"A free annual companion pass and the ability to earn elite qualifying miles makes this Delta business card a standout."

American Express offers a nice suite of credit cards aimed at travelers who fly with Delta. One of these cards is geared toward business owners, the Platinum Delta SkyMiles Business card. It offers all of the great benefits of the Delta SkyMiles personal card.

Highlights of this card include a nice sign-up bonus that includes Medallion Qualification Miles and the ability to earn SkyMiles on every purchase. After your first year of card membership, you’ll also be eligible to earn a companion certificate that’s good for a free companion fare on any domestic round-trip coach ticket.

While Delta is regarded as one of the best domestic U.S. carriers in terms of quality and performance, its SkyMiles loyalty program is less valuable than it once was. We’ll examine this along with all the features and benefits of this Delta business card.

Bonuses and Benefits

Knowing what benefits come with a credit card can help you decide if it’s a good fit for you. Here we cover the bonuses and perks that the Platinum Delta SkyMiles® Business Credit Card offers and the value of the AMEX SkyMiles® miles you earn.

Bonuses

To help pad your SkyMiles account balance, you can earn 35,000 bonus miles after spending $1,000 on your Delta business card within three months of being approved. Additionally, you’ll get a $100 statement credit if you make a purchase of any size with Delta within the same timeframe.

While there are no additional bonuses for adding authorized users, you can earn extra Medallion Qualification Miles (MQMs) and redeemable miles if you spend a good amount on the card. Each calendar year that you spend $25,000 on the card, you’ll earn an extra 10,000 miles and MQMs. Further, if you spend $50,000 on the card, you’ll earn an additional 10,000 miles and MQMs. That can really help you reach Medallion status quickly!

What You Get

  • 35,000 redeemable miles and 5,000 MQMs after spending $1,000 within the first 3 months
  • $100 statement credit after making any Delta purchase within 3 months
  • 10,000 redeemable miles and MQMs after spending $25,000 in a year
  • 10,000 more miles and MQMs if you spend $50,000 in a year, for a total of 20,000 miles and MQMs
  • Free checked bag, priority boarding and in-flight discounts with Delta
  • 2 miles per dollar spent with Delta

One great feature of Delta SkyMiles is that your miles don’t ever expire. Whether you’re a card member, a frequent flyer or just the occasional Delta traveler, any miles you accumulate in your SkyMiles account will not expire. This is a huge benefit compared to most airline and hotel loyalty programs.

What is the value of the SkyMiles® Miles?

The major issue with the SkyMiles program is that Delta no longer publishes award charts, so you never know for certain how much an award should cost. Unlike many other carriers, the number of miles you need for a free Delta or partner airline flight is a mystery. This means you can’t save up a certain number of miles and know you can get a free domestic or international ticket. As a result, it’s hard to quantify the value of SkyMiles as the price of any award ticket can vary.

Before Delta did away with award charts, they introduced five tiers of awards for coach and first class/Delta One on flights they operated. These tiers have seemingly stayed intact, so a domestic one-way coach ticket could cost as few as 5,000 miles or as much as 37,500 miles (or more).

Sure, the distance between your origin and destination plays a role in the award cost, but it’s not a guarantee. And while Delta hasn’t confirmed this, it’s generally believed that the cost of an award ticket will soon mirror the cost of a paid ticket. That would mean that Delta miles would be worth about a penny each.

All of that aside, saver level availability still exists, and Delta runs award sales from time to time. International flights, though expensive in miles, can still yield decent returns.

What is CPM and How Is It Calculated?

Cents Per Mile (CPM) is a way to measure the value of miles. It tells you how many cents you get for each mile you redeem by dividing the cash price of the airline ticket (minus taxes and fees charged for an award ticket) by the number of miles the award flight costs. This is a somewhat subjective calculation because the price of the flight in both cash and miles fluctuates by season and availability.

The Best Ways to Redeem Delta Miles

Technically, SkyMiles is still a region-based rewards program. For the most part, traveling between different regions costs more miles than within the same region, and flying between closer regions is less than distant regions. But since there are no award charts to go by, this is not an absolute rule.

More and more, Delta awards are costing more, and it’s widely believed Delta will eventually switch to a revenue-based redemption system much like you find with JetBlue and Southwest. For regular flying, Delta already awards miles based on the price you pay for your ticket.

Other ways you can redeem miles

Hotel Stays

22 partners22 part.

In addition to flights, you can redeem miles through Delta.com toward hotel rooms, generally valued at one cent per mile in value.

Car Rental

9 partners9 part.

Need a car once you get to your destination? You can also redeem SkyMiles toward car rentals right around one cent in value.

Gift Cards

34 partners34 part.

Delta also offers many gift cards with popular retailers, but typically you’re getting much less than one cent per point for these redemptions.

Cash Back

You cannot redeem SkyMiles for cash back. However, one benefit available to all American Express Delta cardholders is the ability to Pay with Miles. When purchasing a revenue ticket, you can redeem for discounts off your airfare in 10,000 miles increments (10,000 miles are equal $100 off). However, if your ticket costs $175, you won’t be able to redeem that exact number of miles and instead would need 20,000 miles to cover the entire cost. This translates to less than 1 CPM, but it is an option.

