"Must-have for any frequent JetBlue flyer"

The JetBlue Plus card is a must-have for any frequent JetBlue flyer. The card has both good point-earning power as well as a nice array of travel benefits. The card comes with a 30,000 points sign-up bonus after spending $1,000 in the first 90 days. The card earns double points at both restaurants and grocery stores, plus an incredible 6x points on JetBlue purchases. Your points are even more valuable because cardholders get a 10 percent refund every time they redeem for an award flight.

This card also has great perks for flying on JetBlue. You’ll get a free checked bag and a 50 percent discount on in-flight purchases. Plus you can earn TrueBlue Mosaic elite status by spending $50,000 during a calendar year.

There are a few drawbacks to this card as well. The JetBlue Plus Mastercard comes with a $99 annual fee that is not waived for the first year. More importantly, JetBlue does not fly to as many cities as the large legacy airlines, and therefore the card may not be useful to as many travelers.

Bonuses and Benefits

Knowing what benefits come with a credit card can help you decide if it’s a good fit for you. Here we cover the bonuses and perks that the JetBlue® Plus MasterCard® offers and the value of the Barclays TrueBlue points you earn.

Bonuses

The Barclays JetBlue Plus card comes with a 30,000 points sign-up bonus after spending $1,000 in the first 90 days of opening the account. With a typical redemption value of 1.68 cents per mile, the sign-up bonus is worth approximately $504. In addition, the JetBlue Plus card automatically gives you 5,000 points each year when you renew your account. At the same valuation of 1.68 cents per mile, that’s worth $84, which offsets most of the $99 annual fee.

The JetBluePlus Mastercard also offers an annual spending bonus that fast tracks you to elite status. If you spend $50,000 in a calendar year, you automatically receive Mosaic status, which grants a wide range of benefits which we will cover below. Another great bonus that comes with this card is the 10 percent return for points used for flight redemptions. That effectively increases the value of your points by 10 percent.

And if you ever book vacation packages through JetBlue, which include airfare and a hotel, you’re eligible to get a $100 statement credit every year you have the card.

On unique benefit offered by JetBlue is family point pooling. This allows up to two adults and five children to combine their points into one account, making it easier to track, manage and use your points.

What You Get

  • Earn 30,000 points after you spend $1,000 within the first 3 months
  • Get a 5,000  points anniversary bonus  every year  you have the card. You’ll get 10 percent of your points back every time you redeem them for airfare
  • Vacation packages booked through JetBlue earn a $100  statement credit annually
  • Spend $50,000 in a year  and enjoy Mosaic elite status with JetBlue

This is great compared to most airlines which require account activity to keep points from expiring. If you decide the save your points for a big trip, there’s nothing to worry about. You’re points would disappear.

What is the value of the TrueBlue Points?

JetBlue does not have an award chart like many airlines. Instead the cost of an award flight is largely determined by the cash price of the ticket. However, there is still variation in pricing based on available, date and destination, so it’s not a true fixed-value program.

The value of TrueBlue points tend to range between 1 and 1.9 cents each. Mint fares (JetBlue’s premium cabin product available on transcontinental and Caribbean flights) tend to have the highest values, typically at 1.7 cents per point. We’ve determined the average cent per point for JetBlue redemptions to be 1.6.

Mint fares that are a cheaper cash price are generally a sweet spot for award redemptions. For more expensive Mint fares, the price in points rises faster than the cost in dollars, which reduces the cents per mile. CPM also tends to fall if you need to add connections or otherwise complicate the itinerary.

What is CPM and How Is It Calculated?

Cents Per Mile (CPM) is a way to measure the value of miles. It tells you how many cents you get for each mile you redeem by dividing the cash price of the airline ticket (minus taxes and fees charged for an award ticket) by the number of miles the award flight costs. This is a somewhat subjective calculation because the price of the flight in both cash and miles fluctuates by season and availability.

The Best Ways to Redeem TrueBlue Points

JetBlue claims to have a revenue-based award program where the award price varies based on the published base fare at the time of booking. The price is also determined by a variety of other factors, such as the route, time and date of the flight. In other words, peak travel times on popular routes will cost more.

