Platinum Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card
The Platinum Delta SkyMiles credit card from American Express is a solid choice for Delta Air Lines customers. With a hefty 35,000 miles sign-up bonus, a fast track to elite status, an annual companion pass and a $100 statement credit after making a Delta purchase, the value you’ll get from this card more than offsets the $195 annual fee.
Add to those benefits the ability to earn an annual bonus for hitting spending requirements and the perks of priority boarding, free checked bags and discounted lounge access, and this card becomes a great choice for anyone who flies on Delta. While miles can only be redeemed for tickets on Delta and its partner airlines, you’ll be earning a large number of miles with this card and there are plenty of redemptions that offer good value.
Bonuses & Benefits of Delta Amex Cards
Knowing what benefits come with a credit card can help you decide if it’s a good fit for you. Here we cover the bonuses and perks that the Platinum Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card offers and the value of the AMEX SkyMiles® miles you earn.

Additionally, you’ll receive 5,000 Medallion Qualification Miles (MQMs) which will help you earn elite status in the SkyMiles frequent flyer program. A $100 statement credit will be applied to your account if you make a Delta purchase within that same four month period.
What You Get

What is the value of the SkyMiles® Miles?
Since Delta employs dynamic pricing for its award tickets instead of actually publishing an award chart, the cost of award tickets can vary greatly. However, there are still some sweet spots, such as discounted one-way domestic tickets for as little as 10,500 miles.
Low level award redemptions for premium business class international round-trip tickets can usually be found for 140,000 miles, but Delta occasionally has flash sales where those awards cost just 110,000 miles. Try looking for one-way flights between hubs where flights are plentiful to find the best value and availability.
What is CPM and How Is It Calculated?
Cents Per Mile (CPM) is a way to measure the value of miles. It tells you how many cents you get for each mile you redeem by dividing the cash price of the airline ticket (minus taxes and fees charged for an award ticket) by the number of miles the award flight costs. This is a somewhat subjective calculation because the price of the flight in both cash and miles fluctuates by season and availability.
How we calculate CPM:
The Best Ways to Redeem Skymiles Miles
Miles earned on your Platinum Delta SkyMiles card can be redeemed for a variety of awards, but the best value is realized on saver level award tickets. Since there is no award chart to use as a guideline, you’ll have to compare the cost in miles with the dollar cost of purchasing a ticket to determine if you’re receiving good value.
A good deal on any award ticket is when the value of redeeming your miles gets close to 1.5 CPM, though ideally it would exceed that. For instance, if a ticket costs $600 and you must redeem 60,000 miles for it, you’re only receiving one cent per mile in value. It may be better to just purchase the ticket with cash and save your miles. SkyMiles can also be redeemed for tickets with Sky Team Alliance member airlines.

Other ways you can redeem miles
Delta SkyClub Membership
An Executive SkyClub Membership, which includes lounge access for up to two guests, normally costs $745 per year, but you can redeem 70,000 miles for membership. An individual membership is $495 a year or 47,000 miles.
Pay With Miles
Cardholders have the unique option to pay for any ticket with miles. Find the best deal on Delta.com and redeem miles for credit towards the purchase of your paid ticket. 5,000 miles is worth $50 off your ticket, 10,000 miles equals $100 off, etc.
You can redeem your miles for hotels and for vacation packages. Select from a vast variety of hotel brands.
Certain itineraries will allow you to upgrade a cabin class by redeeming your miles.
Redeem your miles for rental cars. There’s even an option to combine a hotel and rental car for a discounted cost.
While Delta offers you the option of purchasing popular gift cards, such as Starbucks, Amazon, and Target, it is not good value for your miles. For instance, you must redeem 3,000 miles for a $10 Starbucks gift card.
Everyday Earnings with Platinum Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card
This card offers just one mile per dollar spent on everyday purchases, which is not going to add up quickly. There are better cards for everyday spending, some even offer two miles per dollar for all purchases. However, there are spending levels on the Platinum Delta SkyMiles card where additional miles are earned. The avid Delta traveler will probably want to spend at least $25,000 per year to waive the revenue requirements (MQDs) to qualify for Elite Status and capture an additional 10,000 miles and MQMs. At $50,000 spent in the first year, you will maximize your earnings on the card for a total of 70,000 bonus miles and 30,000 MQMs. It’s worth noting that you’ll get a total of 20,000 bonus miles and MQMs every year you spend at least $50,000 on the card.

That’s a total of 30,000 MQMs the first year you have the card, which is enough to qualify for Silver status. Spending $25,000 annually on your card also waives the MQD (revenue) requirement for attaining status.
Fees: the cost of Having Platinum Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card
The Platinum Delta SkyMiles card has an annual fee of $195 . At a value of 1.5 cents per mile, you’ll earn enough miles to cover the cost of the card once you’re spent $13,000. In the first year, however, you will receive a $100 statement credit after making your first purchase and a 35,000 miles sign-up bonus.
- This card’s annual fee is $195.
- If you make $13,000 in purchases a year, you’ll cover the cost of the card. That’s because you’ll earn at least 13,000 miles, and they’re worth at least 1.5 cents each. If you spend about $2,000 a month, you’ll pay off the card in 7 months.
The annual fee of $195 is not waived the first year. However, you’ll receive a sign-up bonus which more than offsets the annual fee.

