Express Next Credit Card Review
Express is a major American fashion retailer, and like many retailers in today, they offer their very own credit card. Applying for a store credit card can potentially save you some money when shopping with a specific retailer, but cards like the Express credit card may require a significant amount of use before you can begin to benefit from it.
The Express Next credit card is setup like almost any traditional store credit card. It includes a fairly standard rewards program that allows cardholders to collect reward points on purchases made with the card. The points are collected over time and once enough are collected, a reward certificate is added to your account. In addition to the reward program, there are a few additional benefits, including discounts and exclusive offers.
Like many store credit cards, the Express Next credit card is not affiliated with any major payment networks, meaning it can only be used to make purchases and earn rewards when shopping at Express locations. Another similarity between the Express credit card and other store cards is that it includes a pretty high APR.
The Express Next credit card includes very limited benefits. However, a responsible credit card user who shops at express stores frequently enough could benefit from having this card in their credit lineup. Even though this card might be beneficial to you, it may be a wiser option to consider other types of rewards credit cards that will allow you to earn and redeem your rewards with a much broader range of options.
Express Next Credit Card Features and Benefits
Knowing what benefits come with a credit card can help you decide if it’s a good fit for you. Here we cover the bonuses and perks that the Express Next Credit Card offers and the value of the Comenity points you earn.
The Express Next credit card contains a few features and benefits that have the potential to both enhance and convenience a person’s experience when shopping at Express stores. Once an applicant is approved for this card, they will automatically receive a 20 percent discount on the first purchase that is charged to their card.
This card includes a few benefits, but the most significant benefit is the reward opportunities it includes. All cardholders will earn 20 points for every dollar that is charged to their Express Next credit card. This doubles the amount of rewards that are earned as a standard member of the Express Next Rewards Program.
Aside from the rewards program and the discount you receive upon approval, Express Next credit card holders will receive additional benefits, including a birthday gift and access to exclusive offers.
By earning 7,500 points within a year, the Express Next credit card is automatically upgraded to the Express Next A-List credit card. As an A-List cardholder, you’ll receive additional benefits, including free standard shipping on online Express orders that are charged to your A-List credit card.
What You Get
- 20% off your first purchase
- 20 reward points per dollar spent
- $10 reward for every 2500 points ($125 spent)
- Birthday gift
- Access to exclusive offers
- Online account management features
The rewards program included with this credit card is very similar to programs included with many standard credit cards. When making purchases in Express stores with your Express Next credit card, 20 points will be earned for every dollar spent. Once a cardholder collects 2,500 points (spends $125), they will be awarded a $10 gift card. If you’ve been upgraded to the A-List credit card, a $15 gift card will be earned instead.
As of right now, there is no financing available at Express stores and the Express Next credit card itself does not include any type of special financing options.
Out of all the perks included with the Express Next credit card, the one that is most beneficial to Express customers is the ability to collect double reward points. Yes, it’s true that you don’t need the credit card to collect rewards, but without it, you will only be able to collect 10 points for every dollar you spend. Having the card is the only way of collecting 20 points per dollar.
In addition to this, all cardholders will receive exclusive offers, which include money-saving opportunities on future Express purchases.
What Is the Value of Express Next Reward Points?
Express Next is the official loyalty program used by Express stores. All Express Next cardholders will automatically become members of the Express Next Rewards program. Although having the card provides access to the rewards program, it is not necessary to have the card to join the program. Being a cardholder will only increase the number of points you earn.
When shopping at Express stores, Express Next cardholders will earn 20 points for every dollar they spend, while non- cardholders will earn 10. Once a member collects 2,500 points, they will receive $10 in-store credit. Since this is the only thing that can be done with the points received on this card, the value of these points are about .4 cents each, that’s less than half a penny each.
What is CPP and How is it Calculated?
Cents Per Point (CPP) is a way to measure the value of points. It tells you how many cents you get for each point you redeem by dividing the cash price of the hotel room by the number of points of an equivalent award stay costs. This can be a somewhat subjective calculation because the price of the stay in both cash and points fluctuates by season and availability.