There are no award charts, so the price of any award can only be determined by searching JetBlue’s website. There are pros and cons to JetBlue’s award system. You can get decent value for your points even when redeeming them for relatively cheap flights, since the award price will also be relatively low. The redemption values of points will not vary as much as with zone- or distance-based systems either. The main con is that it is not possible to get outsized value for your points, as the best redemptions typically top out around 1.9 cents per point.

The best redemptions are typically for JetBlue’s Mint premium cabin product on transcontinental or Caribbean flights. JetBlue points are also eligible to be redeemed on Hawaiian Airlines.

Other ways you can redeem points

Vacation Packages

JetBlue allows you to redeem points for vacation packages, which include airfare and a hotel. These can only be booked using the cash + points option.

Magazine Subscriptions

Points can be redeemed for magazine subscriptions. There is a wide variety of titles to choose from. Redemptions start at just 100 points.

Flights on Hawaiian Airlines

While JetBlue is not a member of an airline alliance, they do have a partnership with Hawaiian Airlines. These award flights cannot be booked online; you must make your reservations by phone at 1-800-JETBLUE (538-2583).

Everyday Earning

The bonus categories offered by the JetBlue Plus MasterCard make it the best credit card to earn JetBlue points. Most co-branded airline cards don’t offer bonus categories outside of spending with that specific airline. The JetBlue Plus card earns 2X points at both restaurants and grocery stores. These categories comprise a significant portion of many people’s budgets, and therefore offer the ability to rack up a lot of points fast. The card also earns 6X on JetBlue purchases.

Travel Benefits

In-Flight Savings

Get 50 percent off eligible in-flight purchases, including cocktails, beer, wine, meals and JetBlue movies.

No Foreign Transaction Fee

You’ll never pay a fee for using your JetBlue card, no matter where you’re traveling.

Free Checked Bag

The primary card member and up to three travel companions on the same reservation each receive their first checked bag free on JetBlue flights. In order to receive this benefit, the fare must have been purchased with the JetBlue Plus MasterCard and the card member’s TrueBlue number must be entered at the time of booking.

Get 10% of Your Points Back

10 percent of the points you redeem will be returned to you. There is no cap on number of points you can earn using this benefit.

Earn Elite Status Fast

JetBlue has only one level of elite status called Mosaic. Earning Mosaic status typically requires 30 segments plus 12,000 base flight points, or 15,000 base flight points. JetBlue Plus card holders can earn status by spending $50,000 in a calendar year, even without flying. Mosaic status comes with benefits such as waived change and cancellation fees, two free checked bags, 15,000 bonus points upon qualification, and faster points earnings.

  • Earn Mosaic status after spending $50,000 on your card

Fees: the cost of Having the Card

The annual fee for this card is $99. At a typical valuation of 1.68 cents per mile, you would need to spend $6,188 in a year to earn enough points to offset the annual fee. However, with an automatic annual renewal bonus of 5,000 points, you would really only need to spend $1,188 to earn the remainder of the points. In addition, the JetBlue Plus card earns double points on groceries and at restaurants, so if some of your spending falls into these categories, you would need to spend even less.

The annual fee is not waived for the first year. However, the 30,000 -point sign-up bonus easily covers the cost of the annual fee.

Top 5 Benefits of the JetBlue® Plus MasterCard®

The JetBlue Plus card combines strong earning power with solid array of travel benefits. Here are the top 5 perks of being a cardholder:

  1. Great Earning Potential: This card has three bonus-earning categories: 6X on JetBlue purchases, 2X at restaurants, and 2X at grocery stores.
  2. Free Checked Bag: The primary card member and up to three travel companions on the same reservation get a free checked bag. This can result in up to $200 of savings on a round-trip flight.
  3. Big Sign-Up Bonus: This card comes with a 30,000 points sign-up bonus that’s worth approximately $504 in airfare
  4. Ability to Earn Elite Status: You can earn Mosaic status when you spend $50,000 in a calendar year. Status gets you more free checked bags, free alcoholic beverages and priority benefits
  5. Anniversary Bonus: Each year you renew your card, you’ll automatically receive 5,000 bonus points. This offsets most of the annual fee.

Should You Get the JetBlue Plus Card?