You can redeem the miles earned on your Platinum Delta SkyMiles card for airline tickets, hotels and rental cars. However, the best value will be realized when redeeming miles for airline tickets on Delta and its SkyTeam alliance partners. There are 20 airlines that make up the SkyTeam, and they fly to over 1,052 destinations. Some route and fare class restrictions do apply, but you’ll have a lot of redemption options.
You’ll need to compare the cash price of a ticket you’re considering with its price in miles to determine if you’re getting a good deal. The closer you can get to redeeming your miles for 1.5 cents each, the better. In some cases, on international saver fares for example, you can do much better. You may get as much as four cents per mile.
All cardholders also have the option of paying with miles. The Pay with Miles program, a perk of being a Platinum Delta SkyMiles cardholder, allows you to find your best deal on Delta.com for a cash ticket and pay for all or part of that ticket with miles.
At each Platinum Delta SkyMiles card renewal you’ll receive a free companion certificate. Think of it as a buy one, get one free certificate. You purchase one ticket and pay only the taxes and fees on the second ticket.
Once the certificate is deposited into your Delta SkyMiles account, in the My Wallet section, you can access it and book the tickets. The certificate is good for one round-trip ticket on Delta, Delta Connection and Delta Shuttle flights within the lower 48 states.
The companion ticket does not earn miles, but the base ticket does. Also, the certificate is transferrable so family and friends can use it. Taxes and fees on the companion certificate cannot exceed $75, and you must pay using your Platinum Delta SkyMiles credit card.
Does the Platinum Delta SkyMIles credit card automatically give me elite status in Delta’s frequent flyer program?
While the Platinum Delta SkyMIles card does not automatically give you Medallion elite status in Delta’s frequent flier program, it does give you a jump start to status with 10,000 Medallion Qualifying Miles (MQMs) after your first purchase. You can earn 10,000 additional MQMs by spending a total of $25,000 on your credit card in a year and another 10,000 by spending $50,000. It takes 25,000 MQMs to earn Silver Medallion status.
While spending $50,000 to gain entry-level elite status seems like a lot, this card fares well for the Delta customer who is already building MQMs by flying Delta. The card perfectly supplements those flown miles, potentially boosting the level of elite status the flyer is able to obtain.

Other Delta Amex Cards
If you fly frequently on Delta Air Lines, you can’t go wrong with a Delta Amex card in your wallet. All of the SkyMiles cards earn two miles per dollar on Delta purchases and offer perks for you and your travel companions. Spending on any of these cards at the $25,000 annual level will waive the MQD revenue requirement needed to achieve any Medallion elite status level. If you’re planning on keeping a Delta SkyMiles card for the long haul, you’ll find advantages with the Platinum Delta SkyMiles credit card over the Gold Delta SkyMiles cards due to the extra benefits and earning potential.

Both of the Gold SkyMiles cards waive the annual fee the first year. However, if you opt for the Platinum Delta SkyMiles card, you’ll receive more than enough benefits to offset the greater $195 annual fee. The annual companion pass and the ability to earn bonus miles over and above the sign-up bonus are the biggest differences between the Platinum and Gold cards.
The Platinum Delta SkyMiles card has a better sign-up bonus at 35,000 versus 30,000 for the Gold card and is also the better choice for earning Elite Status with up to 30,000 MQMs. If you’re a Delta flyer who wants perks, doesn’t mind redeeming miles on only Delta and Sky Team Alliance airlines, and will be spending enough on the card to maximize the point bonuses, the Platinum Delta SkyMiles card can be very valuable.
The business versions of the Gold and Platinum cards offer all the same benefits as the personal cards, plus a few more perks designed specifically for business owners. You can add employee cards for no additional charge; you’ll get five percent off for purchases from specific partners; and you have access to Amex Open’s handy Receipt Match services for keeping track of your expenses.
Compare Platinum Delta SkyMiles to Other Cards
All of the cards compared here offer the option to earn points or miles and redeem them for travel. Both the Citi ThankYou Premier card and the Platinum card from American Express allow redemptions on any airline, while the Delta and Alaska cards limit redemptions to their respective airlines and their partners. But redemption options don’t tell the whole story; there are other perks to consider.
If you’re a frequent traveler and enjoy luxury travel, the Amex Platinum card is worth your consideration. It offers lounge access, free Uber rides, Global Entry reimbursement, credits for airline fees, luxury hotel perks, hotel elite status, Boingo Wi-Fi access and more. The fee is a hefty $550 and although it has a nice 60,000 point sign-up bonus, you’ll need to spend $5,000 in the first three months to get it. You do earn 5 points per dollar spent on travel.
The card can be good for Delta travelers as it does come with Delta Sky Club access and the ability to transfer Membership Rewards points to Delta. However, the Delta flyer who wants to earn top elite status would fare better with the Platinum Delta SkyMiles card, which earns MQMs, bonus miles, has a smaller annual fee and offers discounted Sky Club access.
Another good card for travelers is the Citi ThankYou Premier card. It offers three points per dollar on travel purchases and a 25 percent bonus for redemptions. Since the annual fee is waived the first year and you receive 30,000 ThankYou points as a sign-up bonus, it’s an all around good card for a traveler.
The least desirable card on this list is the Alaska Airlines Visa Platinum Plus with only a 5,000 miles sign- up bonus and a $50 fee. You do receive that $50 back towards an Alaskan Airlines ticket, but the card’s perks are minimal compared to the others on this list.
The strongest case for the avid Delta customer is made for holding the Platinum Delta SkyMiles card due to its great travel perks, the ability to earn loads of SkyMiles and elite qualifying miles, its free companion ticket and the big sign-up bonus.
Whenever you apply for a credit card make sure you read the terms and conditions of the card and the rewards program to find out about minimum spend requirements and any restrictions to ensure you can successfully obtain the card and earn the rewards it offers.
