For excellent/good credit
"Great if you’re looking for a big boost to your HawaiianMiles account."

The Hawaiian Airlines World Elite MasterCard is probably not the first credit card that comes to mind when you think about earning miles for award flights. While the airline’s network is relatively small and the Hawaiian Airlines HawaiianMiles frequent flyer program is not known for having great partners, this card can be great for the right person.

If you’re planning a big trip to Hawaii, you’ll find the sign-up bonus to be very useful. The 35,000-mile bonus is worth at least $550 in flights on Hawaiian or one of its partners.

And if you plan on flying with Hawaiian Airlines regularly, the Hawaiian Airlines MasterCard can save you even more money. It provides a free checked bag if you purchase your flight directly through the carrier’s website and pay with the card.

You’ll also receive a one-time, 50 percent discount on a companion ticket for a round-trip economy class flight between North America and Hawaii on Hawaiian Airlines. Additionally, every year you renew the card, you’ll get a $100 discount on another companion ticket.

Bonuses and Benefits

Knowing what benefits come with a credit card can help you decide if it’s a good fit for you. Here we cover the bonuses and perks that the Hawaiian Airlines® World Elite MasterCard® offers and the value of the Barclays HawaiianMiles® miles you earn.

Bonuses

The Hawaiian Airlines credit card has a solid sign-up bonus of 35,000 miles after spending $1,000 within the first 90 days of holding the card. Every year you keep the card, you will receive an anniversary bonus of 5,000 miles if you spend $10,000 or more. Remember, this is calculated based on your card anniversary year, not the calendar year.

Probably the most interesting aspect of the Hawaiian Airlines MasterCard is the ShareMiles program. If you have the Hawaiian Airlines credit card, you can receive HawaiianMiles from friends or family without being charged a fee. The transfer process can be completed online and a cardholder may receive up to ten transfers per calendar year.

What You Get

  • Earn 35,000 points after you spend $1,000 on purchases in the first 3 months
  • Every year you have the card you’ll get a bonus of& 5,000  miles after spending  $10,000 or more
  • Get a one-time 50% off companion fare between North American and Hawaii
  • Receive an annual $100 companion discount after the first year for flights between North American and Hawaii

HawaiianMiles expire if your account has no activity for 18 consecutive months. Qualifying activity is defined as earning or redeeming miles. If you use the Hawaiian Airlines credit card once every 18 months, that’s all it would take to keep your miles active.

What is the value of the HawaiianMiles® Miles?

Like the vast majority of airline loyalty programs around the world, HawaiianMiles are most valuable when used for international business class flights. The worst redemption option is for domestic economy flights which, on average, are worth about 1.59 cents per mile.

This pales in comparison with the average cents per miles of an international business class flight which comes in at just over 5 cents per mile. To get the most out of your HawaiianMiles, consider booking a business class award from Hawaii to China or Australia for 65,000 miles.

If you have the Hawaiian Airlines card you also received discounted award rates on flights between North America and Hawaii. Additionally, as a cardholder, there are no blackout dates for award bookings.

What is CPM and How Is It Calculated?

Cents Per Mile (CPM) is a way to measure the value of miles. It tells you how many cents you get for each mile you redeem by dividing the cash price of the airline ticket (minus taxes and fees charged for an award ticket) by the number of miles the award flight costs. This is a somewhat subjective calculation because the price of the flight in both cash and miles fluctuates by season and availability.

The Best Ways to Redeem Hawaiian Miles

Hawaiian Airlines HawaiianMiles program uses a region-based award chart. The number of HawaiianMiles required to book an award ticket is determined by the regions involved in your booking, as well as the class of service.

HawaiianMiles offer three levels of economy class awards: Super Saver, Coach Saver and Coach Flex. They also offer two levels of first/business class awards: First/Business Saver and First/Business Flex.

When booking awards with HawaiianMiles, you want to make sure you are booking at the saver level to get the most out of your miles.