The JetBlue Plus card is great for frequent JetBlue travelers. The annual anniversary bonus makes this card relatively cheap to have. For anyone that flies at least 2 to 3 times a year on JetBlue, the free checked bag benefit alone can pay for the card.

More than that, this card has significantly better earning power than most co-branded airline cards. With 2x points at both restaurants and grocery stores, plus an impressive 6x points for JetBlue purchases, there are a ton of opportunities to rack up the points and earn your next free flight quickly.

The card is also great for those seeking a shortcut to elite status. Spending $50,000 in a calendar earns you automatic Mosaic status. There are no qualifying mile thresholds or other requirements to reach; status can be earned with the card alone.

FAQs

Need more info? Check out our frequently asked questions. If you have other questions, please click on “Ask Now” below.

  • The JetBlue Plus card is issued by Barclaycard and can be applied for on their website. Barclaycard is not the strictest of card issuers, and they don’t have any hard and fast rules regarding approval or sign-up bonuses like some other banks. Chase will not approve you for most cards if you have opened five or more accounts in the past 24 months; Amex typically won’t approve more than 4 to 5 credit cards; and Citi has restrictions on sign-up bonuses that apply to entire families of cards. If you are having trouble with other banks, Barclaycard may be a place to look.

  • Banks rarely publish explicit credit scores that are required for approval. Your credit score is just one factor they consider when approving or denying applications. However, those with credit scores above 740 will typically be approved for almost any card. Many people start having success with applications once their credit scores reach the upper 600s (around 680 to 690). Keep your utilization ratio low (outstanding debt to credit lines ratio) in order to improve your credit score quickly.

  • The JetBlue Plus card is a fantastic way to rack up JetBlue miles, which are called TrueBlue points. The card earns bonus points for JetBlue purchases and at restaurants and grocery stores. Amex Membership Rewards transfer to JetBlue, but the transfer rate isn’t great at 250 MR points to 200 TrueBlue points. Citi Thankyou points also transfer to the airline, but their cards don’t have a bonus category as broad as groceries. No card has a better earning rate on JetBlue purchases than the 6x offered by this card.

  • The current sign-up bonus for the JetBlue Plus card is 30,000 points after spending $1,000 in the first 90 days. This is a relatively low spending requirement for the size of the bonus. It is also a much higher offer than the 5,000 points available for the no annual fee version of the JetBlue card, and is therefore the best option for people looking to earn TrueBlue points quickly.

Barclaycard offers three different JetBlue credit cards. There’s the no annual fee JetBlue Card, which offers a 5,000 points sign-up bonus, the JetBlue Plus card discussed in this post, and the JetBlue Plus Business card, which is essentially identical to the personal Plus card.

The JetBlue Plus card and the JetBlue Plus Business card offer the same sign-up bonus and benefits. The business card is only available to small business owners and independent contractors.

The no annual fee card has less earning power for JetBlue purchases (3X vs. 6X) as well as not offering free checked bags or the ability to earn Mosaic status. The standard no-fee JetBlue card still offers 2X at restaurants and grocery stores, though, and may be a good option for less frequent travelers.

Compare JetBlue Plus Card to Other Cards

The JetBlue Plus card has one of the best overall sets of benefits compared to other co-branded airline cards with similar annual fees. However, there are other cards that have bigger sign-up bonuses.

30,000points offer
JetBlue® Plus MasterCard®

Check if JetBlue® Plus MasterCard® is the best option for you

There are many co-branded airline cards on the market. The Gold Delta SkyMiles offers a 30,000 miles sign-up bonus, a free checked bag and priority boarding. However, it does not offer some of the other benefits of the JetBlue Plus card, such as a shortcut to elite status, an anniversary bonus, non-airline bonus-earning categories or a points rebate.

The AAdvantage® Aviator™ Red World Elite MasterCard has a larger sign up bonus at 50,000 miles. It also offers free checked bags and a 10 percent mileage rebate on redemptions. The United MileagePlus Explorer Card has the largest sign-up bonus of all these cards at 40,000 miles. This card also comes with a free checked bag and two one-time use United Club passes.

In the end, the best co-branded airline card for you will be the one that you’ll use the most. If you often fly on a particular airline, then that carrier’s co-branded card will probably be the best option for you. Earning thousands of JetBlue TrueBlue points won’t do you any good if you don’t use them.
