RewardExpert Ranks Counties with the Best Public School Systems in the United States

Analyzes government data to determine which counties in each region have the highest quality public education systems.

New York, N.Y. – With the school year kicking off, families across the country are focusing on the education their kids will be receiving in their communities. RewardExpert – a free service that helps users take full advantage of credit card and travel rewards – today released its ranking of The Best Public School Systems in the U.S. by County and Region. Where children live in America is a great determinant on the quality of education they can expect to receive. RewardExpert’s report takes a look at the hard numbers to distill which counties house the top performing schools in each of the six major geographical regions of the United States.

“Public schools are funded by taxes, and tax revenues are strongly correlated with average incomes,” says RewardExpert co-founder Vlad Tyschuk. “Well-funded schools in well-heeled communities usually provide higher quality education. There are no guarantees, however, that this is always the case. In order to provide a comprehensive analysis, we not only considered overall school performance, but also factored in the performance gap between male and female students, plus the performance gaps between the student body as a whole and students with disabilities or from economically disadvantaged families.”

The top counties by region with the best public school systems are:

  • No. 1 in the Northeast is Orleans County, New York
  • No. 1 in the South Atlantic is Forsyth County, Georgia
  • No. 1 in the South Central region is Avoyelles Parish, Louisiana
  • No. 1 in the Midwest is Union County, Iowa
  • No. 1 in the Mountain West is Lincoln County, Nevada
  • No. 1 in the Pacific West is Curry County, Oregon

“Choosing where to live and raise a family is a challenging decision,” says Tyschuk. “Considerations like property taxes, state and local taxes, community amenities, public safety, and proximity to a support network can make an impact on your decision. On top of that, unless you’re able to afford private schooling, your location will determine your children’s education. This ranking can help families determine in which places in the country they can find top performing public schools.”

To determine the ranking, RewardExpert analyzed data provided by the U.S. Department of Education and identified the following data points for analysis: overall graduation rates, the percentage of all students who passed math and reading and language arts proficiency exams, plus these same figures for demographic subgroups, including economically disadvantaged and disabled students.
