"Great backup for those who often book award tickets using traditional airline miles"

The U.S. Bank FlexPerks Visa Signature card is a great travel rewards card that has solid earning power, flexible redemption options and good travel benefits. The combination of good earning power and a tiered reward chart allows for potentially higher overall value than other fixed-value point currencies.

The FlexPerks Visa has multiple bonus categories and allows cardholders some flexibility in which categories they want to earn bonus points. Charitable donations earn three points per dollar, and you can earn two points per dollar on cell phone service plus whichever of the following categories you have the highest amount of spending in each billing period: gas stations, airlines or grocery stores.

FlexPerks points can be worth up to two cents each when redeemed for airfare. Points can also be redeemed for hotels, car rentals and cruises at a fixed rate of one cent each.

The FlexPerks card is a great backup for booking paid flights when either the cost or availability of awards prevents you from using traditional airline miles.

Bonuses and Benefits

Knowing what benefits come with a credit card can help you decide if it’s a good fit for you. Here we cover the bonuses and perks that the FlexPerks® Travel Rewards Visa Signature® Card offers and the value of the U.S. Bank U.S. Bank FlexPerks® Rewards FlexPoints® you earn.

Bonuses

The FlexPerks Visa card comes with a sign-up bonus of 20,000 points after spending $2,000 within the first four months. The 20,000 points can be redeemed for a flight that costs up to $400. The points could also be redeemed for a $200 gift certificate good for hotels, car rentals or cruises.

What You Get

  • Earn 20,000 FlexPoints® after you spend $2,000 on purchases in the first 4 months
  • $25 Airline Allowance per award ticket to cover bag fees or in-flight purchases
  • 12 Gogo in-flight Wi-Fi passes a year
  • 3 FlexPoints® per dollar donated to charities
  • 2 FlexPoints® per dollar for mobile phone service
  • 2 FlexPoints® per dollar for the category you spend the most in during a month: gas, groceries or airfare

FlexPerks expire at the end of the calendar quarter five years from date which they were earned. FlexPerks redemptions occur on a first-in, first-out basis, so your oldest points will be used first. Expiration cannot be extended, so don’t wait too long to redeem your points.

What is the value of the U.S. Bank FlexPerks® Rewards Flexpoints®?

FlexPerks has a very unique award chart for flight redemptions. It is neither a true fixed-value chart, nor an airline-style award chart with regions, distances, etc. Instead, FlexPerks uses ranges that allow the value of your points to vary from a little over one cent per point up to two cents. You can redeem 20,000 points for a flight that costs up to $400; 30,000 points for a flight up to $600; 40,000 points for up to $800; and so on.

The way to maximize your points’ value is to find a flight at the top of the range to get the full two cents per point. However, even in the middle of a range you can get 1.67 cents per point (say a $500 flight for 30,000 points). When combined with the points earned in the bonus categories, this card offers a solid overall return.

What is CPM and How Is It Calculated?

Cents Per Mile (CPM) is a way to measure the value of miles or points. It tells you how many cents you get for each mile or point you redeem by dividing the cash price of the airline ticket by the number of miles or points the award flight costs. That amount is multiplied by the number of miles or points earned per dollar spent on everyday purchases to account for cards that earn more than one mile per dollar spent.

How we calculate CPM:

The Best Ways to Redeem FlexPerks® Travel Rewards Flexpoints®

The best way to redeem FlexPerks is for airfare, where can be worth as much as two cents each. Even a relatively low value flight award is still more valuable than redemptions for hotels, cruises or rental cards which are only worth one cent per point. Make sure to verify the price of your flight before booking as the FlexPerks search engine will sometimes return slightly different costs than airline websites.

ic_elite_statusCreated with Sketch.Earn Elite Status Fast

The FlexPerks card does not offer any direct way of earning elite status credits. However, you can add your frequent flyer number to your FlexPerks flight awards and receive elite qualification credit from the airline, just like a regular paid flight.

Fees: the cost of Having the Card

This card has an introductory annual fee of $0 for the first 12 months and $49 after that. If all of your points are earned on un-bonused spending, you’ll need to make $3,684 in purchases a year to cover the cost of the card. That’s assuming your points are worth about 1.33 cents each, though the value can go up to two cents if you plan your redemptions carefully. If you spend about $2,000 a month, you’ll pay off the card in two months.

Of course with this card’s many bonus categories and the ability to redeem points for up to two cents each, you could pay off the annual fee with a much lower amount of spending. The sign-up bonus of 20,000 points is worth at least $266, which far exceeds the annual fee.

Conclusion

The FlexPerks Visa is a great card to have as a backup for those who often book award tickets using traditional airline miles. When cheapest awards aren’t available, FlexPerks can be used instead, resulting in significant savings.

FlexPerks are also good for those who often book flights where the value of traditional airline miles is relatively low, such as domestic economy class tickets. The combination of the bonus categories and the ability to redeem for up to two cents per mile makes this card more valuable than other fixed-value currencies, such as Barclaycard Arrival miles or Capital One Venture miles.

FAQs

Need more info? Check out our frequently asked questions. If you have other questions, please click on “Ask Now” below.