By spending $2,000 per month, the annual fee will be offset by the value of the points earned in three months. Additionally, you should consider the value of the complimentary checked bags and the companion ticket discount.

With a sign-up bonus of 35,000 miles, the bonus more than covers the annual fee for the first year.

Top 6 Benefits of the Hawaiian Airlines® World Elite MasterCard®

The Hawaiian Airlines MasterCard gives you the ability to earn miles in another loyalty program to help you book your next adventure. Check out the top five benefits of the card:

  1. Good Sign-Up Bonus: Earn a quick 35,000 miles that can easily be worth $525 in travel on Hawaiian Airlines and its partners.
  2. Free Checked Bags: When you pay for your Hawaiian Airlines flight with your Hawaiian Airlines credit card, you get a complimentary checked bag worth $25 per segment.
  3. Discounted Award Flights: Cardholders receive access to discounted mileage costs for award booking.
  4. Share Miles: Cardholders may receive transfers of HawaiianMiles from friends or family into their account at no charge.
  5. Big Spend Bonus: Every year you spend $10,000 on your Hawaiian Airlines credit card, you’ll earn an anniversary bonus of 5,000 miles.
  6. Companion Ticket Discount: Receive a one-time 50% discount, and then a $100 discount every account anniversary after that, for a round-trip economy class companion ticket between North America and Hawaii.

Should You Get the Hawaiian Airlines® World Elite MasterCard®?

The Hawaiian Airlines credit card comes with several benefits right off the bat, including a sign-up bonus of 35,000 HawaiianMiles and a one-time 50% discount on a companion ticket. Cardholders also receive one complimentary checked bag on flights with Hawaiian Airlines and an annual bonus of 5,000 HawaiianMiles when they spend $10,000 by the account anniversary. Finally, the ShareMiles program allows free transfer of miles into their HawaiianMiles account.

If you’re looking for a big boost to your HawaiianMiles account, the 35,000 miles sign-up bonus is a great move, even though the annual fee of $89 is not waived the first year.

Unlike other co-branded airline credit cards, such as the United MileagePlus card, the Hawaiian Airlines MasterCard does not help you earn status with the airline. Additionally, while it earns 2 miles per dollar on purchases with Hawaiian Airlines, it only earns 1 mile per dollar on all other purchases.

Despite that, if you’re going to be flying with Hawaiian Airlines regularly, but not often enough to earn status, the complimentary checked bag could save you a lot of money. And if you’re able to use them, the sign-up bonus and companion passes are worth a lot more than the small annual fee. While not the most flexible rewards card, the Hawaiian Airlines card could be great for the right person.

FAQs

Need more info? Check out our frequently asked questions. If you have other questions, please click on “Ask Now” below.

  • Hawaiian Airlines has a region-based award chart that is easy to use. As an airline based in Hawaii, the award chart is centered around flights to and from the islands. To book you need to visit Hawaiian Airlines’ website, select HawaiianMiles from the menu, then select Redeem so you can perform a search for award tickets.

Not all flights are available for redemption at the saver level. Sometimes flights are only available at the more expensive Flex level. Make sure you book saver level awards to maximize the value you can get from your HawaiianMiles.

As a Hawaiian Airlines cardholder, you also get access to discounted award flights which can be even cheaper than saver level awards.

  • Unlike some cards, like the Chase Sapphire Reserve and Chase Sapphire Preferred, the Hawaiian Airlines MasterCard does not come with trip delay insurance, primary insurance that covers rental cars or any other premium travel protection benefits.
  • Does the Hawaiian Airlines credit card help earn status with Hawaiian Airlines?

The HawaiianMiles program has two levels of elite status: Pulani Gold and Pulani Platinum. You can also purchase a Premier Club membership for $299 or 40,000 HawaiianMiles (35,000 for renewal).

To earn Pulani Gold status, you need 20,000 flight miles or 30 segments within a year. Pulani Platinum requires 40,000 flight miles or 60 segments within a year. You also receive top priority as a Pulani Platinum with 75,000 flight miles in a year. Neither Pulani Gold or Pulani Platinum require a minimum amount of spend on Hawaiian Airllines’ flights.

