For excellent/good credit

"This no-fee card offers a solid sign-up bonus and decent earning potential to frequent Norwegian Cruise Line customers."

Co-branded cruise credit cards are generally nothing to get excited about. The Norwegian World MasterCard, however, is a step above the rest, offering better earning potential with three points for every dollar spent with Norwegian. Most cruise cards offer only two points per dollar.

There’s also a 10,000 points sign-up bonus and no annual fee on the card. That means that you’ll be $100 ahead after your first purchase. You can use those points for onboard credits for your next cruise.

Unfortunately, you’ll need to be a frequent cruiser on Norwegian to gain any ongoing benefit. If you’re not, you should consider a travel credit card with a larger sign-up bonus, similar earning and more flexible redemption options.

Bonuses and Benefits

Knowing what benefits come with a credit card can help you decide if it’s a good fit for you. Here we cover the bonuses and perks that the Norwegian Cruise Line® World Mastercard® offers and the value of the Bank of America WorldPoints® Rewards points you earn.

Bonuses

You’ll receive a nice sign-up bonus of 10,000 WorldPoints after your first purchase on the card. Your earnings will continue with three points earned for every dollar you spend on Norwegian Cruise Lines and one point per dollar for all other purchases. You’ll have plenty of time to accumulate points toward a free cruise or for onboard credits without ever worrying about paying an annual fee. You’ll also have the flexibility to redeem points for flights, hotels or rental cars.

What You Get

  • Earn 10,000 points after making your first purchase within 3 months of getting the card
  • 3 points per dollar spent with Norwegian
  • No annual fee

Since WorldPoints expire five years after the month they were earned regardless of activity on your account, you’ll want to plan to utilize your points within that time frame.

The Best Ways to Redeem Norwegian Points

The Norwegian Cruise Line World MasterCard earns WorldPoints which can be used for a wide variety of travel purchases, in addition to cruises and onboard amenities. If you cruise regularly, you’ll find fair value when redeeming your points for onboard credits at one cent per point. Points are also redeemable for airfare at the same rate.

A better redemption that could potentially yield more value per point is to get a free cruise for two persons to the Bahamas for 60,000 points. Another option is to purchase a ticket for a third person in your stateroom for 40,000 points.

Other ways you can redeem points

Hotel Stays

Redeem your points for a variety of hotels via the WorldPoints Reward center. The number of points needed will be determined at the time of redemption.

Car Rental

You can also redeem points for car rentals via the WorldPoints Reward center. The number of points needed will be determined at the time of redemption.

Gift Cards

WorldPoints can also be used for gift cards from various merchants.

Cash Back

You can redeem your WorldPoints for cash rewards.

Everyday Earnings

The Norwegian Cruise Line World MasterCard, like other co-branded cruise line credit cards, offers limited earning potential on everyday spending. Norwegian purchases, including cruise fares, earn three points per dollar, but all other purchases earn just one point per dollar.

Top 5 Benefits of the Norwegian Cruise Line World MasterCard

With a generous sign-up bonus, good earning potential and a variety of travel redemption options that include free cruises and airfare, the Norwegian Cruise Line World MasterCard has a nice lineup of benefits. Add the fact that it has no annual fee and it becomes a card worth considering for any frequent cruiser.

  1. Generous Sign-Up Bonus: This card comes with a nice sign-up bonus of 10,000 points that translates into $100 when used for travel or onboard credits.
  2. Good Earning Potential on Norwegian: Unlike other cruise cards that only earn 2 points per dollar, with Norwegian you earn 3 points per dollar.
  3. More Travel Redemption Options: WorldPoints can be used for purchases with Norwegian and for airfare, hotels, rental cars, gift cards and cash rewards.
  4. No Annual Fee: Keep the card for the long haul as you’ll never have to pay an annual fee.
  5. Earn Free Cruises: Redeem 60,000 points for a free Bahamas cruise for two.

Should You Get the Norwegian Cruise Line World Mastercard?

If you’re a frequent Norwegian cruiser, it makes sense to get the Norwegian Cruise Line World MasterCard. You won’t be paying an annual fee, so there is no cost to keep the card, and you’ll be earning three points on cruise expenditures you’re already making as a regular cruiser.

The points you earn can be converted to onboard credits for your next cruise, or you can save your points until you accumulate enough for a free cruise. If you’re not cruising with Norwegian or cruise infrequently, there is no incentive to get this card. You would do better with a general travel card with a larger sign-up bonus and better everyday earning.

FAQs

Need more info? Check out our frequently asked questions. If you have other questions, please click on “Ask Now” below.

