For excellent/good credit

"Earn valuable Membership Rewards points while paying for your business expenses with this Amex charge card."

The Business Green Rewards card from American Express is designed for business owners seeking a low cost and flexible spending card. This is a charge card, not a credit card, meaning there is no pre-set spending limit. Your purchasing power adjusts with your use of the card, your payment history, credit record and financial resources. If you are a new business owner building your credit history and income flow, this card will allow you to increase your spending ability as your business grows.

The sign-up bonus of 5,000 Membership Rewards points is easy to earn. You simply need to make a purchase on the card; there’s no minimum spending requirement. The $95 annual fee is waived for the first year.

On the downside, the rewards offered by this card are relatively poor. The Business Green card earns only one point per dollar, except for purchases made through Amex travel, which earn two points per dollar. There are almost no travel benefits or other fringe benefits of holding this card.

Bonuses and Benefits

Knowing what benefits come with a credit card can help you decide if it’s a good fit for you. Here we cover the bonuses and perks that the Business Green Rewards Card offers and the value of the AMEX Membership Rewards® points you earn.

Bonuses

The Business Green card comes with a sign-up bonus of 5,000 Membership Rewards points, which are earned after making your first purchase. This is an easy sign-up bonus to earn since it doesn’t come with a spending requirement of several thousand dollars like many travel rewards cards. Membership Rewards points can be transferred to a variety of airline and hotel partners or used to pay for travel directly when booking through Amex.

What You Get

  • Earn 5,000 points after your first purchase
  • 2 points per dollar spent through Amex Travel
  • Annual fee is waived the first year
  • Flexible spending limit that adjusts over time

Membership Rewards points do not expire as long as you have an open Membership Rewards card account. Unlike many airline and hotel programs, account activity is not required to keep the points active, simply keeping the account open is sufficient. Also, if you earn points on the Business Green card and later open a different card that earns Membership Rewards, the points you have earned on this card will remain active even if you close the Business Green card.

What is the value of the Membership Rewards® Points?

Membership Rewards is a very flexible travel currency. American Express offers 17 airline and three hotel partners to whom you may transfer your points. This allows you to customize your redemption strategy to suit your specific travel needs. It also helps maximize the value of your points relative to a less flexible rewards currency.

What is CPM and How Is It Calculated?

Cents Per Mile (CPM) is a way to measure the value of miles. It tells you how many cents you get for each mile you redeem by dividing the cash price of the airline ticket (minus taxes and fees charged for an award ticket) by the number of miles the award flight costs. This is a somewhat subjective calculation because the price of the flight in both cash and miles fluctuates by season and availability.

The Best Ways to Redeem American Express® Points

There are multiple great ways to redeem Membership Rewards, depending on your travel needs. If you desire international premium cabin airline tickets, then transferring points to All Nippon Airways or Singapore Airlines are great options. For domestic economy airline tickets, consider Delta Airlines or British Airways, which allows you to book flights on American Airlines.

This card’s annual fee is $0 first year, then $95 in each subsequent year. Therefore, no spending is required to cover the annual fee for the first year. After that, if you make $5,249 in purchases a year, you’ll cover the cost of the card. That’s because you’ll earn at least 5,249 points, and they’re worth at least 1.81 cents each. If you spend about $2,000 a month, you’ll pay off the card in 3 months.

The sign-up bonus of 5,000 points is worth approximately $91 in travel, which nearly covers the annual fee for the second year.