  • FlexPoints are the rewards currency for the U.S. Bank FlexPerks program. You can earn these points by using a card in the FlexPerks lineup, like the FlexPerks Travel Rewards Visa Signature. You can use those points in one of two ways. You can either redeem them for travel through the FlexPerks travel center or receive statement credits toward any purchase. The best way to use FlexPoints is to buy airfare through the travel center. Redeeming in this way will get you a value of up to two cents per point. All other redemptions, including statement credits and other travel purchases through the travel center, are worth only one cent per point.
  • U.S. Bank has a reputation for being one of the stingier credit cards issuers. They use different credit bureaus than most issuers, which can make it more difficult to qualify. You may want to consider freezing your credit reports with ARS and Sagestream, the agencies used by U.S. Bank. Several applicants have reported that they successfully receive cards after doing so.
  • If you also have a business card, you may have difficulty logging in because U.S. Bank does not offer seamless integration of business and personal cards. If you have a business account and open a personal FlexPerks card, you will end up with two separate logins that you will have to keep track of.
  • You’ll want to redeem through the FlexPerks online travel center where you can get up to two cents per point for airfare. The other option, which is redeeming for statement credits, will only yield a value of one cent per point.

When you search for flights through the travel center, be sure to check the cost against the airline’s website. The prices are generally comparable, but sometimes they can be different enough to warrant looking for another option.

Another important aspect of FlexPerks redemptions is that they use set ranges for airfare that increase in $200/10,000-point increments. So you can get a flight that costs up to $400 for 20,000 points, between $401 and $600 for 30,000 points, between $601 and $800 for 40,000 points, etc.

The key to getting the best value is to hit the maximum dollar amount per redemption range for your ticket. So a $200 ticket and a $400 ticket would both cost 20,000 points. Obviously the more expensive ticket is a much better deal.

The various FlexPerks cards differ mainly in their annual fees, sign-up bonuses and bonus categories. Generally, the higher the annual fee, the better the benefits you’ll get.

The Gold American Express card is very similar to the FlexPerks Visa Signature, but it has a few extra perks, like a bigger sign-up bonus and slightly better bonus earning categories. With the biggest fee among these cards, you’ll pay $85 a year. You’ll also get the largest sign-up bonus at 30,000 points, plus a credit to cover the TSA PreCheck/Global Entry application fee and the $25 airline allowance for award flights. Its bonus categories include triple points at restaurants and double points for both gas and airfare.

The Select+ American Express card is the no annual fee option in the FlexPerks lineup. It has a 10,000-point sign-up bonus, which isn’t bad for a no-fee card. However, it doesn’t have any bonus categories for purchases. It’s a risk-free option if you’re interested in checking out the FlexPerks program.

The FlexPerks Travel Rewards Visa Signature falls between these two personal cards, with a $ 49 annual fee and a decent set of benefits. As we’ve covered elsewhere, you’ll get a 20,000-point sign-up bonus, as well as some good bonus categories and a few travel perks.

As the name implies, the FlexPerks Business Edge Travel Rewards card is designed for small business owners and independent contractors who want to earn travel rewards. It’s essentially the business version of the personal FlexPerks Visa Signature. You’ll get the same 20,000-point sign-up bonus and $25 airline allowance.

The bonus categories work the same way as the personal card’s too, though the categories are altered slightly. You’ll get double points for mobile phone service, plus whichever of the following categories you spend the most in during a billing cycle: gas stations, office supply stores or airlines. One unique perk is that the card’s $55 annual fee is waived if you spend at least $24,000 in a year.

Which card is best for you depends on how much you want to pay in annual fees and which categories of purchases you spend the most in.

Compare FlexPerks Travel Rewards Visa Signature Card to Other Cards

The FlexPerks rewards program allows you to redeem points for statement credits and for travel through the U.S. Bank travel center. Some other credit card programs offer transfers to a variety of travel partners. While transferability allows for potentially higher point values, it also relies on award seats being available.

Chase, Citi and Amex all offer transferable points in their own rewards programs. They are Chase Ultimate Rewards, Citi ThankYou and Amex Membership Rewards. All of these programs allow transfers to a variety of airline and hotel partners.

While high-value awards can sometimes be achieved using these currencies, the process of searching for and booking awards is often an arduous task, particularly when compared to using a fixed-value currency like FlexPerks.

The Amex EveryDay is the only no-fee card of the group. It also comes with the smallest sign-up bonus at just 10,000 points, and the fewest bonus categories. You’ll get double points for groceries and just one point per dollar spent on everything else. One nice perk is that you’ll get 20 percent bonus points every month you make at least 20 purchases. On top of that, Amex Membership Rewards is the most flexible credit card rewards program with 17 airline partners.

The Citi ThankYou Premier card has a $95 annual fee, but comes with some better benefits. Not only do you get a 30,000 points sign-up bonus, but you also get triple points for all travel purchases, including gas, plus double points for dining out and entertainment.

The Chase Sapphire Reserve is really in its own league. It has a huge $450 annual fee, but it also comes with a ton of premium travel benefits. You’ll get free airport lounge access, a $300 annual travel credit, a 50 percent bonus on redemptions through the Chase travel portal, a TSA PreCheck/Global Entry fee reimbursement and much more. You’ll also get a generous 50,000-point sign-up bonus and the ability to earn triple points for travel and dining purchases. If you can take advantage of everything that comes with this card, it will more than pay for itself.

Compared to these cards, the FlexPerks Visa has one great advantage: simplicity. There’s no need to transfer points to an airline partner in order to get the best value. Just find the flight you need through the FlexPerks travel center and redeem. You’ll get a value of up to two cents per point, which is impressive for a card that’s as flexible as this one.