  • As soon as the WorldPoints you have earned on your card are deposited into your Norwegian rewards account, they are ready to redeem. While points are not transferrable to airline or hotel programs, you can redeem them for a variety of travel, cash rewards and even gift cards.
Cruise redemptions generally result in a value of one cent per point, however, some options, like the 60,000 points redemption for a cruise for two to the Bahamas, yield a better return. You can redeem points with Norwegian by contacting them directly or visiting their website.
One advantage of WorldPoints is that you can also use them to purchase airfare and other travel. Travel can be purchased using WorldPoints through the Bank of America WorldPoints Rewards Redemption Center. You can redeem for airfare, hotels and rental cars. The number of points needed varies and is determined at the time of purchase. Higher levels of redemptions can result in a better value per point.
  • Points earned via spending on your Norwegian Cruise Line World MasterCard are deposited into your WorldPoints account. Five years after the points are earned, they expire. Activity on the WorldPoints account or credit card does not keep the points from expiring, so you’ll want to be sure to use up the points before the five-year expiration date.
  • When you receive your Norwegian Cruise Line World MasterCard, you’ll also receive a guide to your benefits that explains how to earn and redeem points. You can redeem points directly with Norwegian Cruise Lines, by visiting the WorldPoints redemption section of the website or contacting them directly. A 3- to 4-night cruise to the Bahamas for two persons starts at 60,000 points. A 7-day Caribbean or Mexican Riviera cruise for two persons starts at 137,900 points. You can add a third person to your stateroom for 40,000 points. Using points for onboard credits starts at 5,000 points for a $50 credit.

Compare Cards

As evidenced by their 10,000 points offerings, all of these Bank of America cruise cards are created equal when it comes to sign-up bonuses. When looking at earnings for everyday purchases, you’ll find that all of these cruise cards come up short on earning potential at only one point per dollar for purchases other than those from their respective cruise lines.

Taking a deeper look at earning potential, you’ll find that both Royal Caribbean and Celebrity Cruises offer two points per dollar on their respective cruise lines. The Norwegian card wins the comparison here as you’ll earn a respectable three points per dollar on Norwegian purchases.

When it comes time to redeem your points, you’ll find that each card offers a standard value of about one cent each. However, when redeeming a greater number of points with the cruise lines, you’ll find that all of the cards offer better value.

Royal Caribbean and Celebrity both offer a free cruise for two with a value of up to $1,000 for only 50,000 points. Norwegian also offers a free cruise when redeeming 60,000 points for a cruise to the Bahamas for two persons.

Since the Celebrity Cruises card has a $69 fee and the other cards have zero annual fees, you may rule it out altogether, but it does offer additional earning potential if you spend heartily on the card. In the first year you’ll earn 10,000 bonus points for $10,000 in spending. You’ll also receive a $300 cruise discount and a $50 airfare credit, plus a few discounts on dining and beverages. After the first year, however, there is little benefit to having the card and paying the fee.

If you’re a Norwegian cruiser the Norwegian Cruise Line World MasterCard is a good choice for a co-branded cruise credit card. It earns more points per dollar spent than other cards, has a broad choice of redemption options, charges no annual fee and doesn’t require big spending.

Compare the Norwegian Cruise Line World MasterCard to Other Cards

There are a lot of similarities between co-branded cruise line credit cards. The good news regarding the specific cards below is that none of them charge an annual fee. Also, there’s no need for big spending; your first purchase on any of these cards earns you the sign-up bonus. All of these cards allow you to redeem points for airfare, too. However, you’ll find that there are some differences between these cards that could influence your selection.

Check if Norwegian Cruise Line® World Mastercard® is the best option for you

When it comes to the initial sign-up bonus, both the Norwegian Cruise Line World MasterCard and the Carnival World MasterCard offer 10,000 points after the first purchase. Both the Holland America Line Rewards Visa and the Princess Cruises Rewards Visa offer only 5,000 points each.

All of the cards above, except the Norwegian World MasterCard, offer up to an additional 5,000 bonus points for transfers and provide a 15-month 0% APR period.

Regarding redemptions, the Carnival World MasterCard has too many low-level redemptions that yield less than one cent per point. The Holland America Visa and Princess Visa both offer a value of 2.5 cents per point when redeeming for a cruise that costs $4,001 or higher.

For a co-branded cruise credit card to deliver any value, the cardholder needs to be a frequent cruiser on the respective cruise line. If you’re a frequent cruiser on Norwegian, the better earning potential, the fact that there is no annual fee and the ability to earn onboard credits and free cruises makes the Norwegian MasterCard worthy of consideration.