Everyday Earnings

With your Platinum Delta SkyMiles Business card, you’ll earn two miles per dollar for delta purchases and one mile for everything else. You won’t earn bonus miles for groceries, gas or dining out like you can with some travel cards. But don’t forget, if your business spends $25,000 or $50,000 in a calendar year, you’ll earn an extra 10,000 or 20,000 redeemable miles, plus 10,000 or 20,000 MQMs that count toward elite status.

Travel Benefits

Free Checked Bag

The business cardholder and up to nine companions on the same reservation can get their first checked bag for free. If you travel a lot on business, this can really add up.

Companion Pass

Beginning in your second year of card membeship and every year after, you can earn one companion pass good for a free domestic coach ticket. All you have to pay for are the taxes and fees!

Lounge Access

While access to Delta Sky Clubs is not complimentary with this card, you are eligible for a discounted entrance fee of $29 for you and two companions.

Priority Boarding

Card members and their companions on the same reservation (up to nine people) are entitled to receive Zone 1 Priority Boarding on all Delta flights.

In-Flight Savings

You can get a 20% discount on food, alcohol and audio headsets on any Delta flight.

No Foreign Transaction Fee

You’ll never pay a foreign transaction fee anywhere Delta or its partners fly.

ic_elite_statusCreated with Sketch.Earn Elite Status Fast

Another spectacular benefit of the Platinum Delta Business card is the ability to fast-track to elite status. As part of your sign-up bonus, you’ll earn 5,000 Medallion Qualifying Miles (MQMs) toward your next status level.

Plus, you can earn extra MQMs every calendar year you spend $25,000 or $50,000 on the card. With that level of spending, you’ll earn an extra 10,000 or 20,000 MQMs (in addition to all your extra standard and bonus miles) to help you get Silver, Gold, Platinum or Diamond status quicker.

Best of all, if you earn MQMs with this card (or through flying) that don’t quite qualify you for the next status level, they’ll roll over to jump start qualification for next year. This is an unparalleled perk, but you have to obtain at least Silver status for any MQMs to carry over.

  • The sign-up bonus includes 5,000 MQMs that count toward elite status
  • Earn another 10,000 MQMs if you spend $25,000 in a year
  • Get a total of 20,000 MQMs if you spend $50,000 in a year

Fees: the cost of Having the Card

The annual fee for all these benefits is $195, but it can easily be offset by all the miles you will earn. We estimate SkyMiles to be worth 1.5 cents each. So, you would need to spend $13,000 per year to cover the annual fee. If you spend $2,000 per month, you’ll have covered the annual fee in about 7.0 months. Or, if you think about breaking up that cost over the course of a year, you would need to spend about $1,084 per month to accomplish the same goal.

Another way to look at the annual fee is in the context of the sign-up bonus. The 35,000 miles bonus is worth $525, based on our estimate, so that would cover the annual fee for just over 2.5 years. Not too bad.

But don’t forget, the card also comes with terrific savings when it comes to checked bags and the annual companion certificate. If you and a companion each checked a bag on every flight, your savings after just two roundtrips would cover the annual fee. Even better, if you can cash in the free companion certificate that you’ll earn annually starting in year two, that can pay for the card on its own, assuming your fare is at least $195. Amazing!

Top 5 Benefits of the Platinum Delta SkyMiles Business Card

This Platinum Delta Business card has many great benefits, and it’s hard to pick the ones that stand out the most. Certainly the sign-up bonus, the ability to earn MQMs and the annual companion certificate are up there. Let’s look at the top five benefits of this credit card.

  1. Great Sign-Up Bonus: This card comes with a nice sign-up bonus of 35,000 redeemable miles along with 5,000 MQMs after spending $1,000 within the first three months. You can also earn a $100 statement credit if you make a single Delta purchase in that same timeframe. That’s a great deal!
  2. Earn MQMs Toward Status: Not only do you earn MQMs with your sign-up bonus, but you can earn up to 20,000 additional MQMs on the card every year by spending up to $50,000 on the card. An amazingly unique benefit.
  3. Free Companion Pass: Want to take a family member, friend or colleague on a trip with you? With the annual companion pass that you get starting in the second year, bring someone with you for free on a domestic round-trip flight. All you have to pay are their taxes and fees.
  4. Free Checked Bags: Delta charges $25 per person to check the first bag, but you and nine companions can get this fee waived as long as you’re booked on the same reservation.
  5. Earn Delta SkyMiles on Every Purchase: Get double miles with Delta and one mile per dollar for all other purchases.

Should You Get the Platinum Delta SkyMiles Business Credit Card?

As you can see, this Delta card is stacked with great benefits that couple well with the SkyMiles program, even if it’s not the best airline loyalty program around. If you travel on Delta often for business, you can rack up even more miles using this card, and depending on your level of travel and spending, the added MQMs may just help you reach your next status level faster.

