"If you vacation with Princess Cruises, you could get a sign-up bonus worth $50 towards your next cruise with this no-fee credit card."

The Princess Cruises Rewards Visa card offers a 10,000 points sign-up bonus, 2 points per dollar spent with Princess and 1 point per dollar for all other purchases. Best of all, there’s no annual fee.

While this card might be an okay choice for a frequent Princess customer, it’s not a very rewarding option for someone who only cruises occasionally. Even a frequent cruiser might find that there is a better card out there, especially considering that the Princess card doesn’t offer any special benefits while onboard the ship.

Bonuses and Benefits

Knowing what benefits come with a credit card can help you decide if it’s a good fit for you. Here we cover the bonuses and perks that the Princess Cruises® Rewards Visa® Card offers and the value of the Barclays Princess Rewards™ points you earn.

Bonuses

The Princess Cruises Rewards Visa card offers a 10,000 points sign-up bonus after making your first purchase on the card. While this isn’t a large sign-up bonus, it’s still nice to receive something from a no annual fee card.

What You Get

  • 10,000 points after making your first purchase
  • 2 points per dollar spent with Princess

Princess Rewards points expire within five years from the time the points were earned, provided that your credit card remains active and in good standing. If you close your Princess Rewards card, your points will expire.

What is the value of the Princess Rewards™ Points?

The value of Princess Rewards points varies depending on how you use them. When redeeming for onboard credit, points are worth one cent each. That 10,000 point sign-up bonus is therefore worth $100 . It is possible to get more than one cent per point in value by redeeming for free cruises, but you’ll need to rack up a lot of points before you can do that.

What is CPP and How is it Calculated?

Cents Per Point (CPP) is a way to measure the value of points. It tells you how many cents you get for each point you redeem by dividing the cash price by the number of points of an equivalent award costs. This can be a somewhat subjective calculation because the price in both cash and points fluctuates by season and availability.

How we calculate CPP:

The Best Ways to Redeem Princess Cruises Points

As mentioned previously, it is pretty simple to get at least one cent per point in value simply by redeeming for cruise discounts or onboard credit. It is possible to get quite a bit more value per point by redeeming for full cruises.

If you want a free cruise worth up to $3,000, you’ll need 150,000 points. That’ll give you up to two cents per point. A free cruise worth up to $4,000 costs 200,000 points, which will also get you up to two cents per point. The best potential value is a cruise worth up to $7,500 for 300,000 points, which will give you up to 2.5 cents per point. As long as you are getting at least one cent per point from your Princess Cruises Rewards points, you’re doing pretty well by this program.

Travel Benefits

The Princess Cruises credit card isn’t truly designed to be a travel credit card, so you’ll see that it isn’t packed full of travel benefits. Nevertheless, it does offer the following:

No Foreign Transaction Fee

You’ll never be charged additional fees for using the card while traveling abroad.

Top 5 Benefits of the Princess Cruises Rewards Visa

The Princess Cruises Rewards card is narrowly focused and designed for people who like cruising on Princess. Here are the top five benefits of the card:

  1. Hassle-Free Redemptions: Points can be used for free cruises, airfare, onboard credit, onboard merchandise and more.
  2. No Minimum Spend: You only need to make one purchase in order to earn the 10,000 points sign-up bonus.
  3. No Annual Fee: You’ll never have to pay anything for this card. That means all the rewards you earn are essentially free. How can you beat that?
  4. Earn Twice as Much on Princess: Earn 2 points per dollar spent on all of your purchases with Princess, including those made onboard.
  5. No Foreign Transaction Fees: You can take this card with you when you’re traveling internationally without being hit by the 3% fee charged by many cards.

Should You Get the Princess Cruises Rewards Visa?

Overall, the Princess Cruises credit card probably isn’t the best choice for many people. While it does offer a sign-up bonus, it isn’t that big. Plus, most purchases earn just one point per dollar spent, so it’ll be tough to rack up enough points for any meaningful redemptions. That said, it is a no annual fee card, so you won’t lose out on anything by getting it and only using it occasionally.

If you are a frequent Princess cruiser, the card becomes a better option. You’ll earn points a little faster since all Princess cruise purchases earn two points per dollar spent. Even though it is a better card for Princess cruisers, there are other cards out there that are at least as rewarding and offer more flexibility.

FAQs

Need more info? Check out our frequently asked questions. If you have other questions, please click on “Ask Now” below.

  • What kind of credit score do I need to get the Princess Cruises Rewards Visa?

Most successful applicants report having a credit score of 700 or higher. If your credit score is at least 700, it is not a guarantee that you will be approved for the card. Likewise, if your score is under 700 it isn’t a guarantee that you won’t be approved. Barclays will evaluate your entire application before approving or denying you for the card.
  • Will I become part of Princess Cruises’ Captain’s Circle with the Princess Cruises Rewards Visa?

Unfortunately, you won’t. The Princess Cruises Visa card will not help you earn elite status with Princess Cruises. You can become part of the Captain’s Circle after completing certain requirements. To become part of Captain’s Circle Gold level, you need to complete one Princess Cruise. Ruby Level requires 4 to 5 cruises, or 31 to 50 cruise days; Platinum Level requires 6 to 15 cruises, or 51 to 150 cruise days; and elite level is from your 16th cruise onward, or 151 or more cruise days.
  • Do I get priority boarding with the Princess Cruises Rewards Visa?

No, priority boarding is a benefit of being a Captain’s Circle elite status member and is not a benefit of the Princess Cruises Rewards Visa credit card.
  • I already booked my Princess cruise, can I still earn bonus points from the Princess Cruises credit card?

In order to earn bonus points from the credit card, you need to pay for the purchase with the card. Since you already booked your cruise, you won’t be able to earn the two points per dollar from your Princess Cruises credit card. Keep in mind that the Princess Cruises credit card also earns two points per dollar on purchases made onboard, so make sure to bring your card with you when you go on your cruise!

The Holland America Line Rewards Visa card also offers a 5,000 points sign-up bonus and no annual fee. The Carnival card offers a higher 10,000 points sign-up bonus and no annual fee.

Which card is right for you depends on which cruise line you typically use. If you have the Princess card, you won’t be able to use those points for cruises on other cruise lines. If you definitely want a cruise credit card, you should choose the credit card with the line you cruise most often.

Compare Princess Cruises Rewards Visa to Other Cards

Other banks offer credit cards from different cruise lines, including the Norwegian Cruise Line World MasterCard, the Royal Caribbean Visa Signature and the Celebrity Cruises Visa Signature.

All of these credit cards offer a 10,000 points sign-up bonus. You won’t pay an annual fee with either the Norwegian card or the Royal Caribbean card. The Celebrity Cruises credit card does have an annual fee of $69.

Again, which card is right for you depends on which cruise line you plan to cruise the most. If you always find yourself on Carnival Cruises, for example, you definitely should not get the Royal Caribbean card. You will not be able to use your Royal Caribbean points on Carnival cruises.
