels and more. You’ll also earn one point per dollar spent on other purchases with the Priceline card. Overall, the Priceline card allows a lot more flexibility and overall better earnings as long as you can find the cruises and other travel you want through Priceline.