Should You Get the Express Next Credit Card?
The Express Next credit card can, without a doubt, save shoppers a few bucks on the purchases they make at Express stores. The card includes access to a rewards program and offers multiple ways for Express shoppers to save money on purchases. But do these features make the card worth applying for?
Before choosing to apply for the Express Next credit card, it’s important to take some time to thoroughly review all the benefits included with the credit card because you might find that the card isn’t as beneficial you think.
The benefits included with this credit card and the reward program it provides access to both seem to be very appealing. Upon approval, you are allowed to take 20 percent off the first purchase you make. When purchases are made, you will collect rewards for them, too. Cardholders also receive a birthday gift and access to exclusive offers.
Although these benefits may seem appealing enough to convince someone to apply for the card, you must realize that the store offers a free rewards program that anyone can join, which includes nearly all the benefits of being a cardholder.
As a member of the rewards program, you can still collect rewards on your Express purchases, but at a slightly lower rate. Instead of collecting 20 points for every dollar spent, 10 points will be collected. Once members collect enough points, they will be awarded with in-store credit. Aside from the rewards similarities, members of the standard loyalty program will also receive a birthday gift.
Aside from the fact that the credit card is nearly identical to the store’s loyalty program, another major problem with the Express Next credit card is that it’s very limited. Since the card is not affiliated with any major payment network, such as Visa or MasterCard, it can only be used to make purchases and collect rewards from Express. The rewards you earn with this card can only be applied to future Express purchases as well.
In addition to the limited user capabilities, this card includes an 28.49% Variable± APR, which is pretty high.
Although this card may contain a few features that have the potential to be beneficial, it may not be worth applying for, depending on how often you plan to shop at Express. Additionally, when you consider the high APR included with this card, it’s not recommended to ever carry a balance beyond your payment periods. Carrying a balance can become very expensive, very quickly.
If you know for a fact that you’ll shop at Express frequently enough and that you’ll never carry a balance, you can choose to apply for this card. However, it may be a wiser decision to apply for a credit card that offers better rewards and a fairer APR.

I don’t have the Express credit card, but I already collect Express Next Rewards points on my purchases. Is there any reason for me to apply for this card? The only reason that you should apply for this card is if you’re looking to collect additional rewards on your Express purchases. If you’re comfortable with the current reward rate, then there is absolutely no reason for you to apply for the credit card. However, if you’re not satisfied with the amount of rewards that you are currently earning, you may have a reason to apply. As a non-cardholder member of the Express Next loyalty program, you will be able to collect 10 points for every dollar spent at Express. Once 2,500 points are collected, a $10 shopping certificate is awarded. If you become a cardholder, rewards are earned twice as fast. Instead of collecting 10 points on every dollar, 20 points are collected. In addition to rewards, cardholders will also receive exclusive shopping offers.Although the Express Next credit card can provide you with additional benefits, it’s important to remember that this card and the rewards you earn with it can only be used at Express. One thing that you can always do instead of applying for the Express Next credit card is apply for a credit card with a more open rewards system. Consider a cashback credit card that will allow you to collect cashback rewards on purchases you make anywhere, including express.
- The Express Next credit card can be applied for either online or by visiting your nearest Express store. To apply online, all you have to do is visit the Express website and fill out an application. The application process is fairly quick, and once your application has been submitted, it will either be approved or declined in a matter of minutes. If you are approved, your credit card will be mailed to you.If you either don’t have a computer or simply wish to apply in person, applying in-store is almost as easy as applying online. Once you’ve arrived at an Express store, all you have to do is locate an associate and ask about applying for their credit card. You will then be directed to someone who will provide you with an application to fill out.Although you may be interested in applying for the Express Next credit card, it’s important to remember that you do not need to be an Express Next credit card holder to gain access to their rewards program. Keep in mind that there are many reward credit cards available that offer a lot more than the credit card offered by Express. In addition to this, applying for too many unnecessary cards can not only hurt your credit, but it can also prevent you from applying for a better card in the future. Rules such as Chase’s 5/24 policy prevent people from being approved for new cards if they’ve opened too many new accounts within two years of attempting to apply.