The Hawaiian Airlines credit card does not help you earn status of any kind with the HawaiianMiles program.

  • Typically, a HawaiianMiles member can transfer miles to another HawaiianMiles member for a fee. A minimum of 2,000 HawaiianMiles is required to make a transfer and it costs 1 cent per mile. Additionally, there is a $25 service fee per transfer.

With the Hawaiian Airlines MasterCard, you can accept transfers of miles into your HawaiianMiles account through the ShareMiles program at no charge. This is a big benefit if you need a few more miles to complete an award booking. Cardholders may receive up to 10 mileage transfers per year.

While the sign-up bonus of the Hawaiian Airlines business card is the same as the personal card, it does not require the cardholder to spend $1,000 to earn the sign-up bonus. Rather, only one purchase is required to trigger the sign-up bonus, which makes it much easier to earn. Both cards earn 2 miles per dollar on purchases with Hawaiian Airlines but only 1 mile per dollar on all other purchases.

Both cards come with a one-time 50 percent discount for a companion ticket, but the personal version also receives a $100 discount on a companion fare every account anniversary. Neither card incurs a foreign transaction fee when used abroad.

Perhaps the biggest difference between the cards is the annual bonus cardholders receive after meeting a minimum spend for the year. The personal Hawaiian Airlines credit card earns a 5,000 miles bonus after $10,000 in spending, but the business version earns a 20,000 miles bonus after $50,000 in annual purchases. And if you make $100,000 in purchases, you‘ll get an impressive 40,000 miles bonus. If you can meet the bigger minimum spend, the business card offers a lot more value.

Cardholders of either card are eligible for fee-free mile transfers to their accounts under the ShareMiles program. Additionally, both cards provide a complimentary checked bag for the cardholder.

Finally, both cards come with an $89 annual fee that is not waived the first year.

Either card could be right for a person traveling regularly on Hawaiian Airline to help save on checked bag fees and make award redemptions easier.

Compare the Hawaiian Airlines® World Elite MasterCard® to Other Cards

The Hawaiian Airlines credit card can be useful for those wanting to redeem miles for award flights on Hawaiian Airlines or even one of its partners. The co-branded cards below offer similar benefits with other airlines, but there are some differences too.

35,000miles offer
Hawaiian Airlines® World Elite MasterCard®

Check if Hawaiian Airlines® World Elite MasterCard® is the best option for you

The Gold Delta SkyMiles credit card has a standard sign-up bonus of 30,000 miles, though it sometimes goes as high as 50,000 or 60,000 miles. The annual fee is just slightly more expensive than the Hawaiian card at $95 , but it’s waived the first year. Unlike Hawaiian Airlines which is not part of an airline alliance, Delta is part of SkyTeam, which has 20 members with which you can book award flights.

The United MileagePlus Explorer card has a much better sign-up bonus at 50,000 miles. It comes with a $95 annual fee which is waived the first year. United is a member of Star Alliance, the largest airline alliance in the world. The Star Alliance also has a strong presence in Europe.

The JetBlue Plus Card has a 30,000 miles sign-up bonus and a $99 annual fee which is not waived the first year. Unlike Hawaiian Airlines, United and Delta, JetBlue does not use a region-based award chart. JetBlue utilizes a revenue-based chart which pegs the mileage cost of an award to the cash price of a ticket. Additionally, JetBlue does not have as strong of an international presence as the other three airlines. That being said, it can be great for domestic flights.

None of these cards has a particularly good earning structure. Like the Hawaiian Airlines credit card, the Gold Delta SkyMiles credit card and the United MileagePlus Explorer card earn only 2 miles per dollar with their respective airlines and 1 mile per dollar on everything else. JetBlue is different in that it earns a generous 6 miles per dollar on JetBlue purchases and 1 miles per dollar at restaurants and grocery stores.
