Discover it® - Cashback Match™
The Discover it cashback credit card is a great no annual fee card that offers a good return on everyday spending with bonus categories that change every quarter. Additionally, in lieu of a traditional sign-up bonus, Discover will double all of the rewards you earn in your first year. If you earn $100, Discover will match that with an additional $100; if you earn $1,000, Discover will still match it!
The Discover it card doesn’t have many travel perks, so it isn’t a card that will only benefit travelers. It’s good for anyone who wants to earn cash back.
One of the biggest downsides of Discover is that it’s not accepted in as many places as Visa and MasterCard, especially when traveling abroad. This means that the Discover it card probably isn’t going to do it all for you, but it’s a good second or third card to carry in your wallet.
Bonuses and Benefits
Knowing what benefits come with a credit card can help you decide if it’s a good fit for you. Here we cover the bonuses and perks that the Discover it® - Cashback Match™ offers and the value of the Discover Cashback Bonus® cashback you earn.
Discover doesn’t currently offer a traditional sign-up bonus with the Discover it card, but what they do offer might be even better! Right now, Discover will match all of the ash back you earn in your first year of card membership. If you earn $50, they’ll give you $50 more. If you earn $700, you’ll get $700 more. If you spend strategically during your first year as a cardholder, you can easily earn more cash back than a traditional sign-up bonus would offer. We’ll go into more detail about how much cash back you can earn for each purchase, but know that you’ll earn either one percent or five percent back. With the double cash back offer, that really means you’ll get either two percent or 10 percent back for all of your purchases in the first year!
What You Get
- Discover will match the cash back you’ve earned during the first year
- 5% cash back in quarterly rotating bonus categories
Your cashback rewards will never expire as long as your Discover account is kept open. Since there’s no annual fee, there’s really no reason to ever close the account, but if you do, just redeem your cash back ahead of time.
The Discover it cashback card earns five percent back on categories that rotate every quarter and one percent back on all other purchases. While the quarterly categories change each year, some categories that have popped up frequently in the past include dining, entertainment, gas and Amazon.com.
Registration is required in order to earn five percent back, and there are typically dollar limits on how much you can earn at that rate. However, there is no overall limit to the amount of cash back that can be earned. And remember, in your first year Discover will double your cash back! This basically means that quarterly rotating categories earn 10 percent back and all other purchases earn two percent in the first year.

The Discover it cashback card isn’t really a travel card and therefore doesn’t have many travel benefits.
No Foreign Transaction Fees
You won’t be hit with any additional fees for using your Discover card while traveling internationally.
Earn Elite Status Fast
There aren’t any opportunities to quickly earn elite status with airlines or hotels with the Discover it.
Fees: the cost of Having the Card
The Discover it card doesn’t have an annual fee, so you don’t need to spend anything to cover the cost! You should, however, consider if you could be earning more cash back from spending on a different credit card instead.
Since Discover will double your cash back in the first year, you can really do quite well. Considering that the quarterly rotating categories that normally earn five percent back will effectively earn 10 percent back at the end of the first year, it’s really hard to beat what this cashback card offers.
- Annual Fee
- Balance Transfer Fee
- 3% of the amount of each transfer
- Late Payment Fee
None the first time you pay late. After that, up to $37
- Foreign Transaction Fee
Discover it® Cash is a no-fee card. You do not have to earn a certain amount of rewards in order to cover the cost since it’s free. It’s still good to know roughly how much you’ll be earning, though. We’ve broken out our estimates for the first- and second-year net earnings.
These estimates are based on an annual monthly spend of $2,000

When you apply for your Discover it card, Discover will assess your full application in order to determine your credit limit. Credit limits for the Discover it cashback card can be very low or very high. If you would like a higher credit limit, you can request a credit increase with Discover, but it is best to wait at least three months after applying or since your last request for an increase.
The five percent rotating bonus categories change each quarter, and we don’t usually know what they are more than a month or two ahead of time. However, some popular categories that have made multiple appearances in the past include gas stations, grocery stores, restaurants, Amazon.com, home improvement stores and entertainment.
You’ll need a good credit score to get the Discover it card. Most people who are approved report a credit score of at least 710. If you have a lower credit score or are looking to build your credit history, Discover also offers a Discover it® for Students and a secured card.
Yes, Discover it and Discover it Miles are two different cards with different earning and redeeming structures. For instance, the Discover it Miles earns 1.5 miles per dollar spent on all purchases with no bonus categories.
Cash back will post to your account almost instantly.
Yes, Discover also offers a shopping portal that allows you to earn more cash back when shopping online with participating merchants. You can navigate to the portal after logging into your Discover account. Search for the merchant that you want to shop at in order to find out if they are participating, and you’ll also see how much additional cash back you will earn. Cash back earned through the portal is also eligible to be doubled by Discover after your first year of being a card member.
Compare Discover Cards
Discover offers a few other cashback or pseudo-cashback cards that might be worth considering. Most of the cards earn typical cash back, like the Discover it. The Discover it Miles card technically earns miles, but the miles are redeemable for cash back at a consistent rate.
Other Discover It cards
One great thing about all of these cards is that none have an annual fee.
Discover it Chrome will benefit those that spend more on gas and restaurants as it earns two percent back in those categories and one percent on all other purchases. The Discover it Miles card earns 1.5 miles (which is really 1.5 percent cash back) on all purchases, so this card is beneficial if you have many purchases that wouldn’t otherwise fall into a specific category.
Outside of the percentage earned on various purchases, there is not a big difference between any of these cards, so just think about your spending patterns and determine which card will net you the most cash back.
Compare the Discover it Credit Card to Other Cards
There are a handful of other cards that are worth comparing to the Discover it card before you apply, including VentureOne from Capital One, Chase Freedom and Amex EveryDay. Each card has it’s own positives and negatives. None of these cards charge an annual fee.

20,000 miles offerRead Review
- Chase Freedom® Card
$150 bonus offerRead Review
- Amex EveryDay® Credit Card
10,000 points offerRead Review
Like the Discover it, the VentureOne is effectively a cashback card, while both the Chase Freedom and Amex EveryDay cards can offer the ability to transfer to airline and hotel partners. Note that this is only possible with the Freedom card if you also have a premium Chase Ultimate Rewards card.
The VentureOne offers a 20,000 miles sign-up bonus; Freedom offers 15,000 points; and the Amex EveryDay offers 10,000 points. Discover it will match the cash back you earn in your first year, no matter how much it is. If you spend a lot, it might be a better deal.
Both the Freedom and EveryDay cards are good options for someone looking to get a little bit deeper into redeeming miles for flights because they offer more flexibility. On the other hand, the Discover it and VentureOne are simpler cards that are perhaps better suited for someone who just travels occasionally.
As far as rewards earning goes, the Freedom and Discover it both offer quarterly rotating categories, the VentureOne earns 1.25 miles back per dollar, and the Amex EveryDay earns two points per dollar at supermarkets (up to $6,000 spent per year) and one point per dollar for all other purchases. With the Amex card, you can also increase your earnings by 20 percent if you make at least 20 purchases on your card each month.
Whenever you apply for a credit card make sure you read the terms and conditions of the card and the rewards program to find out about minimum spend requirements and any restrictions to ensure you can successfully obtain the card and earn the rewards it offers.