- The Express Next A-List credit card cannot be applied for under any circumstances. The A-List card is pretty much the same card at a higher status level rather than an additional credit card option. To be upgraded to A-List credit card status, you must earn at least 7,500 points on your Express Next credit card within a single earning period.Although the A-List credit card appears to be slightly better than the standard card offered by Express, it’s important to realize that these cards are nearly identical to each other. Aside from this, the standard loyalty program offered by Express includes many of the benefits that are offered with their credit card.If you’re seriously considering applying for the Express credit card, keep in mind the fact that you need to do a lot of spending on it before you can reach A-List status.
- Once you’ve earned a total of 7,500 points within a single earning period, you will become an Express A-List credit card holder. As an A-List cardholder, you will collect reward points at the same rate of a standard cardholder; however, your points will earn you larger rewards. When a standard Express Next credit card member collects 2,500 points, those points are automatically converted into a $10 shopping credit on their account. When an A-List cardholder collects 2,500 points, they receive a $15 credit instead. In addition to the upgraded rewards, A-List credit card holders can also enjoy free standard shipping on eligible Express.com orders charged to their A-List card. Aside from these benefits, the A-List card is pretty similar to the standard version. It’s important to realize that just because you earn enough points to become an A-list cardholder, it doesn’t mean that you’ll be an A-List cardholder forever. Once 7,500 points are collected, you will retain your A-List cardholder status for the remainder of that year and for the next full program year. If you don’t collect another 7,500 points by the end of your program year, you will be reverted to the standard Express Next credit card.

Best Cashback Card
The card that offers the best overall cashback rewards system would be the Citi Double Cash card. Many cashback credit cards will only allow the user to collect 1 percent cash back on the purchases they make, but the Citi Double Cash card goes a step beyond this.
In addition to the 1 percent you can earn on charges made to the card, an additional 1 percent is received when you pay off those charges. By using this card, you can collect 2.0 percent cash back on all the purchases you make.
The card includes $0 annual fee and has absolutely no caps or category restrictions when it comes to how much 2.0 percent cash back you can earn and where you can earn it.
Best Rotating Category Card
The Discover it Cashback Match card happens to be the only one of these three cards that offers rotating category bonuses. All purchases charged to this card will receive at least 1.0 percent cash back, but eligible purchases will receive 5.0 percent back.
Every three months, Discover it Cashback Match cardholders will be able to collect 5.0 percent cash back for a select category of qualifying purchases. Some of the categories include gas stations, grocery stores, restaurants, wholesale clubs and even Amazon.com. Cardholders can receive 5.0 percent cash back on up to $1,500 in purchases each quarter.
In addition to the rotating category bonus, the Cashback Match card will also award new cardholders with a large cashback bonus after their first year of being a cardholder. Discover will match all of the cash back you’ve collected on the card during your first 12 billing periods.
Best 0% APR Card
The Chase Freedom Unlimited card definitely offers the best 0% APR out of the group. Once an applicant is approved for the card, they will be given a 0% introductory APR for 15 months. Unlike the Citi Double Cash card, this APR will apply to both purchases and balance transfers.
In addition to the 0% introductory APR, the Chase Freedom Unlimited comes with a variety of other benefits, including $0 annual fee and a large sign-up bonus. The bonus is 15,000 if you charge $500 to their card within the first 3 months. While making purchases with the Chase Freedom Unlimited, cardholders will be able to collect unlimited 1.5 percent cash back.
Whenever you apply for a credit card make sure you read the terms and conditions of the card and the rewards program to find out about minimum spend requirements and any restrictions to ensure you can successfully obtain the card and earn the rewards it offers.
