"It offers some nice status benefits with Expedia, useful if you book hotels through the website"

The Expedia+ card from Citi isn’t the most rewarding credit card for everyday spending, but it does offer some nice status benefits with Expedia that will be useful if you regularly book hotels through the website. It also comes with a respectable sign-up bonus and no annual fee.

If you maximize your spending and redemptions, it’s possible to get up to 2.1 percent back on purchases made with the Expedia+ card, but this can be a challenge because the maximum point value only applies to Expedia +VIP Access hotels, which are a subset of the hotels offered on the website.

Since the card has no annual fee, it might make sense for even occasional Expedia users to get it for the Silver status benefits and higher points earning potential for Expedia purchases.

Bonuses and Benefits

Knowing what benefits come with a credit card can help you decide if it’s a good fit for you. Here we cover the bonuses and perks that the Expedia® + Card from Citi offers and the value of the Citi Expedia®+ Rewards points you earn.

Bonuses

The current sign-up bonus for the Expedia+ card is 15,000 points after spending $1,000 within 3 months of becoming a card member. The points earned through the sign-up bonus can be redeemed for $200 toward a stay at a +VIP Access hotel. When you sign up for the Expedia+ card, you’ll be given complimentary Expedia+ Silver status. You can also earn one Elite Qualifying Hotel Night toward Expedia+ Gold status for every $2,500 spent on your card within a calendar year.

What You Get

  • Earn 15,000 points after you spend $1,000 on purchases in the first 3 months
  • Instant Silver Expedia+ status
  • One Elite Qualifying Hotel Night for every $2,500 spent
  • 3 points per dollar spent with Expedia

Your Expedia+ points won’t expire as long as you earn or redeem points at least once every 18 months.

What is the value of the Expedia®+ Rewards Points?

As a general rule, Expedia+ points are worth about 0.7 cents each. This does vary somewhat depending on how you decide to redeem your points, but it’s a good baseline. This means that when you are making everyday purchases with the card, you are only getting 0.7 percent back. When you spend on Expedia, which earns three points per dollar spent, you’ll get a much better return of about 2.1 percent. This value comes from redeeming for Rate Hotel Coupons, and is the middle of the road in terms of what you can get out of your Expedia points. The low end of the range is 0.6 cents each, while the high end of the range is 1.4 cents each, but that is only possible with a small number of hotels.

What is CPM and How Is It Calculated?

Cents Per Mile (CPM) is a way to measure the value of miles or points. It tells you how many cents you get for each mile or point you redeem by dividing the cash price of the airline ticket by the number of miles or points the award flight costs. That amount is multiplied by the number of miles or points earned per dollar spent on everyday purchases to account for cards that earn more than one mile per dollar spent.

How we calculate CPM:

The final result:
0.63cpm

The Best Ways to Redeem Expedia® + Points

If you redeem for these hotels, your Expedia+ points are worth 1.4 cents each. If you redeem for Rate Hotels, your Expedia+ points will be worth 0.7 cents each, and if you redeem your points for flights they’ll be worth 0.6 cents each.

Top 5 Benefits of the Expedia®+ Card From Citi

The Expedia+ card is going to benefit you most if you book hotel stays through Expedia.

  1. Expedia+ Silver Status: Earn automatic Silver status with this no annual fee card.
  2. Sign-Up Bonus: Earn a 15,000 points sign-up bonus after completing minimum spending requirements. This bonus is worth $200 when redeemed for +VIP Access hotels.
  3. Earn Higher Status With Spending: For every $2,500 you spend on your Expedia+ card, you’ll earn one night toward Expedia+ Gold status.
  4. No Annual Fee: This card doesn’t charge an annual fee.
  5. Bonus for Expedia Bookings: When you spend on Expedia, you’ll earn 3 points per dollar spent for most of your purchases.

Should You Get the Expedia®+ Card From Citi?

The Expedia+ card is a decent option for someone looking for a simple, no annual fee travel rewards card. But that’s only if you book through Expedia because those are the only purchases that will earn bonus points. All other purchases earn just one point per dollar. The card makes the most sense for someone who makes some or all of their travel bookings with Expedia.

Additionally, since the Expedia+ card offers automatic Silver status and the ability to earn Gold status through spending, you’ll see more benefits from your hotel stays if you have this card. If you never book hotels through Expedia, this benefit will not be helpful to you at all.

Since the Expedia+ card doesn’t have an annual fee, it could still make sense to get if you only have an occasional Expedia booking, but it would be best to put the majority of your regular everyday spending on a different credit card that will earn more.

First off, the sign-up bonus for the Voyager card is higher at 25,000 points. These points can be redeemed for $350 toward at stay at a +VIP Access hotel, compared to only $200 for the regular Expedia+ card.

The Voyager card also earns four points per dollar spent on most Expedia purchases, two points per dollar for dining and entertainment, and one point per dollar for all other purchases. Instead of getting only Expedia+ Silver status, Voyager cardholders will be given automatic Gold status. The Voyager card also offers a $100 statement credit to cover your TSA PreCheck or Global Entry application to help make traveling even more enjoyable.

Compare Expedia®+ Card to Other Cards

It’s also worth comparing the Expedia+ card to a couple of other credit cards that earn a similar type of rewards, including the Barclaycard Arrival Plus, Discover it Miles and Venture Rewards.

15,000points offer
Expedia® + Card from Citi

Check if Expedia® + Card from Citi is the best option for you

One of the big differences between these cards is the sign-up bonuses. The Barclaycard Arrival Plus offers the largest bonus of 40,000 points, followed by the Venture Rewards card at 50,000 points.

The Discover it Miles card has a slightly more complex sign-up bonus in that Discover matches all of the miles you earn in your first year as a card member. If you earn 20,000 miles in the first year, your sign-up bonus is basically another 20,000 miles. If you earn 200,000 miles, your sign-up bonus is 200,000 miles. There is no limit to the number of miles that Discover will match.

The other main difference between these cards is the annual fee. Like the Expedia+ card, Neither the Discover it Miles nor the Venture Rewards card have an annual fee. The Barclaycard Arrival Plus does have a $89 annual fee.