The savings you get with the checked bag fee waivers and annual companion pass can add up very fast, and just these two benefits alone can save you hundreds of dollars, making that annual fee worth the cost! Even if you’re not a heavy road warrior, the benefits from this card can save you a nice chunk of change.

Our opinion is that the $195 annual expense is well worth it. But when trying to decide if this is the best business card for you, consider how much travel you do and how often you fly with Delta. If the numbers don’t add up, this may not be the best choice. But most occasional Delta flyers will find this card a nice one to keep long term.

FAQs

Need more info? Check out our frequently asked questions. If you have other questions, please click on “Ask Now” below.

  • Yes, you can. While the benefits on both cards are nearly identical, American Express does allow you to have multiple Delta credit cards. Why might you want to do this? If you’re a big spender, you could earn even more MQMs by having both versions of the card, plus you’d earn two companion certificates each year!
Unfortunately, the free bag perk does not stack, so you won’t be eligible for two free bags if you have two Delta cards. Just keep in mind you’ll have to pay the $195 annual fee twice by having both versions.
  • Many people get the Platinum Delta Amex confused with the Amex Platinum card, but they are two separate products. There are numerous differences between these cards, so you could have both. And if you’re a Delta loyalist, it may make sense to have both cards in your wallet.
  • Unlike other premium credit cards, the Business Delta Platinum card does not get free lounge access. However, you can get into Delta lounges at a discounted rate. Normally, entrance to Sky Clubs costs $59 per person, but with this card, you can save $30 per person (for yourself and up to two companions). Depending on how much time you have before your flight, access to a comfy seat, free Wi-Fi and complimentary snacks and beverages could be well worth the expense.
  • Sadly, no. The priority boarding and free baggage are limited to the primary cardholder unless he or she books themselves and other travelers on a single reservation. Again, the primary cardholder must be traveling to take advantage of these benefits.
  • If you’re thinking of adding multiple Delta cards to your collection, you can. While there isn’t a limit to the number of Delta cards you can hold at one time, American Express generally limits you to four credit card accounts, regardless of which product you have.
  • One nice perk of this airline card is that you’re not required to use it when making your booking to be eligible for free checked bags and priority boarding. As long as your SkyMiles number is attached to your reservation, your status as a cardholder will be recognized.
If, however, you are crediting your miles to another carrier’s program, you’ll forego these benefits. And, if you book travel for your employee and they, too, are a Delta cardholder, they will receive these benefits as well.
  • One feature that comes with most Amex business credit cards is their OPEN partnership discounts. With the Delta Business Platinum card, you can get an automatic 5 percent discount with select merchants that are part of the OPEN network. You must use your Delta Platinum business card to be eligible, and the discount shows up on a later statement as a credit. More details are available on American Express’ website.

The most basic and obvious difference amongst these cards is the annual fee. This is intentional as each card is targeted for a different type of business client. Further, only the Gold card waives the annual fee for the first year.

Out of this group, the Platinum version offers the highest sign-up bonus, but the Reserve offers the ability to earn the most MQMs through annual spending. Meanwhile, the Gold card awards no MQMs. Also, the Platinum and Reserve versions offer annual companion certificates, while the Gold does not. But the Reserve’s certificate can be used domestic first class tickets.

Lastly, only the Reserve card offers complimentary access to Sky Clubs for the primary cardholder. Like the other Delta cards, companions will have to pay the discounted $29 admission price.

As you can see, all three Delta business credit cards function similarly. You should choose the card that’s best for your business and pay an annual fee that’s based on your needs.

Compare the Platinum Delta SkyMiles Business Card to Other Cards

If you’re shopping for an airline business credit card, you’re probably wondering how the Delta card compares to ones offered by the competition. While all of these cards earn miles on their respective carriers and offer priority boarding and free bags, they are more different than similar.

35,000miles offer
Platinum Delta SkyMiles® Business Credit Card

Check if Platinum Delta SkyMiles® Business Credit Card is the best option for you

Both the CitiBusiness American Airlines card and United business card have annual fees waived for the first year. That’s a big advantage compared to the others in our chart. When it comes to normal spending, only the AA card offers double miles in select business categories, while the remaining cards earn double miles only on purchases with their respective co-branded airlines. Plus, only Delta’s card can help you earn elite status.

The sign-up bonuses also vary quite a bit, with the United card leading the pack and the Asiana card having the smallest welcome bonus.

In terms of annual benefits, the Delta card offers a companion certificate, the United card awards two free passes to United Clubs and the Asiana card offers statement credits if you book Asiana flights originating in the U.S. The standout, however, is the business AA card that offers a $99 companion discount certificate (if you spend $30,000 in a year) and is eligible for discounted award pricing with Reduced Mileage Awards on American-operated flights.

As you can see, all these cards offer different benefits, so it really boils down to which airline’s benefits you will use. Further, if you’re loyal to one particular airline for business travel, it’s probably best to get that airline’s business card.
